DK, you are KILLING ME.
First ever (or is it still the only) Billboard Number One from an unsigned artist.
I think that Macklemore counts, too.
Macklemore was signed to an indie label.
Loeb had just recorded the one song for the soundtrack and was completely unsigned. She was Ethan Hawke's neighbor, so that's how she got her song onto the soundtrack without any label support.
I'd say she definitely unique in that regard, then.
Sui generis, even!
A couple weeks ago my wife and I just started singing this randomly while cooking and got through the whole song.
I'm still perplexed with her ALBUM being included in the Current's Top 893 albums of all time. That means multiple people listed it as a top 10 album.
Was it that album (Tails) or the next one (Firecracker)? I seem to remember the second album getting better reviews.
I'm listening to one of her other singles from Tails, "Do You Sleep?" and... it kindof sounds like Semisonic, so someone who put Feeling Strangely Fine in their top tens might feel the same about a Lisa Loeb album.

It was Tails at #871.
Still confused by it.
