This past weekend I found myself in the position of having to explain what a cigarette was for the Poissonnière. She saw someone with a lit cigarette take a drag as they walked past us. I gave her the matter-of-fact explanation of what one was and what people do with them, and then added a footnote that they smell bad and contain a chemical that makes people’s bodies want them even though they make them sick. She thought about it for a couple minutes and announced that she was glad nobody in her family smokes cigarettes. I didn’t have the heart to tell her that her dad smoked them for over a dozen years and will still occasionally crave one over a decade after quitting cold turkey. A conversation for further down the road.
When my daughter was about five, she started walking towards a 75 year old that was smoking. I asked what she was doing and she replied she needed to tell him that smoking is bad for him.
