  1. I wish Omar Miniya were still the GM of the Mets. Maybe they would bite on a Delmon Young for Carlos Beltran trade.

  2. "To get that first one out of the way, it's definitely nice, especially the way it's been pretty tough for us in the ninth inning lately," Nathan said.

Emphasis mine...subtle dig, or simple honesty?

    1. I think he's trying to protect his teammate while still telling the truth. Players and coaches tend to use "we" a lot even when they're not involved, just putting it on the team when it's obviously the failure of one or two guys.

      1. That's true. Also, I don't know the context - what question he was answering - perhaps it's safe to assume he was trying to answer a direct/indirect "Capps question" without bagging on the guy whose job he just took.

        1. That's about right, from my vague recollection of the interview. There was a bit of "blah blah blah" about how Capps has been struggling, and we need to get him right because we're gonna need him out there.

  3. The cheaptoy blonde ale is underway. I couldn't find the exact hops I wanted, so I had to make an audible, which will likely push the IBU's up to about 80. Also, the wort is boiling on its own in the sun as its so hot outside I don't even need to add heat to the pot.

    1. I've known a few bitter blondes. Hope (for your sake) that this one is more pleasant.

I was just going to go for the easy Rod Stewart reference, thought better of it, then figured, "What the h*ll, these people know that's about as clever as I get."

      1. If it makes you feel any better, is was clever enough that I didn't get the Rod Stewart reference. (Which might also have a lot to do with me not knowing any Rod Stewart references.)

I am planning a seriously manly day today. I'm brewing this morning and plan to smoke some salmon later today.

        1. I think cheaptoy has sufficient Blonde Ambition. Hey, you could make an Imperial blonde and call it "Blonde on Blonde". Has that been done yet? It seems so obvious....

          1. Sounds like a project. Also, I'm not gonna google that on a work laptop to see if there are any other beers by that name.

            1. Google site search to the rescue. I found two examples.

Luckily, you can't copyright a title. Trademark? I suppose one could, but then Zimmy would probably have dibs, would he not?

              1. Luckily, you can't copyright a title

I think Magic Hat would like to have a word with you.

Fortunately, that beer you linked to was simply a strong ale and not rated all that well. Maybe this could be my big break!

                1. the first link was to a pale made by some brewpub in Connecticut. But, yea.

from the US Copyright Office FAQ:

Copyright does not protect names, titles, slogans, or short phrases. In some cases, these things may be protected as trademarks. Contact the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, 800-786-9199, for further information. However, copyright protection may be available for logo artwork that contains sufficient authorship. In some circumstances, an artistic logo may also be protected as a trademark.

                  1. Heh, I clicked on 'example' thinking the two words were just one link. In my defense, I've been out in the sun drinking all morning.

Still, Magic Hat were kind of dicks for their "9" lawsuit a bit ago. Can't remember how that turned out, though.

                    1. yea, what an awful, awful precedent (I know, not technically, since it wasn't tested or confirmed in court). You can't put the number 9 in your beer name just because Magic F'ing Hat has one in a registered trademark?

                    1. Wow, I misremembered the shit out of that whole ordeal and I think I never actually saw the "9" in "9LB" and its fairly similar resemblance to the Magic Hat "9". My bad, sorry MH.

    2. Cheap, I was just thinking* that (if you could find the time) you could do a guest post about the brewing of this yet-to-be-named blonde ale? I know there's tons of home brewing information online, but I'd be interested in reading a post about your process.

*From our "Features" page under Barley Pops and Hop Hits:
Guest posts are welcomed, and home brew sharing strongly encouraged.
Check on the second, but not the first for you.

      1. You know, I probably should do that some time. (even if, technically, the Barley Pops and Hits are beer reviews. But hell, this site is half bakef, so why not?) Now, I'm fairly well on the drunk side of buzzing at this point, and I don't take notes so my memory may be iffy. But, I can write a post brewing game log if Citizens are interested. Or, I can wait until next time I brew and take pictures. I'll leave it up to a vote.

        1. I'd be down with a post brewing game log. Perhaps while you're sitting around watching that salmon take some smoke?

        2. technically, the Barley Pops category began as away-city beer tours. I think it is big enough to sustain anything beer related. I use the "Pint-Sized Reviews" tag for the specific beer reviews.

You all are welcome to contribute under either or both of those banners. They belong to the wgom, not me. I assign all rights and privileges to the (future) corporation.

    3. Also, smoke some salmon later today

I'll use the phrase though it's not mine: pictures or it didn't happen.

  4. Softball and "Breaking Bad" are both at 9 tonight. I'm gonna root for a lot of 1-2-3 innings and a 40 minute game time. That might let me catch the 10PM airing.

  5. Seen on MLB.com this morning: the White Sox are "surging" and "inching closer to the top" of the AL Central.

The Sox are 4-6 in their last ten.

    1. To be fair, I would say Adam Dunn was surging if he had 20 hits in his last 100 ABs.

  6. Paging Dread Pirate: although it comes from the 4ltr, this is kind of neat. That he followed 56 with another 16 after one "off" day for 72/73 is just insane.

  7. Fortunately, Jimmer jacked a donger
Unfortunately, the Dunce gave one back
    Fortunately, the bullpen came through
Unfortunately, the futbol women snatched defeat from the jaws of victory
Fortunately, I have the crock pot going with meat's pork adovada/adobada recipe for tonight (what's the difference, you might ask? I don't really know. Both are things. Mebbe the adovada is more New Mexican. I followed meat's recipe pretty closely)

  8. Ugh. Baker to the DL, Diamond and Swarzak tomorrow.

On the plus side, Tolbert optioned and CHUCK JAMES! recalled.

    1. did she take a life insurance policy out on you recently, beau? sounds like she's found out about your WGOM escapades.

  9. SBGville bracing for another storm. It should be here I. The next five minutes or so. Skies are very threatening and extremely dark.

    1. Extremely heavy rain and very strong straight line winds. Trees are really bowing over and the occasional small branch is flying by. And now some small hail.

      1. Still raining hard, but the worst appears to be over. Winds have let up considerably. We missed the worst of the storm, it appears.

        1. And now blue skies to the west. That was a very intense storm, but it wasn't very big.

  10. btw, with the double header tomorrow, should I do game logs for both games, or does someone else want to pick up game 2??
