  1. The two high schools in my parish, Potter County and Sully Buttes, played each other for the regional girls basketball championship last night. Sully Buttes won, and will go on to the state tournament next week. The two schools may meet again next week in the boys regions, as both Potter County and Sully Buttes play for their respective district basketball championships tonight.

  2. Back from Omaha, so let's pick it up where we left off. Bonus points for this one.

        1. I thought that was too easy but I went with it anyway. I can see the real answer but man it screams my answer.

I'm waiting for the sig that RR trolls us with.

  3. Who said it?

"I feel good, man. I had lost that athleticism and that's why I wasn't having fun anymore. I'm now running around, doing jump throws."

Hint: He recently lost a lot of games due to injury.

    1. This just bumped the Eiffel Tower off the list of greatest things I've ever seen.

        1. All I can say is that it's from Facebook. And that Budweiser is behind the Make Opening Day of Baseball Season a National Holiday thing.

  4. Players find tobacco habit hard to shake

“I’d quit if my family wanted me to,” Gomes said. “The kids aren’t old enough to realize what’s going on. People are baffled I don’t do it in the offseason because I do it all the time when we’re playing. But I don’t have an addictive personality. There’s just something about it that goes with baseball. There’s something attached to hitting. I can’t describe it.

Im not addicted, but have to have it.

      1. I should have put my comment in quotes, I was commenting more on what Gomes was saying.
I dont use tobacco, never have never will.

        1. I do think one can use drugs and not be addicted to them. If he can that easily quit cold turkey for six months, then he probably doesn't have an addictive personality. I have known people who only smoke cigarettes like 20 days a year when they're at the casino. It's still stupid, but that doesn't mean he couldn't quit easier than some others if he wanted to.

          1. I quit smoking nine years ago after a two-pack-a-day (hand roll) habit for five years, and after about a decade of tobacco use. Thankfully it was relatively easy for me to quit, though I still miss the flavor and smell of pipe tobacco and the rush of nasal snuff (mentholated, please).

But I think that, as a whole, the way we marginalize smokers in society and have legislated them out of public spaces (out of sight, out of the nonsmokers' minds) says volumes about how seriously we actually take nicotine as drug with serious addictive qualities.

I also think that if you're a nonsmoker into your thirties then suddenly start a smoking habit to go with your new lifestyle, that essentially demonstrates you're an idiot.

            1. Burn to Gleeman.

I smoked about 1-2 packs a week back in college, and about a pack a week in secret the first 8 months of marriage (bad idea).
I wasn't addicted, I had no problem not smoking for weekends at home or my in-laws. I just really enjoyed it. It forced me outside during some Seasonal Depressions, and it helped making friends.

Parliaments, usually. I thought they tasted the best. Camels were rough.

I still might try smoking a pipe, especially if we ever get a cabin up north somewhere. I'll shave my chin and get those glasses with the heavy top bar ("Malcolm X Glasses") and have someone take instagram photos and it'll look like I'm one of my own grandpas.

              1. about a pack a week in secret the first 8 months of marriage

how is this even possible? Did you shower and, like, eat an entire pizza, after every butt?

                1. She had a job. I was a grad student and then unemployed.
I showered in the afternoons, before she came home.

          2. I've smoked, chewed and dipped tobacco off and on for close to 20 years in the duck blind, deer stand, ball diamond, military and bar environment (back when you could). Likely due in no small part to the infrequency of my usage, I've always managed to avoid it becoming a habit...came close on a couple of deployments though.

But also, the fact that my mother - in her role as public health educator - was a driving force behind getting smoking banned in public spaces in my home county (back before the state had done so), that I've never been a full-time tobacco user is not really a surprise.

            1. One of my better friends on the faculty at Illinois was a former paratrooper. He learned to smoke in the service because if you weren't smoking during the smoke breaks, you got assigned to policing the area (i.e., picking up trash). Nothing like incentives....

              1. The truth hurts. My first duty was a destroyer and I was in the engineering department, i.e., below the waterline. The only way you could get topside during watch was if you were a smoker.

        2. I was commenting to Gomez, too. I haven't used, either, but if you have to keep your mouth busy during a game, there are much better resources than spittin' tobacco.

        3. “Giving up smoking is the easiest thing in the world. I know because I've done it thousands of times.”
          Mark Twain

    1. I smoked a pack a day for nine years, from 1993-2002. It took me at least three to go from "I really want this" to "I legitimately need this." I remember the horrible realization when I said "I can quit anytime I want" but it hit me that it was no longer true.

I quit cold turkey when the Milkmaid told me one of the only lies she's ever told (she doesn't bother because she's such an awful liar). We'd been together a bit over a month, and she told me she was allergic. I didn't believe her, but I'd been looking for an excuse to quit for so long that I ran with it.

      1. The woman who became my wife gave me the ultimatum the week after we met: date me, or keep smoking. I'm allowed an occasional cigar (her grandfather is Cuban, so if I'm offered one socially I have a dispensation), but truth be told, I don't much care for cigars. Pipe tobacco was my thing.

  5. I'm in a Scoresheet NL root league with my mentor, his brother, and their father. I know it's going to be an awesome year because I just got an email from the 92-year-old pater familias talking some smack about my roster.

        1. Does that include Brett Favre lacing them up one last time and showing the kids a thing or two?
          Or Jeff George?
