One of the best tracks on the unfortunately titled Western C*m, another banger of an album from Cory Hanson. I had all sorts of delusions about having a bunch of interesting things to say about music this year in this post but I just couldn't find the time... which I guess is a perfect summation of 2023, which I'm not too sad to see come to an end soon. Hope everyone is doing well!

I checked out this album (yes, unfortunately titled) based on Zack's recommendation and I can confirm it is a banger. Definitely will align with a number of Citizen's musical tastes.
I have given this album a few spins. It has some cool moments and super big riffs. Then a couple tracks later it sounds like Foxygen covering the Eagles. I'm sure I will revisit a few more times. Kept me on my toes.
“Foxygen covering the Eagles.” That’s just cold man.
Am I wrong?!?!
I've not listened to either band enough to make the comparison, but if there's one thing I have an issue with regarding Mr. Hanson, it's the obvious intent to have a bit of an offputting persona. It's hard to judge exactly how sincere he is, and that's kept me from going all the way in with him.
To be clear, I am not dogging on it. I like Foxygen and like the Eagles more than Lewbowski, at least.
The album is pretty good. I like a band that can move it around a little. It's just a little unexpected sometimes. That doesn't mean bad.
Interesting you should say this because I’ve always kind of felt that way about Ty Segall, someone Cory is closely aligned with. The album title is completely off-putting, so much so that I found myself hesitant to recommending it to folks on that fact alone.
Also, I was not prepared for him releasing such a whirlwind of electric guitar on this one based on the mellow vibe of Pale Horse Rider. I ended up picking up a couple of his records with the band Wand as a result of reviews saying this was more in keeping that band’s output. They are a bit spotty, but the highs are definitely terrific. For example, this one from Plum:
