August 14, 2011: Los Angeles

My plans today include waking up at 5:30 for Stoke-Chelsea, using that time to finish packing what isn't in my van already, and leaving for LA in time to arrive at my new home around 6pm. I'm predicting none of it working out correctly.

    1. I'm watching Sky Sports News on FSC right now. It's my favorite because it covers mostly soccer and rugby, with a bit of cricket.

Also good is Republica Deportiva. God bless the TV exec who decided to pair sports highlights with scantily-clad women. Who cares if my Spanish is atrocious.

    2. The problem I have with the Sports Reporters is that they have the same old people every week. Lupica *yawn* Mitch Albom...does he write about sports anymore?

      1. I'm surprised to learn a) that The Sports Reporters is still on the air and b) that anyone actually watches it.

    1. Well...

I did see my Stoke-Chelsea match this morning, although I missed the first half with some much-needed sleep. We've packed everything into my van and I was totally ready to go when it was discovered that the car that's supposed to take Skim to school tomorrow isn't running.

So, after all this waiting, it looks like I'll be waiting one more day. I'm glad I don't believe in signs, because if I did, I'd probably assume I wasn't supposed to go there.

In all honesty, although we made this plan two and a half months ago, and I've known where I'm going to live in LA for over a month and a half, I've had this nagging feeling the entire time that I'd never once set foot in the place.

  1. Fifteen hours on the road yesterday, OKC to Minneapolis, and I drove the whole way. Talk about buns of steel...

    1. We were like ships passing in the night. The Good Dr. and I had to bolt from MN quite a bit earlier than we had anticipated, and I ended up driving almost 17 hours straight. Sorry Mags, we'll have to attempt to hit a czech brewery.

    2. Twayn, did you get drunk and get in a fight with Kendrick Perkins while you were down there?

  2. My wife bought me the 1991 WS dvds way before my birthday. I'm watching game 1 (and do intend to watch games 3, 4, and 5, by the way) and have an observation and a theory.

Observation: Scott Leius was weird shaped.

Theory: McCarver is, while not the greatest color guy ever, entirely listenable so far. My theory, since they've since paired him with Jack Buck's son, is that he is currently acting the boob on purpose to try to sabotage Joe Buck's sh*tting all over his father's name. Thus far he has, sadly, been unsuccessful as he may have overestimated his audience.

    1. I am actually on game 6 tonight! I agree, Leius was shaped a little strangely. I just watched the Kirby triple in the first and felt the need to come here and post about it.

I have a feeling that I am really going to like how tonight shapes up.

      1. I might modify my theory on McCarver, he's gone much more to the side of insufferable in game 2.

Buck: "I know some of you like to keep score at home. That play went 7-1-3-umpire."
McCarver: "Heh, heh, it went 7-1-3-you."

        What?

        1. It keeps getting worse, trust me. I think Game One just happened to be the one exception in his otherwise rnitr career of being a butt head.

          1. He just made the argument that he doesn't know how the umpire can say what a guy's momentum is doing while at the same time "knowing" what Hrbek's muscles were doing.

          1. Ah, I see. I guess that makes more sense, but the way he said it was really awkward, like an idiot sidekick.

      2. Spoiler SelectShow
    2. You know, this put a thought into my head. I think it'd be a good time, once everyone here gets this DVD, to spent a couple weeks all watching the games at the same time while game logging it as if the WGOM existed 20 years ago.

      1. that does sound like fun. Plus, science has proven that knowing the ending doesn't ruin a good story.

      2. This could save us all from watching football on Sundays this fall. In other words, count me in.

        1. But why would you not want to watch football? Peter King told me that Brad Smith was, essentially, the missing piece.

          1. Every time he touched the bal the Bills got a first down. Or at least the two times he touched the ball before I turned the game off.

            1. Oh yeah, games have started. I completely forgot about that. I feel like Goodell should be kicked in the balls for not shortening the preaseason to 2 games and advocating 6.

      3. That's a great idea! We could officially start the Game 1 DVD as this year's Game 1 is starting, and watch them during each WS game. Assuming this year's goes seven games, and has teams we don't want to watch.

          1. More rhetorical to see if anyone else was interested. Everyone playing it on their own would be best legality-wise, but synchronization issues will inevitably pop-up.

            1. no, i understand. as someone doesn't own them (but totally will before we do this), i think this is a capital idea.

  3. I bought a home gym system today. It's got a pull-up bar, ab wheel, and push-up thingies. I've decided that the next time I see mo chailín I want to be in the best shape I've ever been in. Half the time I don't like going to the gym because I don't like dealing people, so having the ability to work out in my own place should help.

      1. I really wanted some kettleballs, but they were a bit expensive for the 2 months I have still in the States. The set I got will cost me <$1/day while I'm still here.

  4. Looking for a little computer nerd advice. The Girl's netbook (an Asus Eee PC 1000HA with XP Home & SP3 installed) appears not to have the Windoze Backup Utility installed. I haven't been able to locate any utility disks just yet, nor can I find an obvious path to downloading and installing that utility from Micro$oft's website.

any (helpful) suggestions? I've resorted to copying most of her HD to my external drive as a backup. But I really don't want to have to do it that way in the future.

also, what about an emergency startup thingy? I'd like to be able to boot from a thumbdrive, as this thing has no cd/dvd drive, nor do I have an external one (although I do have the external HD and an external Iomega Zip250).

    1. also, what about an emergency startup thingy? I'd like to be able to boot from a thumbdrive, as this thing has no cd/dvd drive, nor do I have an external one
Any modern computer supports booting from USB these days. I don't have access to a netbook to check the booting process, but there should be an option during boot to select the boot drive/media. Checking quickly online suggests pressing Escape at the BIOS screen for a menu to choose.

For backups, I have no idea. Might be best to look into a commercial product. Possibly one that uses The Cloud, but then you'll have a recurring cost.

      1. Sean: the question is how I prepare the thumbdrive, given that I haven't been able to locate any system CDs that (presumably) came with the machine.

        1. Never done it, but I see a few options: WinToFlash and BartPE. Both presume that you at least have the install CDs though. If you can't find them, then I would recommend using a Linux rescue OS installed on a USB drive.

  5. While I am still ticked that summer beer is gone I sure am glad to be drinking this again.

            1. if i had 30k+ followers which included lots of jumpy sportswriters and fans, i'd probably eff with them every now and then.

            1. the other option is he did mean it, saw the reaction he got, and quickly kicked dirt on his tracks.

              1. I'm leaning this way at this point. IN my experience nearly every outburst of this nature has at least some truth behind it.

  6. Oh, God... I missed my game log on Saturday. I swore to myself that I wouldn't miss one. Apologies to Bootsy for having to cover for me (though he summed up in about 5 words what would've taken me 100 to elaborate). Won't happen again... no matter how uninspiring the team is right now.
