May 26, 2012: What a Difference

...a day makes. We'll be in AZ for another year so there's only one move on the horizon. Oh, and by "on the horizon" I mean "primarily today," as the Milkmaid found a great place for us yesterday but had to act fast.

    1. It's almost frightening how easily everything came together. I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop, 'cause that's the kind of year it's been.

  1. Liriano to start Wednesday. My neighbor said today, and he's pretty optimistic normally, 100 losses are all but assured.

    1. Well, the Twins have no chance of winning anything this year, so they may as well use the rest of the season to find out about people. Is Liriano a part of this team's future or not? I doubt it, but we might as well find out.

      1. Me and the little brother are the ushers. The b-i-l's brothers are the groomsmen, which makes perfect sense to me. Less responsibility doing ushering anyway. I get to sit down.

        1. Ushering is the plum job- you're pretty much expected to sit in the back and you get to tell people where to sit and when they get to leave.

          1. I've been fortunate enough to be the best man three times. There's a lot of responsibility, but for someone who loves to speak publicly, that's been my favorite thing to do.

There's only once that I was sure I was going to be someone's best man, and I actually wasn't. He said it was the hardest decision of his life. That helped.

            1. I was the best man at a wedding that served milk as the toast beverage. My speech wasn't geared for that kind of crowd.

              1. That actually would have been the case for me if I'd been best man for the latter. Bride and groom were both recovering alcoholics.

          2. Ushering is the best, because you get to talk to everyone when they're just arriving and happy, before the rest of the day drags on. Plus, provided the couple is reasonable, you don't have to wear/spend on a tux.

            1. provided the couple bride's mother is reasonable, you don't have to wear/spend on a tux.

              FTFY.

              1. Nice. That was so far from being a problem in my case that I wouldn't even consider it. Heck, if anyone was bad in our case, it was probably me. And basically the only thing I was bad about was insisting that we didn't have paper plates at our reception.

            2. I've ushered several times. I always love to ask the guests, "Our side or their's?"

I remember a wedding in the mid 80's when I had my b-i-l's mini TV and followed a 49ers/Vikes (playoff?) game during the wedding, and all the other ushers kept checking in for scores. You can't do that in the wedding party.

            3. I hear tell of boring weddings and receptions, as if they're the rule, but I've been to maybe two in my life. All the others have been a blast - probably because I know a lot of hard-partying artistic types.

A couple of my friends still say that the reception for me and the Milkmaid is still the best party they've ever been to. It was pretty great, but since all the focus was on my wife and me, it was sort of a blur. I wish I remembered more of it.

This is the same thing my friends say. I vaguely remember some really good times, but the whole day kind of blends together. I have zero memories from inside the church, except leaning over to Linds during one of the songs and asking her if we were technically married if the pastor keeled over during the song.

              2. I have a lot of cousins. A lot of them have been getting married lately. A lot of them don't appreciate how painful a wedding can be when you have 2 small kids and they plan a 3 hour gap between ceremony and reception but tell you that the reception will "follow immediately." Weddings are tough with kids. I've been to a ton of really fun weddings, but I've been to a ton of tough ones too.

                1. Oh man, the three-hour gap. Our wedding was at St. Kates: ceremony over, everyone gather on the lawn for photos (5 mins), then walk over to the reception hall on campus. Receiving line in there concurrent with food and drinks.

We had praise for our reception, too, vs others around the same time, and I think we spent like 10% or less of some of the others. We had been to enough weddingsof family and friends over the prior 18 months that we knew exactly what to avoid/prevent.

                  1. Same with us. We did the receiving line at church, then there was a 30 minute drive from the church to the reception. Dinner started probably an hour after the receiving line ended, which is pretty good, considering the drive. A bunch of people stopped at the bar between church and reception, assuming there'd be more time, and walked in late for dinner. That's how we knew we did it right.

    1. I have a wedding this afternoon, too. I'll be the one in front of the (I hope) happy couple.

    1. I'm trying to think of any Twins pitcher that was banished to the bullpen for ineffectiveness and returned to the rotation later in the same season and was able to keep his spot in the rotation.

    2. I'm thinking this switch is done because Gardy is convinced the Twins would have won yesterday if he would have been able to have Swarzak come in relief for himself.

      1. Kidding aside, from listening to Gardy on the radio pre-game, the Twins seem to have decided that Sasquatch belongs in the bullpen.

        1. After looking at Smearsplat's ERA as a reliever vs. as a starter, I think that's the correct decision.

            1. Hmm- it's one of the ickiest ones I can remember, now that I think of it. I'm not sure I want to sink to the challenge of coming up with a worse one.

  2. The Twins say goodbye to a Marquis name:

    Phil Mackey ‏@PMac21
The #Twins have placed Jason Marquis on release waivers. If he isn't claimed within 48 hours he'll become a free agent.

    1. The reviews appeal to me. I especially like this one:

Presentation: 12oz brown bottle. No freshness date, but it's got a pretty cool looking hawk on the label.

      1. "exceptional" might be stretching it a bit, but I like Mendocino's line overall. My favorites are their Black Eye black & tan blend and their special bock.

Red Tail Ale is a standby, of course, and the Blue Heron is a nice pale ale.

    2. Did you see this link I share in the game log last night? The price is high but it might just be worth it for a treat once in a while.

      1. I did. I'm contractually obligated to refrain from surly purchases as it will cause a huge problem with my free supply of summit products.

        1. I don't know exactly what this means or how to respond appropriately but I understand.

          1. I have a close personal friend who brews for summit, and, as you can imagine, he has a bit of an off taste for surly. I don't mention that I enjoy a bender / cynic from time to time to preserve my hookup.

            1. I think you might have to make a move for this then. It is a shame not to take advantage of technology.

                  1. i use to work across the street from france 44. also, there's got to be somewhere closer to you to procure that.

                    1. I can buy Holy Moses at most any local grocer--and I do.

            2. I have to admit, meat, and no offense to you or your friend, but this comment, as well as the opinions of the owner on certain legislation that was passed not too long ago, reinforces my desire to avoid Summit.

              1. I may not be remembering the right piece of legislation, but I thought that was Leinenkugel who supported it.

                1. Isn't Leinenkugel owned by one of the biggies now? And Leinenkugel wouldn't have a say in Minnesota legistlation, would they?

Why is Surly taking so long on the taproom concept?

                2. I had read an article about the bill allowing brewpubs and the like to sell sixers at the pub in which the owner of Summit was all, and I'm paraphrasing, " this bill is bad, it isn't fair to bigger guys like me and will. It into my market." I'll dig for it some don't sound like some crazy jerk.

                3. Ah, here we go. It's not as bad as I remember it, but its still an odd opinion considering Wisconsin brewpubs are allowed to sell off site and it hasn't been a problem for all the small breweries popping up here.

  3. Just caught the score of the NBA game, though I probably won't get a chance to actually watch the remainder of the game.

Which is it - defensive marvel or horrible shooting day?

      1. And naturally Rondo turns it on out of nowhere. Dude has to be the most frustratingly awesome player ever to root for.

            1. Twins game? I did. It was a push. I live to play another day.

    1. great defense, but both teams set back offensive basketball by several decades. I was expecting some two-handed set shots and running hooks. Just awful shooting.
