2013 Game 72: Twins at Indians

Oh, good, Pedro Hernandez is back and he's on the hill today! Amazingly, he's by far the more successful this year of today's two pitchers, as Carlos Carrasco (0-2, 8.40) should help to make this a high-scoring affair.

It seems like there's very little to say about a team hovering just under .500. It's not bad enough for mockery and they're not good enough that it's reasonable to talk about the playoffs. So, we wait for the young kids to turn this thing around, and wonder what kind of pitching the Twins will get in return for guys like Willingham and Morneau. I've never been the rosterbating type, so I'll leave that to everyone else.

Mauer's currently holding off a run from Wieters for the All-Star Game starting spot. This is in no way a reasonable thing, so I'm considering voting for the first time in several years. But, I'll probably blow it off in the end.

  3. Damn. Willingham's single is the only thing that hasn't been hit hard so far. That was a pretty loud out.

  17. I get to see maybe one full game a week, and the game won't load. Freaking MLB.tv. It's not enough that it has occasional problems; the problems actually know when they're least convenient for me. Sigh.

        1. In fairness, it could have popped up during almost any time the Indigenous Persons were batting and it would have sucked.

      1. He also sees a path for the Indians to win the division and he expects to see them in the playoffs, so his baseball analysis is no better than his acting.

        (He has yet to describe the path, but he's mentioned it more than once)

          1. I think just one might be able to do it, but they won't challenge the Tigers and they sure as hell won't challenge for the Wild Card spots.

  26. Still, Costner's analysis is outshining that of the regular announcers. An announcer quoted the old "fail 70% of the time, and you're in the Hall of Fame" line, and Costner subtly referenced the importance of OBP.

  28. Costner's explanation of why he's an actor is immediately infuriating to probably any actor who heard it. I'm not surprised to learn that he'd never acted before college and had no particular training. Lucky bastard to have those looks and wavy hair.

      1. I heard he went to see Contact, but was disappointed to learn it had nothing to do with pitching.

  36. Cleveland announcers and GM have referred back to Costner's two Oscars several times. It's clear that they don't know that they were for directing and producing, and not acting.

    1. Maybe Bert will ask about Waterworld. Gladden is upset that he forgot to bring it up.

  48. I've missed the past few games, so maybe there has been an explanation, but why is The Trader hitting leadoff instead of Dozier, who seemed to have been playing better of late? Is Gardy a little drunk, or something?

    2. I guess Dozier leads off against lefties, Clete against RHP? Something like that, anyhow. I'd rather put Dozier in there and leave him there, personally.

      2. Dozier with a career OBP vs. righties of .274, Clete at .323. I'm just excited that Gardy is actually considering platoon advantages in lineup construction.

        1. I do like that there's some platooning going on, but after Clete's epic K-streak last year, I just can't find it in me to expect him to do anything good with a bat. I'd rather Dozier got on base and got thrown out trying to steal, I guess.

  52. "the IDEAL" would be for Duensing to get the 7th? No, the ideal would not involve Brian Duensing.

      1. Duensing with an FIP of 2.63 this year. He's had a BABIP of .345, but hasn't allowed a homer, so a little unlucky in some respects and a little lucky in others.

      2. yeah, looked out, but the pitcher shuffled his feet about 3 times then touched the base a hair before Doumit. Tough call for the ump

    2. 4th time this year Mauer has touched home 3 times in a game. Only did it twice last year.

    1. I dunno, but he was once traded (with Scott Podsednik)from Boston to Arizona for Craig Breslow

  69. That was the end of Fien's scoreless innings streak to start his career, right? At least it was a no-doubter.

  71. Gladden summarizing what he calls "Billy ball" in reference to Swisher: "They signed him because he walked a lot, figured they would teach him to hit later. He turned into a pretty good ballplayer."
