  1. Fan graphs just had an article on Monday entitled "what's wrong with Francisco Liriano?"

      1. Headline in the Sac Bee above Joe C's story: Liriano staggers to a no-hitter

      2. I think Zach gets the honor, but I'm not sure. I'm a bit envious at whoever it is.

        1. It is I, who has not yet written in since I was at work until 3:30am and just got out of morning meetings. It's my lunch time plan, so I apologize to the citizenry for the delay.

          1. I stepped on your toes covered for you. Go ahead and add your own, but the next game is an afternooner.

            1. I am fine with that. I apologize for not getting anything ready/communicating more. Hopefully there comes a day soon when there isn't the potential for working 19 hours on any given day. Sigh.

  2. I kept hearing "Liriano is the last pitched Id expect to pitch a no hitter". To me, Nick Blackburn the last pitcher Id expect to through a no-no.

  3. .100/.151/.140/.291 : Drew Butera's slash line after last nights o-fer

    1. C'mon, man, the dude just called and caught a no-hitter! Who needs Mauer and his stinkin' Gold Gloves and Silver Sluggers?

  4. I rode my bike to work for the first time this year (which is a function of weather and after work schedule). Last year the first time I rode to work was March 29th, a 5 week difference.

    1. It’s a slow-motion car wreck in which we all have to fasten our seat belts, close our eyes and hope that the glass fragments don’t cut too deeply.

      What's the acronym... GOSO

    2. "Rule No. 1: You don’t get rid of a top-five manager in his prime."

      Heh.

  5. Totally missed last night's no-no, so I'm listening to it via Gordo & Dazzle at work this morning. Don't tell me how it ends.

    1. The White Sox make a 27th out, Ozzie walks out to SS, sits on his sled, and starts to cry.

  6. If you want to hear the various calls for the final out, a video player on the Twins site has it. Beau was right, Gordo's call was awesome.

    1. It is great that Gordo had the call for last night's game, his call was fantastic

      1. Yeah, especially on a limited schedule, the odds of him calling a historic road game were pretty low.

  7. Guess Buster Olney won't be getting a Christmas card from The Captain this year (sub. req.):

If Derek Jeter were anybody else, it's fair to say that he would have already been dropped in the lineup. Girardi doesn't want to move Jeter, apparently, and is probably concerned about embarrassing a proud player.

What Jeter should do, as captain of the Yankees, is to draw from Ripken's example. He should take the onus off the manager. He should go to Girardi and tell him he'll be ready to hit anywhere in the lineup, and that he'll be OK with it. Until that happens -- or until Jeter actually starts to hit -- the Captain's place in the lineup, and his deep slump, will continue to be the elephant in the room for Girardi, something that everybody sees but won't talk about.

Three years, $51 million, with a player option for the fourth year. I'd be laughing if I wasn't so nervous about Mauer's deal.

      1. I should clarify the player option:

$8M Player Option, $3M Buyout 2014 option may increase to $17M based on points earned for Gold Glove, Silver Slugger, LCS MVP, WS MVP or top 6 in AL MVP

        Here's to more Gold Gloves!!!!

    1. I say laugh away. Mauer's deal was given to a young guy coming off a pretty good few years. Jeter's deal was given to an old guy coming off one of the worst years of his career in a hilariously public negotiation that made Jeter look like a jerk (to me).

    1. My next step is to figure out tree style what the chances are from going from 1-1 to 2-1 vs. going from 1-1 to 1-2, starting from 0-0 and going out at least to 4-4.

      1. Brah prolly didn't see a whole lot after all the Smirnoff Ice he had pounded...

(That is a solid hit by the rent-a-cop.)

        1. The thing I've never got about running onto the field is that you're going to get tased/caught/tackled/fined,and the majority of the crowd thinks you're a douche . Those were some mighty expensive seats he gave up to get mauled by one of the grounds crew.

          1. Not unless he had two in the game, but it still wouldn't be true because the one Passan mentioned was the final groundout of the game. Morneau had another one today, too.

    1. He had a decent 2008 as well and his 2006 was pretty good. Oh great, the Twins have an even year only pitcher.

      1. mebbe the Twins could bring back Saberhagen and they could alternate years in the rotation?

    2. He was warming up in the bullpen in the ninth anyway, just in case Liriano gave up a hit, because it’s not like he was blowing away the White Sox.

Whatever. It was because it was 1-0 game and a hit means the Twins are really close to losing the game.

      1. 120 pitches, if Liriano gives up a hit, of course he's coming out. This is just the flip side of Gardy pulling Slowey last year when he had his no-hitter going. Writers have to write about something, I guess.

    3. I liked Passan as recently as last year. I don't know what kind of "tone" he's trying for in his columns anymore, but mostly he's just coming off as a prick.

      1. I liked him, and still do. I don't see the issue with this article. I remember articles like this after Jackson's no-hitter. They aren't all dazzling like Docs. Sometimes they're fairly taxing. And like socal said, this was quite possibly the least dominating no-hitter in the history of baseball.

    4. His previous start was such a disaster the Twins were considering dropping him from the rotation, a stark threat to a pitcher who last year started the first game of their playoff series and struck out 201 in 191 2/3.

    5. Liriano's no-hitter tied for the worst game score for a no-hitter at 83.

  9. I'm tired of reading that Liriano pitched a "surprise" no-hitter. Every no-hitter ever thrown has an element of surprise to it.

    1. The surprise wasn't that he was part of a no-hitter but that he completed one by himself. He had never thrown a complete game in his professional career. In fact, given his control problems this year, it would have been more surprising for him to complete a game without it being a no-hitter, considering the extra batters he would have to face.

    2. Plus, it isn't the most surprising no-hitter by a Twin because Scott Erickson led the league in hits allowed in the season that he pitched his no-hitter.

  10. What's wrong with the White Sox? Ozzie interviews when the White Sox suck are pure gold.

We used to solve the mental problem with vodka and a lot of Budweiser.

  11. Heard by Barreiro on my way home from work:

"If the Twins were to win 2 out of every 3 games in a season, how many wins is that? It's got to be around a hundred, right? Well, I'm sure one of our sabermetric geeks will call in and let us know."

My freaking GOD, it's third grade math we're talking here. I figured out the answer in my head in about three seconds.

  12. Twins option Holm to Rochester. I'd like to see them bring up Danny Lehmann.

    1. I'd like to see Mauer healthy. Your wish might be more likely right now.
