  1. I liked the bit about the moose.

I really just don't know any Woody Allen stuff. I think the only movie of his I've seen is Vicky Cristina Barcelona. I keep meaning to rectify that, but then I don't.

      1. Zelig really is a one-of-a-kind, strange trip. I'm not sure I'd recommend it as anybody's first Woody Allen film, given the intimidating stylistic attack, but I dug it a lot.

        1. Annie Hall is the best first Woody Allen movie. I have watched about 80% of his flicks now and always reccomend Annie for beginners.

          1. Yeah, that's a nice starter. Manhattan Murder Mystery is also a nice, light introduction to his stuff, though it doesn't have quite the same neurotic feel that people equate with his work.

    1. Didn't see it coming, but I still didn't laugh. Something about his jokes here just seem obvious, though I can tell he's got style. Perhaps the era and the medium for this routine were the problem. Jewish jokes just don't do anything for me.

      1. I wouldn't even count that as a Jewish joke, just a joke about

        Spoiler SelectShow

[In case it wasn't your intent, I read the term "X joke" where "X" is an subgroup of people (typically ethnic or racial or religious), as a joke where stereotypes about group X are the basis for the humor.]

  2. I pretty much dug it all.
I think the first of his films I saw was Sleeper.
Due to a cable-company error, we had Cinemax without paying for it for at least two years while I was in junior high, and during the summers it'd be on during the mornings.

Was the next one I saw Manhattan? I wouldn't have seen that until I got to college.

Despite not seeing much, I think I understood his humor from things like Tiny Toon Adventures and Animaniacs. Once I saw a little bit of Allen's work, I realized to what the rest Allen-ish jokes in those cartoons referred. But, I knew him first as a caricature. Those cartoons were pretty good at giving me exposure to a lot of 70's and 80's culture that I wouldn't have been aware of otherwise. Is there any children's programming like that currently?

Back to Allen: I haven't seen more than ten of his movies, so I don't really seek him out, but when he's on cable, I'll sit down and enjoy it. So, of those less than ten, I've probably only seen the opening of three or four.

    1. Thinking about it a bit more, my favorite parts of Woody Allen movies are generally his monologues. So I would probably prefer him as a standup.

I would say a lot of children's programming is like this. The writers are our age, and grew up with stuff they knew will make the parents chuckle. I think we sometimes don't think about it, though, since it's made for us and doesn't seem out of place, while our kids are going "What the heck is this?"

  3. i'll admit to a little bit of blasphemy: i've never seen any allen stand up, nor any of his movies. with that, i'll say i definitely enjoyed this. the jokes and his "presence" especially. i've been going through old episodes of wtf with marc maron recently, and bob saget was talking up annie hall as the movie that discouraged him from continuing in filmmaking as it was much better than anything than he could ever do. maybe it's time i check that one out...
