  1. Pettitte apparently to get $11 million for next year. Pettitte delivered $9.5 million of value in 2010 and $7.5 million of value (in 12 starts) in 2012. He turns 41 on June 15, 2013.

Now, if Pettitte can replicate his 2012 performance over 25 starts, the Yankees do all right. Can a 41 year old who has pitched 3130 innings in the bigs do this? Or rather, how can a 41 year old who has pitched 3130 innings do this?

I think this is a good signing and the Yanks will probably make out on this. The other thing is this: if you can play major league baseball, you should play until they tear your jersey off. Unless, of course, you have another job where you can make $11 million that you have to absolutely take right now.

    1. you should play until they tear your jersey arm off.

Rickey says "damn right". But Rickey fixed that for you.

"I love the game of baseball, that's why it was so hard for me to walk away from the game. I thought if Satchel Paige can start playing major league baseball at the age of 45, then with my dedication, hard work and desire, I can play the game until my body said it was time to hang it up."

      1. "Kevin, this is Rickey, calling on behalf of Rickey. Rickey wants to play baseball." — Rickey, calling San Diego GM Kevin Towers about a job

    2. With the Yankees' payroll, it would be difficult to imagine any one-year contract being bad for them. But, yeah, I wouldn't have complained much if the Twins had signed him for this amount.

  2. I'm in the market for an indoor bicycle trainer. Does anyone here have experience with these / advice on what features to look for. I've seen prices on these up to 500 bucks, but am looking significantly further down the expense list.

    1. I have used the Schwinn Airdyne in the past. I like it because it employs both the arms and legs and it doesn't have a resistance device. The harder you pedal, the harder it is. A good used one should be << $500. One thing I will say is that in my recent use, my knees have hurt a little, but that might be because of the seat height that I selected (i.e. I was sitting too high). I will test it out again when I am in ND this week.

        1. My wife and I use this one that I got for her triathalon training about 3 years ago. Actually, it doesn't see that much use since we got our gym membership. Also, I don't like that it's a manual adjust only (not on-the-fly...you have to get off the bike to increase/decrease tension). However, it is smooth and with a decent television program, I don't mind 20-30 minutes on it.

    2. I think mine cost around $250. Features that I like: it folds and doesn't take up a lot of space when not in use. Also I would think you would something substantial, and doesn't crumple after so much use. What I don't like is that the wheel is noisy. Not sure if that is curable but maybe something to look into. Sorry can't remember the brand name off the top of my head.

  3. I have no facts to back this up, but a gut feeling: you know whats stopping 'a la carte' cable delivery system? sports networks.

ESPN charges over 5 bucks per customer, even if they dont watch the channel. the BTN recently expanded to the east and hope the is enough support to move the channel to a more premium tier. NBC Sports Network has been expanding programming (EPL, Formula 1, simulcasting The Dan Patrick Show), and CBS launched their own sports channel. Sounds like FOX is going to rebrand SPEED channel to a FOX sports net, with the potential to reband more of their properties. (one interesting thing about the proposed channel is that all sports would have side-by-side commercials like you see in auto racing)

ESPN would lose a good chunk of money if all of a sudden people got the choice to not carry the channel. ESPN is basically keeping Disney afloat right now. Other channels would go by the wayside (would people choose to pay for outer rim channels like Spike or G4? How many liberals would drop FOX News, conservatives MSNBC, or both sides of the aisle CNN?) so there must be intense pressure by them to the cable companies to keep things status quo.

    1. ESPN's ability to raise rates as they add more content (and RSNs following suit) has fueled so much of the revenue increases for sports. The leagues do not want a la carte pricing either.

    2. I never watch about 4/5ths of the channels I currently get (at least). Would I pay the same amount a la carte that I currently pay for just the channels I watch consistently? No, but I'd come close.

but would I drop Fox News, even though I am a liberal? Only if I could pick it up again easily. I rather enjoyed their election-night coverage. I suspect that many conservatives would say the same of MSNBC's coverage in the last midterm elections.

      1. Would I pay the same amount a la carte that I currently pay for just the channels I watch consistently?
you know what would be great? if the cable bill came with a breakdown of what you are paying for the channels you get. but, it probably falls under 'people cant handle the truth' or 'industry secrets' or some other bs.

        1. no doubt.

also, how much of local cable bills are due to the franchise fees charged by local communities? The 1984 Cable Act capped franchise fees at five percent of an operator's gross revenues.

Obviously, local governments charging franchise fees have/had incentives to keep cable operators' revenues as high as possible.

  4. Joe Mauer is that player. Five-time all-star, three-time batting champion, former MVP. He will be 30 years old in April, still in the prime of his career, and almost certainly receptive to making a position change from catcher to first base, to save on the physical pounding he has absorbed in nine seasons in the big leagues.

I guess Gordon Edes of 4ltrBoston had talked to Mauer about being a permanent firstbase dude.

    1. I doubt he read this story last month from the Twins website:

Mauer, 29, saw his time behind the plate drop, however, as he started 74 games at catcher while starting 42 games at designated hitter and 30 at first base. But Mauer said he wants to catch more next year, as his time at first base had a lot to do with Morneau starting the year off as DH.

    2. Here's my favorite quote:

Depending on how much of the contract they're willing to pick up, the Sox should be able to hang on to their very best prospects in a deal for Mauer.

Oh, yes, absolutely. I'm sure the Twins will take peanuts in a trade for their former MVP hometown player who is a three-time batting champ to cut payroll. Oh, and he plays catcher. He'd be going from one bad situation to another. The Red Sox are probably farther away from contending than the Twins because of the division they're in, so I'm sure he'd waive his NTC to go into that maelstrom.

I love these idiotic trade proposals, so I'll throw one out there. Twins send Nick Blackburn and his full salary to the Red Sox in exchange for Jon Lester. Both guys just need a change of scenery, and Boston could use that freed up salary space to go sign another player in FA!

      1. oof, I skipped over that sentence.
I guess we can get their best player for Drew Butera, Alex Burnett, and a spare TC the Bear costume.

    1. When I opened a new tab and I saw the Strib green star and the letters "Sou" and thought it was going to be a Souhan article.

      1. Souhan's latest column is a Goldy's diary page saying that Fireman Ed sucks.

        its gold Jerry, gold.

              1. I feel like this is at least the third time this clip has been on here. It's among my favorite 18 seconds ever from The Simpsons.

            1. No, you'd probably get Turkeys with Torii, The Seven People Who Fail to Credit Your Tweets, and a lot of feces thrown around.
