July 19, 2014: In My Hands

I received my copy of my game in the mail yesterday. It was a bit overwhelming, though tempered by the sight of a mistake on the rule sheet that I have to correct before it goes out to everyone else.

  1. Is Love a Cav yet so I can start preparing myself for next year's disappointing Wolves season?

    1. It would be such a typical Wolves thing if they would piddle around too long, blow the deal, and wind up trading Love for much less than what we're told is currently being offered.

        fixed

        1. I'm still way more in favor of keeping him, but since they sound determined to make a trade I fear any delays in a trade for Wiggins will end up with Flip thinking he's the hard-balling genius who got his man Klay Thompson.

          1. Im in favor of keeping him too.
If I were management and was dead set on trading Kevin Love, I wouldnt be trying to trade him to any team with LeBron on it. Why help him win championships?

            1. That's sort of what we do up here, I'd say. Based on the current route around the country, maybe next decade that championship well end up in Minnesota (but most likely Milwaukee or Chicago).

  2. In case you missed it, Tracy McGrady announced his retirement from baseball. He made four starts for the SugarLand Skeeters, pitching 6.2 innings. He gave up five runs on four hits (one home run) and ten walks with no strikeouts. He was 0-2, 6.75 with a 2.10 WHIP.

      1. The stats come from b-r.com. I just checked the Atlantic League website and they give the same numbers.

By the way, as a batter he was 0-for-4 (no DH in the Atlantic League?). He did field his only chance, giving him a lifetime fielding percentage of 1.000.

  3. The Twins current 44 wins would have them as the 10th best win total in the NL.

  4. Picked the first bell pepper from the second plant on the deck, but the dog is showing extra interest in the plants now due to the resemblance to tennis balls hanging on them.

    1. Nice. I just picked my first one a couple days ago and put it on a pizza, which was terrific.

        1. Our peppers (three varieties) aren't ready yet. We're probably near the end of the peas, but the cucumbers & gherkins just started arriving. And we've got kale out the wazoo, which means smoothies for breakfast every day.

          1. The one thing I hate about apartment living is the lack of a yard & garden. And we don't even have a balcony for boxes or anything.

          2. We've got kale out the wazoo also. NBBW finds a way to incorporate it into every meal. Had fresh tomatoes with fresh basil on some mozzarella w/ balsamico/olive oil. Very nice. Am ready for the eggplant.

              1. The Green Boot
                (Banana-Peach-Kale Smoovie)
                1 ripe banana
                1 cup frozen peach slices
1 generous handful of baby kale
                4 oz 100% apple juice

Combine ingredients into a blender and zap. MmmmMmmm.

(Could add a little Greek yogurt if so desired, but I prefer it without.)

                  1. Fresh peaches would be fantastic. (In which case I'd add a few ice cubes to the mix. I like my smoothie chilled.) The kale gives it a nutty, earthy flavor.

Fresh always prevails, but it doesn't always keep as long as I'd like and things will turn bad in a heartbeat. The reason I use frozen fruit from time to time is the convenience; no need for ice, and a lot of it is really decent quality. Aldi's raspberries, blueberries, and peaches are all a bargain at just over two bucks a bag.

                    1. I agree, and we try to supplement by freezing what fresh stuff we can't use before it turns, a challenge with a big garden. (Even turned bananas can be frozen to make great banana bread later.) But the quality of frozen food appears to have improved from the awful vegetable medleys I remember from when I was a kid.

And yes to the ice. Mrs. Hayes pours hers over ice, which I just don't understand. That's why we bought the Vitamix.

  5. So, last night I coughed continuously and violently for a half hour stretch, starting at 1:20. Then...I fell asleep! And didn't wake up (completely) until 6:30. Sleep really is a miraculous thing.

Make sure your TDaP is up to date. My last one was more than six years ago. Not. Recent. Enough.

    1. What I'm reading is that pertussis is more from the young? You think you have this?

        1. Aye. Requires a lab test to confirm, which they screwed up. But doc was pretty sure. Is at near-epidemic prevalence locally.

Pertussis can kill babies and toddlers. And probably oldsters. The rest of us are made just really, really miserable.

          1. Treatment, btw, is just your standard Z-pack course of antibiotics. But the cough is not so easily quelled. I have barely slept all week and have been spitting up bloody post-nasal nastiness all day. And this is day 3 of the antibiotics.

  6. Down in Norwalk, CT for NBBW triathlon tomorrow.

After she picked up her race registration stuff, we went exploring over to New Canaan to see the Modern houses.

They don't publish the addresses (as many of them are still private homes), but we found five of them by just driving around taking random turns on country roads.

Design heavily influenced by Bauhaus giants Gropius, Mies, Breuer, Le Corbusier. Johnson Glass House is the poster child of Modern Haus.

The conundrum is that locals want to protect/preserve the houses by having them 'kept up', but don't want you poking around/driving into the properties as they are private. So how to get money/interest if no-one can see the places. Go figure/natch.

    1. Was Jeter in that piece? If not, then no. (Sorry, Bootsy, we're mostly done now).
