in junior high, if you named a nirvana song i could probably tell you what album it was from, what track number it is, and quote the lyrics by rote (some exceptions from incesticide). nowadays, i have to hear it to every remember what song it is.
This one's from Bleach. I don't think I ever knew the lyrics for this album. The vocal mix is muddy and it's not like it was Kurt's goal to enunciate.
well, yeah. nah, i remembered after i listened to it, but i'm just illustrating how that wasn't normally be the case (and i remember a lot of the later tracks on incesticide being particularly indecipherable).
Mom and dad went to a show
dropped me off with hungry joe
I kicked and screamed said please no
Peckish take me home
Peckish take me home
Edited to take your son out of it.
"it's not like it was Kurt's goal to enunciate." You can say that again. I'm with joe - I knew the majority of the lyrics, but I can't say I ever understood them.
I wonder if his songs could have been more popular if people didn't have to work so hard to understand (or comprehend) them?
I'm wondering how much more popular they could have been.
Deciphering words and their meanings was part of the fun, especially right when "Teen Spirit" dropped.
Clearer pronunciations and meanings would have made Nirvana a different band. The ambiguity and tension
If the title of the "Teen Spirit" b-side (Cassingle, yo!*) hadn't been "Even in His Youth", I would have been without a map, cos it sounds like "EEininiYou" over & over.
*No money for full album. I was 14. Disk Jockey at the River Hills Mall in 'Kato.
