      3. I would've been fine if either were finalists, to be honest. Shin Soo-Choo was worth -17 runs in right and got a nod. Francouer was also a butcher, but both guys are good at throwing runners out.

        Wait a second, isn't this the same thing people Stribbies said made Cuddyer an awesome right fielder? It's all making sense to me now.

              1. I figured you meant that, but with the basketball season starting yesterday and the Lakers losing, I though making a reference to Cabrera's awfulness with additional reference the the "Kobe Apology" was apt.

                1. You need the URL to the image. On the right, is a link to the image you can use. Then use the 'img' button and paste in the image URL.

        1. Last year's awards maybe. The votes were due at the end of the regular season. Trout didn't win one last year either, so I suppose you're right.

    1. At some point, yes. Both extended families are about 1.5 hours from home, so we'll continue to operate from our usual home base. Which days we're traveling, I have no clue, but if you're around for any extended time, we'll overlap.

  7. for those that are fans of the show, 30 Rock will air tonight instead of tomorrow because NBC is reairing The Voice. 30 Rock has been firing on all cylinders this season.
    Also, the excellent show Community will be back on Thursday nights, but will have to wait until February.

    1. Going strictly by the numbers, Sisk looks awfully pedestrian (minor league relievers usually aren't all that and his numbers aren't special.) Santana's velocity was down somewhat this year, but mainly his HR/FB rate was remarkably high. It's a one-year deal, which mitigates the risk for the Royals. It's probably more than he'd get on the free agent market after this season, but he might have more upside than any free agent pitchers who sign a one-year deal. And I think we've seen recently that contract terms being equal, free agents tend to pick teams with winning track records over teams with losing track records.

      Anyway, seems like a pretty fair trade as long as Santana's not injured.

  10. MLS Cup playoffs start tonight with Houston at Chicago. In the interests of hoping for the Sounders to host the MLS Cup Final, I must hope for Houston to advance to the MLS Cup final, since Houston is the only team in the East with fewer points than Seattle. Other than that, I would generally rather see Chicago win.

    Apparently NY and DC will swap the traditional home/away ordering in their two-leg series due to the impact of the hurricane on NYRB's home park. I find these two-leg series kind of fascinating since they make more sense if you think of them as a 180-minute game rather than two 90-minute games. I don't think that hosting the second leg is really that advantageous. Yes, you get the advantage if you go to extra time, but getting the first-half lead can be a bigger factor, which is easier to do if you host the first leg. I would have thought that swapping home/away would have led to some kind of modification--DC wins if it is tied after 180 minutes, or maybe it goes straight to penalties if it is tied after 180 minutes, but it's probably not a huge deal one way or another.

  11. I am disappointed that there was no NBA discussion to speak of today.

    I was switching back-and-forth between the Mavs dissection of the new-look Lakers and X-Men Origins: Wolverine last night. The teamwork was better between Wolverine and Sabretooth than between the Lakers. Although I liked Pau's attempt to coach Dwight Howard on FT shooting.

    Also, is there a more ridiculous show on television than TNT's postgame show? It was an amusing, largely unscripted, hour-long yuckfest. Although I also enjoyed the more-scripted bit, "Who He Play For?" featuring Sir Charles trying to guess where various journeymen have landed this season.

    1. I have been away from a computer all day. As I mentioned last night, Gasol looked great, the rest of the Lakers, not so much.

      As for tonight, I am using my League Pass to watch Rockets/Pistons. I am as surprised as everyone else.

    Mathgen, the web site that can produce randomly generated mathematics papers has apparently gotten a paper accepted in a peer-reviewed journal (although perhaps not the most reputable one). I am not at all surprised this happened, but it’s fun to read both the paper and the reviewer’s comments.
