Mazatlan Recaps: Games Thirty-nine and Forty

MONTERREY 11, MAZATLAN 0 IN MONTERREY

Wednesday

Monterrey scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back.  Ricardo Valenzuela was 2-for-2 to lead Mazatlan.  Irvin Delgado started for Mazatlan but lasted just two innings, giving up five runs on five hits and two walks and striking out none.

Record:  Mazatlan is 18-21, in eighth place, eight games behind Obregon.  They are one game behind seventh-place Monterrey.

MAZATLAN 7, MONTERREY 3 IN MONTERREY (11 INNINGS)

Thursday

Mazatlan trailed 3-0 after two, but scored single runs in the fourth, sixth, and seventh to tie it.  Maxwell Leon hit a three-run homer in the four-run eleventh.  Leon was 2-for-5 and the home run was his third.  Isaac Paredes (his third) and Carlos Munoz (his fifth) also homered.  Edgar Torres started and pitched 5.2 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and two walks and striking out two.  Six relievers combined to give up no hits and one walk over the final 5.1 innings.

Record:  Mazatlan is 19-21, in seventh place, seven games behind Obregon.  They are two games behind sixth-place Culiacan.

Next game:  Mazatlan is again at Monterrey today.

MONTERREY 2, MAZATLAN 1 IN MONTERREY

Jose Aguilar's RBI single with one out in the ninth won the game for Monterrey.  Jose Augusto Figueroa led Mazatlan's offense with a 2-for-4 day.  Carlos Morales started and pitched five innings, giving up one run on two hits and four walks and striking out four.

Record:  Mazatlan is 18-20, in seventh place, seven games behind Obregon.  They are two games behind sixth-place Culiacan.

Next game:  Mazatlan is again at Monterrey tonight.

MAZATLAN 1, JALISCO 0 IN MAZATLAN

Saturday

The lone run came in the second inning on a Carlos Munoz homer, his fourth.  Francisco Rios struck out five in five shutout innings, giving up five hits and four walks.  Four relievers each pitched a scoreless inning.  Jalisco stranded eight and was 0-for-12 with men in scoring position.  Mazatlan stranded two and did not have an at-bat with a man in scoring position.

Sunday

MAZATLAN 7, JALISCO 2 IN MAZATLAN

Mazatlan trailed 2-1 after six, but scored four in the seventh and two in the eighth.  Jose Augusto Figueroa, who has all the vowels in his last name, hit a two-run double in the seventh to put Mazatlan in the lead to stay.  Figueroa was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a triple, scoring three times.  Matt Gage pitched 5.1 innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on two hits and five walks and striking out five.

Record:  Mazatlan is 18-19, in seventh place, six games behind Obregon.  They are two games out of sixth.

Next game:  Mazatlan is off today.  They go to Monterrey on Tuesday.

Mazatlan Recaps: Game Thirty-five

JALISCO 3, MAZATLAN 2 AT MAZATLAN

Batting stars:  Anthony Giansanti was 2-for-4 with a home run, his second.  Jose Augusto Figueroa was 2-for-4.

Pitching stars:  Edgar Torres pitched seven innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits and one walk and striking out two.  Juan Ramon Noriega pitched a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Luis Ivan Rodriguez pitched six innings, giving up one run on four hits and two walks and striking out three.  Carlos Figueroa was 2-for-4 with two doubles.

The game:  Each team scored once in the fourth.  For Jalisco Daniel Alvarez doubled and scored on a Henry Urrutia single.  For Mazatlan Figueroa singled, was bunted to second, and scored on an Isaac Paredes single.

Jalisco took the lead in the seventh on an Agustin Murillo single and two errors.  Figueroa doubled in the eighth and scored on Amadeo Zuzueta's single to make it 3-1 Jalisco.

Giansanti homered in the ninth to make it 3-2, but Mazatlan did not get the tying run on base.

WP:  Rodriguez (6-0).  LP:  Torres (2-4).  S:  Brennan Bernardino (6).

Notes:  Paredes was 1-for-4 and is batting .358.  Italo Mota was 0-for-2 and is batting .320.  Carlos Munoz was 0-for-2 and is batting .311.  Figueroa is batting .308.  Giansanti raised his average to .300.

Torres lowered his ERA to 2.75.  Noriega pitched a perfect inning.

Record:  Mazatlan is 16-19, in seventh place, seven games behind Obregon.  They are two games behind sixth-place Mexicali.

Mazatlan Recaps: Game Thirty-four

MAZATLAN 6, CULIACAN 2 AT MAZATLAN

Batting stars:  Isaac Paredes was 3-for-4 with a home run, his second.  Ricky Alvarez was 1-for-4 with a home run, his fifth.

Pitching stars:  Ignacio Marrujo pitched four innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks and striking out two.  Five pitchers each pitched a scoreless inning:  Marco Antonio Duarte, Gabino Avalos, Marco Antonio Rivas, Roberto Espinosa, and Jesus Pirela.

Opposition stars:  Alejandro Chavez pitched five shutout innings of relief, giving up no hits and two walks and striking out three.  Joey Meneses was 2-for-4 with a double.  Jose Guadalupe Chavez was 2-for-4 with a walk.

The game:  Almost everything happened in the first inning.  In the top of the first, Chavez walked, Michael Wing singled, Meneses had an RBI single, and a fielder's choice made it 2-0 Culiacan.  In the bottom of the inning, singles by Ramon Rios and Paredes were followed by an error that loaded the bases with one out.  Anthony Giansanti then hit a bases-clearing triple and scored on a wild pitch.  Alvarez followed with a home run to make it 5-2 Mazatlan.

And there it stayed, inning after inning.  The only other score was when Paredes led off the bottom of the eighth with a home run, bringing us to the final score of 6-2.

WP:  Duarte (1-2).  LP:  Hector Galvan (0-1).  S:  None.

Notes:  Paredes raised his average to .365.  Italo Mota was used as a pinch-runner and remains at .348.  Carlos Munoz was 0-for-4 and is batting .317.

Avalos has an ERA of zero.  Rivas is at 2.08.  Espinosa is at 2.37.  Pirela is at 1.42.

Mazatlan had just three at-bats with men in scoring position, going 1-for-3.  In contrast, Culiacan had eleven at-bats with men in scoring position, going 2-for-11.

Record:  Mazatlan is 16-18, in seventh place, six games behind Obregon.  They are only one game out of fifth place.

Mazatlan Recap: Game Thirty-one

CULIACAN 5, MAZATLAN 2 IN MAZATLAN

Batting stars:  Carlos Munoz was 3-for-4.  Anthony Giansanti was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.

Pitching stars:  Tomas Solis pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up two hits.  Juan Ramon Noriega pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up a hit and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Manny Barreda pitched 6.1 innings, giving up two runs on ten hits and one walk and striking out two.  Jose Guadalupe Chavez was 3-for-5 with two doubles and two runs.  Alexis Wilson was 2-for-3 with a walk.  Alan Sanchez was 2-for-3.  Michael Wing was 2-for-5 with a two-run homer, his fourth.  Ramiro Pena was 2-for-5 with a two-run homer, his third.

The game:  Mazatlan scored in the first when Isaac Paredes doubled and scored on a Munoz single.  Culiacan tied it in the second when Eric Meza doubled and scored on an Alan Sanchez single.  Mazatlan took a 2-1 lead in the fourth when Munoz singled, went to third on a Giansanti double, and scored on a sacrifice fly.

It was all Culiacan from there.  In the fifth Chavez doubled and Pena homered to put Culiacan up 3-2.  It stayed 3-2 until the ninth, when Chavez singled and Wing homered, bringing it to the total of 5-2.

WP:  Barreda (4-2).  LP:  Carlos Morales (2-1).  S:  Alberto Baldonado (9).

Notes:  Paredes was 1-for-4 and is batting .339.  Munoz raised his average to .328.  Jose Augusto Figueroa was 1-for-4 and is batting .314.

Morales started and pitched 4.1 innings, giving up three runs on eight hits and one walk and striking out four.

Noriega's ERA remains zero.  Gabino Avalos retired the only man he faced and also has an ERA of zero.

Mazatlan had eleven hits and two walks, but scored just two runs.  They had only two extra-base hits, both doubles.

Record:  Mazatlan is 15-18, in eighth place, seven games behind Obregon.  They are only one game out of sixth.

NAVOJOA 4, MAZATLAN 1 IN NAVOJOA (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Sunday

Navojoa scored all four of their runs in the sixth.  Christian Zazueta hit a three-run homer, his sixth.  Mazatlan was led by Maxwell Leon, who was 2-for-3 with a double.  Francisco Rios struck out eight in 5.1 innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on one hit and two walks.

NAVOJOA 2, MAZATLAN 1 IN NAVOJOA (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

Sunday

A Fernando Flores RBI single with two out in the fourth broke a 1-1 tie.  Mazatlan was led by Ricky Alvarez, who was 2-for-3 with a home run, his fourth.  Marco Antonio Duarte pitched five innings, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk and striking out four.

MAZATLAN 3, CULIACAN 2 IN MAZATLAN

Tuesday

Mazatlan scored all three of their runs in the third inning.  They had only one hit in the inning, a bunt single, but got the benefit of two walks and an error.  Matt Gage pitched five innings for Mazatlan, giving up one run on five hits and two walks and striking out four.

Record:  Mazatlan is 15-17, in eighth place, seven games behind Obregon.  However, they are only one game out of fifth.

Next game:  Mazatlan hosts Culiacan tonight.

Mazatlan Recap: Game Twenty-nine

NAVOJOA 2, MAZATLAN 1 IN NAVOJOA

Batting star:  Maxwell Leon was 1-for-4 with a home run.

Pitching stars:  Edgar Torres pitched seven innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and two walks and striking out three.  Juan Ramon Noriega pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a walk.

Opposition stars:  Felix Doubront pitched seven innings, giving up one run on three hits and two walks and striking out five.  Asael Sanchez was 2-for-3 with a home run.  Omar Renteria was 2-for-3 with a walk.  Christian Zazueta was 2-for-4 with a double.

The game:  Navojoa scored in the first when Renteria singled, went to second on a wild pitch, and scored on Zazueta's double.  Leon homered with two out in the third to tie it 1-1.  Mazatlan got all three of their hits in that inning, as two singles followed, but a fly out kept the score at 1-1.

The only other score came in the seventh, when Sanchez homered.  That made it 2-1, and that's where it stayed.

WP:  Doubront (4-2).  LP:  Torres (2-3).  S:  Carlos Bustamonte (5).

Notes:  Isaac Paredes was 1-for-4 and is batting .378.  Jose Augusto Figueroa was 0-for-1 and is batting .333.  Carlos Munoz was 0-for-4 and is batting .314.

Torres lowered his ERA to 2.98.  Noriega has an ERA of zero.

As noted above, Mazatlan had only three hits and got them all in the same inning, the third.  I wonder what the record is for most hits where you got them all in one inning.

Record:  Mazatlan is 14-15, in seventh place, 6.5 games behind Obregon.   They are a half game out of sixth and one game out of fifth.

Mazatlan Recap: Game Twenty-eight

MAZATLAN 3, HERMOSILLO 1 IN MAZATLAN

Batting stars:  Hector Mora was 2-for-4 with a double.  Ricky Alvarez was 2-for-4 with a double.

Pitching stars:  Carlos Morales pitched six innings, giving up one run on six hits and no walks and striking out four.  Alejandro Soto pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk and striking out one.  Roberto Espinosa pitched a perfect inning, striking out one.  Jesus Pirela struck out two in a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Irving Lopez was 2-for-3 with two doubles.  Alex Robles was 2-for-4.  Rafael Martin struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk.

The game:  Mazatlan opened the scoring in the second.  An error and a walk put men on first and second with one out, and a Mora single made it 1-0.  Mazatlan scored again in the fourth on walks to Ramon Rios and Ricardo Valenzuela and a double by Edson Garcia, making it 2-0.

Hermosillo got on the board in the fifth when Lopez led off with a double and scored on a pair of ground outs.  Mazatlan got the run back in the seventh when Carlos Munoz singled, Alvarez doubled, and Rios singled, leaving the score 3-1.

That was it.  The last seven Hermosillo batters were retired, and the score remained 3-1 Mazatlan.

WP:  Morales (2-0).  LP:  Jose Cerda (0-1).  S:  Pirela (6).

Notes:  Isaac Paredes was 1-for-4 and is batting .390.  Jose Augusto Figueroa was 0-for-5 and is batting .339.  Munoz was 1-for-3 and is batting .327.

Espinosa lowered his ERA to 2.12.  Pirela is down to 0.84.

Hermosillo was 0-for-6 with men in scoring position, stranding six.  Mazatlan was just 3-for-15, but getting fifteen at-bats with runners in scoring position is always a good thing.  They stranded ten.

Despite the low score, the game again took over three hours, coming in at 3:05.  Apparently the length of games is not just a major league baseball issue.

Record:  Mazatlan is 14-14, in seventh place, seven games behind the Yaquis de Obregon.  They are a half game behind sixth-place Jalisco, and also a half game out of fifth and just a game out of third.

Mazatlan Recap: Game Twenty-seven

MAZATLAN 3, HERMOSILLO 0 IN MAZATLAN

Batting star:  Maxwell Leon was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs.

Pitching stars:  Matt Gage struck out six in six shutout innings, giving up one hit and one walk.  Roberto Espinosa pitched a perfect inning.  Jesus Pirela pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and striking out one.

Opposition stars:  Jorge Castillo pitched 4.2 innings, giving up two runs on three hits and four walks and striking out none.  Alan Rangel pitched two perfect innings.

The game:  It was scoreless until the third.  Ricardo Valenzuela doubled and Jose Augusto Figueroa drew a one-out walk.  Leon singled home a run and Isaac Paredes doubled home another, making it 2-0 Mazatlan.  It stayed 2-0 until the eighth, when Leon homered.

That's pretty much it.  Hermosillo did not get a baserunner until the fourth, when a leadoff single and a one-out walk put men on first and second.  They also put men on first and second with one out in the seventh.

WP:  Gage (1-0).  LP:  Castillo (1-2).  S:  Pirela (5).

Notes:  Paredes was 1-for-4 and is batting .405.  Figueroa was 0-for-2 and is batting .373.  Carlos Munoz was 0-for-4 and is batting .327.  Anthony Giansanti was 0-for-1 and is batting .310.  Giansanti came out of the game after being hit by a pitch in the sixth inning.

Marco Antonio Rivas struck out the only man he faced and has an ERA of 2.70.  Espinosa's ERA is 2.25.  Pirela's ERA is 0.93.

Despite the fact that it was a 3-0 game and there were only eight hits, the game took 3 hours and 6 minutes to play.

Record:  Mazatlan is 13-14, in seventh place, eight games behind the Yaquis de Obregon.  They are a half game behind sixth-place Jalisco.
