ALDS Decider: Tigers at Yankees

Doug Fister vs. Ivan Nova. If that's not a matchup to let your season ride on, what is?!

Captain Cheeseburger, apparently, may be available. Verlander apparently is not. This might be step one for the amazing, world-beating Yankee comeback that allows Girardi to change his uniform number again.

I know this is a bit early, but I have a feeling I'm going to forget otherwise, so here you go.

      1. i would, but i've got Pete by myself right now (one handed typing). no way i can guarantee any consistency from me.

          1. he'd probably do better than i have. i know he's already good at manipulation, at least.

  1. STATS_MLB STATS LLC
#Tigers' Young has 3 HRs in ALDS. He had none while going 5 for 24 with 6 Ks in his previous 6 playoff games, all vs. #Yankees #postseason

      1. How nice of him to finally figure it out when he plays for a different ALC team.

I have to keep reminding myself that I'm happy for Del. I really am, but SIGH

  2. I heard that Rivera has thrown three pitches in this series so far. It would be fab if that's how it ends.

      1. With the third pitcher already, if this thing goes extras perhaps we'll get to see what the Cap'n has in his arm.

  3. Sabathia warming up! I think we're going to see a minimum of seven pitchers from the Yankees today.

  4. As you would imagine, the Tigers radio broadcast of this game has some serious classic rock intros/outros from commercial break.

  5. The Detroit radio guys are now shocked that elm'n is getting pulled. They are wondering if there was an injury.

  6. I just had Great beer and an outstanding burger in L.A., and the yankmes are losing. W00t

      1. Out of 120, you had only never had four?
The one time I went to the Happy Gnome in St. Paul, I was having a hard time deciding between three different beers. Then someone told me I was just looking at page one of like eight. I perused a bit of those, and just picked one of the first three. Didn't want to spend an hour picking a beer (and didn't have time for more than one).

        1. Let's just say I have drunk a lot of beer over the years.
When I moved to dc after graduating from carleton, i, uh, spent a bit of time at the Brickskeller. I just progressed from there.

    1. Is that a commentary on what you are doing after four beers or the baseball game?

        1. Actually, we split 4 pints. Green Flash saison was awesome. Green Flash ipa I had had before. Excellent. Somebody's (i forget) Belgian-something mashup was hopalicious. Stone black ipa was Stone.

The burger had a layer of marrow and parmiggiano on it and was fantastic

          1. The place we went to when I was there had three draft options: Green Flash IPA, Pranqster, and Stella. I love the Pranqster, but I had to go with the IPA, which was a good choice.

  7. I've got a couple of these to get me through the night. Meh, the taste like every other Southerntier beer.

  8. With that Posada out, Del now has the best OPS in the series (among players with more than two ABs). (Stupid 2-2 Montero making me add a caveat.)

    1. Just looking through the box score, Martin and Tex are both batting around .170 in the series with OPSs in the .560s:
      Buteras with Power.

      (Actually, with Patience and Power).

  9. Well, either the Yankees are eliminated or Valverde will be the goat. I'm fine with either one.

    1. I have the Tiggers losing in the World Series. I'd like Valverde to be the goat in game 7 in the WS

    1. agreed. the tigres radio guys keep calling him papa grande. that makes me considerably more upset about having to support him...

      1. I said this joke before, but all I can think of with that name is the Ultramagnetic MC's song "Poppa Large"

Now he converts the save: Big Shot on the East Coast.

    2. This may be one of the few times I want him to convert the save.
I have too many bad October memories of late-inning decisive runs for the home team arising from that Borough.
In 2003, I didn't hate the BoSox yet, and count those, too.

  10. Had Robbie reached safely there, he could have pulled ahead of Del in the OPS race.
Rodriguez has a .390 OPS this series. Sub-Butera, barely above Steve Holm.

  11. I hate Valverde as much as the next guy, but the playoffs did suddenly get immensly more likeable.

    Suck it, Jeter.

    1. i disagree. i definitely have more of a "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" kind of thing going on...

  12. An astonishingly efficient save for Valverde.

Memo to the Yankees: Let the inquisition begin!

    1. Sabathia only pitched 8.2 innings over a 5-game series.
I blame whoever thought it would be a good idea to build a modern baseball stadium in New York without putting a roof on it.

    1. That was one of the ways in which he was a true Twin: the boring interviews in which no personality is revealed. Like Mauer, Kubel, Nathan, and... (there were others, weren't there? I can't think of anyone else)

        1. Nice to see I am not the only person who has both (the same) Joe Posnanski sites saved on my main page.

    1. It'll be good for the cash-strapped New York club to not have to order new manager jerseys.

  13. I watched the clip on mlb.com of Valverde striking out Rodriguez. Sounds like a home team announcers trying to appear unbiased. "Yankees only able to string two runs together..." "Yankees couldn't take the lead..." "I know it's not the outcome the New York fans wanted..."
Like when Bert calls Fox Saturday games.

    1. MLB.com does that too. Everything is about the Yankees trying to do things. The position or desire to win of their opponents, who are never mentioned, is never mentioned.

    1. Huh, but the Yanquis' AVGs and OPSs looked so low compared to the Tigs'.
Yanquis worst batter: Rodriguez, batting 4th.
Tigers worst batter: Avila, batting 8th.

      1. My rough calc:
        Tigers: .228/.311/.380/.690
        Yanquis: .260/.350/.399/.749
The only place I really see a Tigers' advantage is in Isolated power: .152 vs .139, including .235 vs .108 in game 5.
