Down Under Diary: Games of November 13

A Brisbane comeback falls short.  Brilliant pitching by Craig Anderson and Brian Baker leads Sydney and Perth, respectively.

MELBOURNE 7, BRISBANE 6 IN BRISBANE

Twins:  Logan Wade was 0-for-4 for Brisbane.

Melbourne:  Kellan Deglan was 3-for-5 with two home runs and a double, driving in four.  Chace Numata (Philadelphia) was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Kuzuki Miyata struck out four in three shutout innings, giving up two hits.

Brisbane:  Thomas Coyle (Tampa Bay) was 3-for-5 with a triple, scoring once and driving in two.  C. J. Beatty (White Sox) was 2-for-4 with a home run (his third) and two RBIs.  Jason Jarvis (San Francisco) pitched 3.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits with two strikeouts.

The game:  A four-run fifth, featuring a three-run homer by Deglan and a solo shot by Josh Davies, (San Diego) broke a 2-2 and put Melbourne up 6-2.  They still led 7-4 after eight, but Coyle's two-out two-run triple in the ninth closed the gap to 7-6 before the third out was recorded.

SYDNEY 2, CANBERRA 0 IN SYDNEY

Canberra:  L. B. Dantzler (Toronto) was 1-for-3 with a walk.  Brian Grening (Cleveland) pitched seven innings, giving up one run on seven hits and no walks with six strikeouts.

Sydney:  Trent Oeltjen (Arizona) was 2-for-4 with two doubles.  Tyler Bortnick (Arizona) was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Craig Anderson (Baltimore) pitched a complete game shutout, giving up four hits and two walks with six strikeouts.

The game:  Bortnick singled in a run with two out in the fifth, the only run Sydney would need.  All of Canberra's hits were singles and none came after the sixth inning.

PERTH 6, ADELAIDE 0 IN ADELAIDE

Perth:  Brian Pointer (Philadelphia) was 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs.  Tim Smith (Atlanta) was 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs.  Brian Baker pitched seven shutout innings, giving up one hit and one walk with four strikeouts.

Adelaide:  Mitch Dening (Boston) was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.  Matthew Williams struck out five in five innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and one walk.

The game:  In the sixth, a two-run homer by Taishi Nakagawa and a solo homer by Pointer made the score 5-0.  Adelaide had only one hit, a one-out double by Dening in the fourth.
