for your consideration, here's a blonde bombshell in a pink frilly dress at a grand piano spitting mad english:

peckish jane loves this woman. at first, i couldn't decide if i liked her, or if she annoyed me. i've decided that i kind of like her, but she kind of annoys me.
+ points for mentioning Harry Caray and Wellstone (!)
- points because she kind of annoys me.
i've only got her first album so far, and i have to admit, it's gotten a lot more airtime than i thought it would. it's catchy as all hell, though quite schizophrenic in its genres. i thought the pitchfork review actually describes it quite well.
When I was doing my radio show at MSUM, it was around when this album came out. We had a sampler which had like 7 or 8 songs, and for each song, there was a weird rambling 2 minute little interview type segment where she discussed each track. They were insane (in the good way), and though we never played anything from the record (which I'm fond of) we played a few of those interviews. Pretty interesting stuff, and worth checking out if you ever get the chance. My partner loves Nellie McKay, and I'd told her all about this interview disc. She was totally pumped when we found a copy at Cheapo on one of our last trips to Minnneapolis.
This is a total aside, but discussing this makes me have a strong desire to listen to On Vacation by The Robot Ate Me. It was another double album that came out around the same time, but this one we did feature on our show pretty frequently. Going to do that as soon as I get home.
I really loved her first album. Haven't ever gotten into her later ones, though.
Agreed. I met her at an in-store performance the week her first album came out and she was very nice. I like her smarts and quirkiness, which means she can be hit or miss. But she's an original.
I own one, but it wasn't half as good as the first, which is what got me interested in her. Always research first, Milkman.
This might have been LTE that made frightwig think I'm an ass. If true, one of my greatest miss-deeds. I still stand by in defense of Ms. Newsom.
She drives me nuts. I thought this might be something my wife could like back when this came out, but I never even shared it with her.
