Venezuelan View: Games of October 11

La Guaira plays Earl Weaver ball.  Caracas barely hangs on.  Aragua wins it early.

LA GUAIRA 8, MARGARITA 3 IN LA GUAIRA

Twins:  Alexis Tapia pitched two-thirds of an inning for Margarita, giving up only a walk with two strikeouts.

Margarita:  Eliezer Alfonzo was 1-for-4 with a home run.  Mario Yepez (Seattle) was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.  James Houser (Colorado) pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit with one strikeout.

La Guaira:  Cesar Suarez was 3-for-5 with a home run, scoring twice and driving in four.  Alex Cabrera was 1-for-5 with a three-run homer.  Rafael Cova struck out two in 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing one hit.

The game:  Cabrera hit a three-run homer in the fifth to give La Guaira a 5-1 lead and Suarez hit a three-run homer in the sixth to make it 8-1.

CARACAS 7, ANZOATEGUI 6 IN ANZOATEGUI

Caracas:  Carlos Perez (Houston) was 3-for-4 with a home run and a double, scoring twice.  Henry Alejandro Rodriguez (Cincinnati) was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, driving in three.  Jarrett Grube (Angels) pitched three innings, giving up one run on three hits and two walks.

Anzoategui:  Jose Castillo was 3-for-5 with a run.  Jackson Melian (Houston) was 2-for-3 with a triple and a walk, scoring once.  Ricardo Hernandez (Miami) pitched 1.2 perfect innings.

The game:  Caracas scored three in the first and three in the sixth to go up 6-0.  It was 7-2 going to the eighth, when Anzoategui scored four times to close to 7-6.  They had men on first and third with two out and had a man on second with one out in the ninth, but could not tie it up.

ZULIA 3, MAGALLANES 1 IN ZULIA

Magallanes:  Frank Diaz was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  Bobby Blevins (Dodgers) pitched four innings, giving up one run on four hits and no walks with one strikeout.

Zulia:  Giovanny Urshela (Cleveland) was 2-for-4 with a home run.  Carlos Moncrief (Cleveland) was 3-for-3 with a double and a run.  Jeremy Kehrt (Dodgers) pitched four shutout innings, allowing a hit and a walk with two strikeouts.

The game:  Francisco Arcia's (Yankees) RBI single in the seventh broke a 1-1 tie.  A sacrifice fly later in the inning made it 3-1.

ARAGUA 8, LARA 1 IN LARA

Aragua:  Renato Nunez (Oakland) was 2-for-5 with a grand slam.  Hector Gimenez (Milwaukee) was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs.  Chris Smith (San Diego) pitched six shutout innings, giving up three hits and a walk with four strikeouts.

Lara:  Carlos Rivero (Boston) was 1-for-4 with a home run.  Anderson De La Rosa (Angels) was 1-for-3 with a double.  Alex Serrano struck out three in 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk.

The game:  Gimenez hit a two-run homer and Nunez a grand slam in the first inning, giving Aragua a 6-0 lead.
