After six straight days in a department that I'm still not comfortable with and the harsh news of finding out I'll have a new manager soon because the old one slept with another employee at a company retreat (oops!), I finally have a day off. I could use this one.

  1. My internet connection has been in-and-out since yesterday afternoon. If Minor Details doesn't show up for a while, that will be the reason why.

    1. I've had an intermittent internet connection since buying the new computer a month or so ago.
      But last night I released and renewed an IP address, and now I'm optimistic that will do the job.

  3. Pick up Erik Bedard and give him a 4 or 5 start tryout? He can't be much worse than what we have.

    1. same with prior. i just really want to see at least one game of prior pitching to mauer.

    3. Bedard has had his shot more than once. I'd rather see guys who haven't had a real shot and see what they can do. I'd definitely take Diamond, Hendricks and DeVries over Bedard any day and I'd like to see what Rick Anderson can do with Deduno. If he can improve his control, he may be a decent pitcher. And Duensing's been pretty good since returning to the rotation, his last start excepted.

      2. actually, after watching this a few times, it kind of looks like he flipped it behind his back to his other hand after he caught it. however, it also looks like he brings it around front too (screened by the batter). what do y'all think?

        1. I'm pretty confident that he pulls it from his glove in front of his body. the glove-hand flip is just follow through on the catch. watch his right arm. You can see his right hand come around to the glove from between Smoak's legs.

          1. I'm siding with bS on this one, the transfer was in front. Still, very smooth. Made it look easy.

    Even though Nick Blackburn and Tsuyoshi Nishioka were removed from the 40-man roster last week, Ryan said both could be in spring training next year as minor league invitees.

  11. Thanks to the Sundance 608's Summer Classics series, on Thursday afternoon we're going to see one of my very favorite movies on the big screen - High Noon. There are a few movies which I've always wanted to see the way they were made to be seen. This is one of them.

    Other films left in their series this year: Doctor Zhivago (next week), The African Queen, Chinatown, and Bridge on the River Kwai. Apparently I missed another of my favorites, The Searchers, when I was in Russia. I'm a little bummed about this - we're talking John Ford's masterpice in freakin' VistaVision here - but hey, it was Russia. Well, flying back from Russia, anyway.ο»Ώ

  12. Philosofette has returned to school. After many years out, we decided it was probably the right time for her to get a masters in education and teaching license. She's really probably more of the non-profit executive-type, but that's not the easiest world to break into (especially in Mankato), and she's always figured she'd teach for at least part of her career, so she applied to the Mankato program designed for people returning to school after time away. Then we discovered that Mankato is going to basically require her to reacquire her undergrad degree (English) because they don't want to count any of the classes she took at CSB. Instead of a 2-year part time+ program, it became a full-time 4 year program. So she dropped out of everything, but is taking just one English class this semester, to sort of reintroduce herself to school. A pretty exciting day for us here, as we've both lamented being out of academia for so long.

    1. Is she looking to teach and / or be part of preschool administration? If so, I may have a hookup for you.

          2. I second hj's question, but since you added more qualifications below, it's not so bad. I'm glad someone wants to do it.

    2. I started school again this week too. Technically, classes started last week but there was no work until this week. I'm taking all online courses, but I'm doing my studying on campus as I don't have an ideal space for studying at home. It's weird. It feels good to be back learning, but it also makes me feel more regret for dropping out when I did. I missed out on the "college experience" the first time around. I don't think I'm going to get it this time, but hey, who knows. I mention it just because I'm hoping to end up doing some sort of work for a non-profit. I'm not sure what field exactly, but I have a lot of causes I'm very passionate about. I just don't want to spend the next 35 years working in an office. Ten years is great plenty.

      3. If you haven't read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, now would be a good time for you to do that.

          1. There's a concept that Pirsig lays out in the book that he calls the University of Life. It makes a lot of sense, especially for older non-traditional students.

  13. To make things more interesting here our ac went out last night. I found the compressor totally frozen with no cool air coming from the vents inside the house. Needless to say we didn't get much sleep last night with the anxiety and 86˚ + high humidity in the house. On the bright side, the ac dude just showed up to fix it. I'm totally grateful, but I can't believe he's out there working on our unit. Granted, the storm hasn't started in earnest yet, but the wind is beginning to kick up.

    2. As someone who has ridden fat horses before, I'd just like to point out that sitting astride a grizzly bear with that much girth would be like doing the splits. I suppose they didn't want to depict Abe sitting sidesaddle, though.

      Yes, that is the only issue I have with that print. Why do you ask?

  17. MLB reups with ESPN for about a gazillion dollars. Part of the contract says ESPN can show teams 6 times a year instead of 5. Yep, more Yankees and Red Sox!!!!

    It will be interesting to see if NBC can pry away one of the Turner or FOX packages that are up next year.

    1. I hope it's FOX. I also hope the additional revenue from this TV deal is reflected in our favorite nine's payroll next year.

  18. I was looking something up on Fangraphs and noticed that Jeff Gray has the same fWAR as Nick Blackburn at -0.8. DFA him and call up Slama. I don't think he could possibly be any worse.
