Francisco Liriano vs Gio Gonzalez
The MLB.com short blurb on each pitcher sounds rather similar:
Lasting just 2 1/3 innings on Sunday, Liriano clearly did not have his best stuff against the Tigers and was unable to battle through it. The lefty gave up four runs on six hits and four walks with three strikeouts.
For the second time in three starts, Gonzalez was unable to get through the fifth, leaving after 4 2/3 innings. He gave up six earned runs on seven hits, including a homer, and struck out five. His 2.67 ERA is still seventh-best in the AL.
Here's to extending Gonzalez's struggles for a third time in four starts.
Mauer needs to talk to Abraham Erskine about some serum and vita-rays.
I like coming home to a lead.
Home earlier than me. What a loooong wedding.
Thanks for helping me contribute to the Buffalo economy.
Cheektowaga economy, but we will take it.
Alright, Frankie. Buckle down.
I find it very amusing the the Oakland ballpark even looks like a dump on Gameday.
I find it less amusing that I tuned in just as Franky gave up that donger.
That was a nice slide by Mauer, taking out Suzuki's feet and knocking him off-balance. If you're not blocking the plate, you probably shouldn't be standing on it.
I had wondered why he slid so late. That makes sense (although it seems like a pretty good way for him to get hurt).
Tolbot steal activated.
Where are all of the citizens tonight? It is Friday night! It isn't like we have better things to do.
Working. I hate this.
Also working, but bailing soon. Soothing sounds of whatever clown is in the booth for the Twins tonight on my way home.
Vintage Frankie K there.
What is everybody drinking tonight? I have a semi-local offering here.
Diet Mountain Dew.
Coca-Cola Classic.
You guys can use links, you know.
Coke Advocate wasn't what I thought it'd be.
STONER'S POT PALACE
"That is flagrant false advertising, man."
Hehe. Solid reference.
I find there's a Simpsons reference for literally every situation. After this many episodes, there had better be.
I feel the same about Mr. Show.
I guess that's possible, but how many episodes did they do? Not many.
A co-writer of mine goes by "MenojewFenderman" on PSN.
I believe it was 30 in total, but I'm usually able to twist one in there for every situation.
But it's probably my favorite show ever, soooo...
I've tucked into one of these.
That looks terrific.
The smell is something else, and it's only just sweet enough.
SN Torpedo for the first time in a few months.
Sweet molasses. A's infielders channeling the Twins here.
HAHA. Gio gets in on the humor.
And Cuddy channels Mauer, or Wells, with that DP.
He knew the DP would score the run. So he went for it.
I was all excited for the "in play, Runs", then it turns out Cuddy just erased Mauer from the basepath. Stupid gameday.
So, what have I missed? Looks like a pitcher's duel.
Liriano gave up his runs on a monster homer on a 3-0 fastball. Other than that they haven't had much.
Also the A's infield is broke.
The A's guy mentions that Liriano's no-hitter was "the seventh in the history of the Twins/Senators franchise." That really took me aback, since the home feed prefers to pretend we don't have a long, interesting history.
Have I expressed how much that aggravates me? I think I have.
You have, and I have always been right there with you.
Cheers, Milkman.
Cheers, Survivor.
I thought Twins history began in 1987.
Wow, Treasure Island has shows from Buckcherry, Whitesnake, and Frank Calliendo this summer? I wish I lived closer so I could attend these events. 🙁
Back when you couldn't swing a dead cat without running into Frank Caliendo, I actually liked him a little.
The ominpresent FrankTV ads during whatever playoff season that was eroded any amusement I got from him.
Yup. Same. By the time the show was about to premiere, I didn't want to see it anymore.
Next year they will have Sugar Ray, Bad Company, and George Lopez.
A's trivia question pretty simple today: Who were the last two Twins pitchers to have no-hitters?
Bonus points for remembering the dates off the top of your head.
Milton's date is very easy to remember.
Couldn't tell you Liriano's, though.
What's crazy is that Eric Milton is only 35 years old.
Yeah? He was a good strikeout pitcher...I always thought he'd be more relevant than he was.
I love that you put this in a spoiler.
Tolbot. On base machine.
Pence to the Phillies. Did all y'all know that? The Phillies are...good.
The haul the Astros got is impressive. The Phillies are going to be very tough the next couple of years. It's weird. The Yankees bother me immensely by spending tons of money. The Red Sox & Phillies much, much less so. I'm not a huge fan of the fans of either team, but I like the way they both play baseball. Assuming the Twins aren't in the World Series, I think a Red Sox v. Phillies Series would be fun to watch.
That was my prediction before this year. I realize predicting the playoffs is a fool's errand, but I always do it anyway.
Mine as well.
So, the Phillies got Pence for four prospects.
They're really going to suck in 5-6 years.
Well, yeah. Maybe they assume they'll find a fountain of youth before then.
And a taker for Ryan Howard's albatross of a contract.
While they're at it they'd better find one of those trillion dollar coins to help them with Ryan Howard's contract.
It's weird, because you'd think a team that handed the world to a 1B wouldn't have the smarts to be all that successful. Maybe they lucked into it (although drafting a monster like Utley was hardly luck, I suppose).
Well, their former GM is in the Hall of Fame and was in control through 2008. Also, trading for three ace pitchers (and getting piddly returns when you trade one away again) doesn't help.
I think that was predestined when they hired Gillick. He seems to operate under a scorched earth philosophy. Since he left the Orioles, they haven't had a winning record. The Blue Jays didn't finish higher than 3rd place for 13 years since his departure. The Mariners have averaged 72 wins a season since Gillick left. None of those teams have made the playoffs since Gillick left.
A's guy congratulated Bert before the game, and Bert showed him the HOF ring. "It even says 'pitcher' on it, so in a few years when I'm old and people ask me what I have the ring for, I can remember."
The ham is willing, but the fleisch is weak.
I think Joe Mauer should wear an Olerud style helmet playing first. I would like that.
Co-sign. Especially if he wears the throwback helmet at home.
The A's guys were really incredulous at Bert not being in the Hall until now. They've gone on about it more in the last fifteen minutes than Bert ever has.
Plouffe to Tolbert to Mauer. It has a real Tinkers to Evers to Chance ring doesn't it?
These are the saddest of possible words:
“Plouffe to Tolbert to Mauer.”
Trio of Minnesota Twins, and fleeter than birds,
Plouffe to Tolbert to Mauer.
Ruthlessly pricking our gonfalon bubble,
Making an Athletic hit into a double –
Words that are heavy with nothing but trouble:
“Plouffe to Tolbert to Mauer.”
In fairness, the awesomeness of Tinker to Evers to Chance was overstated. That's all I got.
But not Plouffe to Tolbert to Mauer.
No, the awesomeness of that trio is not overstated. In fact, I've never heard the awesomeness of that combo stated, period.
I love a good drag bunt.
Too bad that wasn't one.
I like Revere's wheels, but I will be happy and glad to see Span back.
....After his contract runs out with the Nationals.
I saw someone on Twitter say Span & Revere were "the same player." The stupidity in that statement is astounding.
To be fair, if you add the numbers on the back of Revere's jersey together you get the number on the back of Span's.
If you split
Ricky HendersonDenard Span in half you get Ben Revere.Zack, you seem to either know or follow a lot of dumbasses on Twitter.
Unfortunately stupidity is frequently re-Tweeted.
Not that I'm a master Tweeter. On that note, I should probably go Tweet some rap lyrics.
Plouffe'd
And then Plouffe'd in another way.
Wow, Blue really blew that second strike call.
Well, at least it only cost the Twins a lot, potentially.
I am pretty sure Crisp could have ran from center to double up Plouffe! there.
I'm not a huge fan of the Faith Minute commercials on the radio feed. A huge part of this is the guy's condescending voice. I'm not 15.
I've thought the same thing on the occasions I've been blacked out of the TV feed.
Ah, the Faith Minute. I miss a lot of things about Minnesota. That's not one of them.
YDNPUIFTOJM.
Duh.
Anytime you can walk Drew Butera on four pitches to load the bases you've gotta do it
Butera intimidates Gonzalez into a 4-pitch walk.
Way to do The Wave just as your pitcher starts his windup, fans behind home plate.
It always blows my mind how home fans don't understand what The Wave is for.
I don't understand what it's for, which is why I never participate.
twins walkball.
Heheheh.
Twins playing Moneyball all of a sudden.
I hope the movie is good.
I just hope that it translates to people outside baseball. It's an enormous risk. How do you explain it to non-baseball people? I have a bad feeling that it has a very small audience.
BUT IT WAS A BEST SELLER!!!11!!111
Do nerds like us go to the movies? Hell, do we go outside (our mothers' basements)???
I never read the book, but I'll probably see the movie.
That play is a little bit closer if Tolbert doesn't slide there.
Luke, you are not a Jedi yet.
anyone else see that?
seriously, anyone with the ability to do so, go back and watch that attempted DP. willingham totally tried to forearm plouffe! in the nuts when he was breaking up the play.
Yeah I saw that, he was nearly past Plouffe when he did it too.
Too bad Plouffe's nuts are made of steel.
Yeah, I caught it on the replay. Dirty pool, that.
Tolbert to Plouffe to
ChanceMauer!Plouffe to Tolbert to Mauer, FTLT. Not quite right, but still...awesome.
Or that, whatever.
Sweet turn at second by the 'bot.
Pedroia's hit streak is over! Yes, I'm happy. What of it?
I hate Petunia almost as much as I hate Jetes. He's Boston's Cap'n Dreamboat.
Don't be too happy. Pierzynski was the hero of that game.
Oh, gross.
elm'n doesn't walk often but...
...when he does, he drinks Dos Equis?
I think a "Drink every time Delmon walks" game would leave college kids pretty unfulfilled.
...when he does he'll make up for it with a dozen terrible at bats?
Hmm, Tolbert's BA was .201 before that foul out. At least we don't have to worry about Butera's average reaching that lofty height.
Mario Mendoza looks at this team and thinks, "Damn, I could be a starter for these guys."
Looks like they were pitching around Butters for a reason.
Ploufferdoodle having his big night when most of the Central time zone is sleeping. Poor dope.
Look at that disrespect, Cuddy!
Time to go boom.
spooky!
Oh, snap. I finally spooky another Twins donger and Homer scoops me? He'll pay.
He called it out loud so it isn't actually a Spooky, right?
I'd like to think of it as a threat.
Hey, you're right! My gimmick's safe.
Make 'em pay, Cuddy.
BOOM!
Boom. I Spookied that one, not that anyone's awake to hear about it.
I had him in both BTS and HRBTS.
So this development was very welcome.
Niiiiiice. Having a good year?
I had a HRBTS of 6 last year, which is probably the best I can ever hope for. This year, 2.
I had a 12 BTS this year. Nice enough, but nowhere near nice enough.
I'm terrible at both of them because I pick almost exclusively Twins.
It's going to be 5 in BTS and 1 in HRBTS after tonight though.
So Spooky!
Delmon has walked twice in the same game? I... wow.
Well, if the world ends tonight, I'm sorry I never got meet any of you in person.
Whoa, is that two BB for Delmon? Didn't someone just say this was the least likely thing they ever saw?
Yup, I mentioned that in yesterday's game log. Shortly before I called for a flyball to bounce off his melon and over the fence. I really want that to happen tonight, now.
the last time Delmon had a 2 walk game was Apr 30 last year
Alright, I feel okay with this lead and am calling it a night. Please don't disappoint me in the AM, Twins.
No worries. When have the Twins ever blown a big lead to the A's?
CUDDY WAS SAFE! #%@Q^!
No arguments here.
Did we really need to have a Hawk home run call there, Kris? Yuck.
Oh, he didn't.
Oh, he did.
Stretch. Streeeeetch.
Gross.
Tolbert managed to make two outs that inning, so it looks like equilibrium has been restored.
Is equilibrium having as many batters in your lineup below .200 as there are batters over .300? Mauer's going to get us all lopsided again soon.
I hate you, Neck Fat.
Go away, Neck Fat.
Nice mopping up, Neck Fat.
A's feed talking about Cust being let go by the Mariners today. "Well, if he's not hitting homers, he's not that valuable, and last year he wasn't hitting them either." Uh, the primary reason the A's wanted him was his on-base ability. Last year it was .395.
Chuck James could've done that.
But he wouldn't have!
/AMR
/And everyone else who has seen Mijares this year
Burnett in with just a 4-run lead.
Living dangerously.
The Save is already an embarrassing enough stat - why not start basing it on the pitcher? For Burnett, any lead above seven innings is good for a save. For the league's elite, just one or two.
I'm in favor of creating a 'moral victory' stat.
I would take it exactly as seriously as I take the Save.
How about a closer save? If your performance prevents the team from having to bring in the closer, then you get a closer save. Even the winning pitcher and a batter can get that one.
When Burnett's getting that call, you know the ump is either tired or drunk.
Why can't he be both? Either way looks like Gardy came to his senses.
DOH!
I'm thinking this ump is a tired drunk, from some of his other calls tonight.
He was certainly in a hurry to leave after that last strike.
Weeks going for the grand slam with one man on base
Perkins on cruise control.
Well, we backed into it, but it's a win nonetheless.
Much easier with Perk than with Burnett.
Who'd have thunk it?
night, all.
