  1. The Pharcyde? Awesome! 12 for the video, -2 for the video quality.

From the still image, I knew it had to be from Arsenio.

I wonder who the DJ is. It's not J-Swift.

As much as I've listened to their albums, I still have very little idea who's responsible for each verse. (Well, I guess I could figure them out if I tried.) I didn't realize that the "Dear-you-may-not-know-me-but-I-know-you-very-well..." singing was done by Fatlip. I kindof assumed that Tre did all the singing.

This album really knew how to hook me from the start of each song. This song starts with that Hendrix sample (that backwards guitar from "Are You Experienced?"). "Officer" starts with "I got a letter from the DMV / the other day / I opened and read it and said they were suckers..." like the start of Public Enemy's "Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos."

I had the privelege to see them in concert back in the day. They opened up for Cypress Hill (as did 311) at the Roy Rogers Auditorium. The friend I went with was a 311 fan. Neither of us wanted to see Cypress Hill that much at that time. (Must have been fall of 1995. 311 had been released, but not Labcabin nor Temples of Boom. B-Real had some beef with Ice Cube, whom I preferred, so I tried to get him pissed off at me. Sen Dog wasn't there, but there was a "Fake Sen Dog" who looked a lot like him and rapped his parts. But he didn't have Sen's style of rapping while sounding like he was trying to hold in his breath.

I was ticked off that there were no Pharcyde T-Shirts. I think that all they had was a baby blue sweatshirt with one of the Fire Hydrant and Dog drawings silk-screened on in yellow. Not something I could have ever worn, and not for whatever they were charging (I dunno, $40?). It wasn't even a hoodie, just a fleece sweatshirt.

Joe, you said "it's a shame these guys could never match the success of the bizarre ride II." Don't sleep on Labcabincalifornia: some great Dilla beats. The album's overlong and undervaried, but "Bull$#!+", "Runnin'", "She Said", "Drop", "Somethin' that Means Somethin'", "Y", and "Devil Music" are as good as anything on the first album. (And some of the remixes* on the singles are pretty great, too. Hell, the radio version of "Drop" uses a different vocal take that I like a bit more than the album version.)

*Some of the remixes. The "Runnin'" single comes with the "Jay Dee Extended Mix" and the "Smooth Extended Mix" and even after years of listening, I can't tell the difference from the album version. Do not confuse the first with the excellent "Jay Dee Remix" from the "Drop" single.

And Fatlip's "What's Up Fatlip?" single is pretty great. Check out Spike Jonze's the short documentary by the same name on his "Directors' Label" DVD compilation, too.

But then you said "`tis one of my favorite hip hop albums." and that's true here as well.

I own Plain Rap on CD, but I have never actually listened to it.

  2. all of this is duly noted, good sir. in all honesty, i never got labcabincalifornia on the (anti-)recommendation of a friend. thinking back, i never trusted his opinion all that much anyway. i should probably atone for this mistake.

  3. Funny, I just purchased a whole mess of Pharcyde songs last week...making a mix tape for the delivery room.

    1. So, what Pharcyde did you buy? Bizarre Ride, Labcabin, or something more recent?
Did Cornsilk like the music, or was it just for your headphones? Here's hoping that the Kernel didn't enter the world listening to the prank-call coda of "Better or 4 Worse". "Pack the Pipe" would be better.
