  1. I'm back. Thanks for the congratulations and good wishes. I'll get caught up on fall and winter ball reports as time permits.

For anyone interested, I thought I'd let you know what the rest of the ordination process entails. It's all pretty much a formality from here.

In March I have to go to a training session, and in May I will attend a retreat with the bishop. Neither of these has any sort of testing component to them. I hope to learn something, but technically all I have to do is show up. Then, at annual conference in June, the clergy of the Dakotas Conference will take a final vote of approval. Theoretically, they could vote to disapprove, but it's a very rare thing because, of course, the point of the rest of the process has been to determine one's fitness for ordination. A person would have to do something pretty colossally stupid to blow it at this point.

The ordination will be June 8 in Sioux Falls at one of the larger United Methodist churches there. I assume it will be at First United Methodist, but I haven't seen anything definite yet. bhiggum indicated he might be interested in attending, so I'll let you know when I find out for sure.

As I indicated before, I wasn't terribly worried, but it's really nice to have it out of the way. Now, to get ready for the Harvest Festival, Charge Conference and the Advent/Christmas season.

  2. At this point of the year, when the baseball season ends and we enter the long, dark tea-time of the soul, I always remember a story Bill James told about Luke Appling. What follows is a paraphrase, but I think it's pretty close:

"Near the end of his career, Appling was asked what his saddest day in baseball was. He said he had one every year. It was the last day of the season, when he knew there wouldn't be a game tomorrow."

So, they don't know about us yet?

    1. I watched game six with a big Cubs fan. He was strongly rooting against St. Louis, and took it pretty hard when the Cardinals came back and won.

  4. Jesus, first Chelsea loses to QPR last week and now 3-5 against Arsenal this week? Looks like the Blues are well primed for their November swoon.

    1. They could afford the odd loss if Man City wasn't so ridiculous, but Man City is ridiculous.

I watched that QPR loss...a couple of red cards, and I knew where it was headed, but I watched anyway. Ugh.

      1. We were at a pretty cool expats pub for the Manchester Derby and Chelsea-QPR derby last week. They were nutso games. I didn't get to see any of the games this weekend.

  5. In the lair of the Pale Hose - picked a good time to blow H-town (4-8 inches 4-cast for tonite... zoinks, Scoob).

NBBW and I ran UNO 5K Carrera de los Muertes this morning in Pilsen. A well-run, well-attended (est. 3,000 runners) event - many costumed runners, music along the route, and authentic Mex. cuisine at the end (we had menudo, arroz con frijoles, tortillas) - proceeds going to raise money for their school.

  6. since I know some of you are welcoming winter, I thought I'd share this with you all. Just picked this morning.

  7. I stopped by my local beer store today to see if any winter offerings have started to make their way onto the shelves. Much to my amazement I found 2010 Anchor Steam Christmas! I bought the three 6 packs they had in the store.

  8. Someone get a copy of this article to the Twins trainers before they operate on Kyle Gibson. Wait, that has already happened? Crap. How about Scott Baker?

    1. Sounds like the Twins had the right idea with trying rehabbing first before going to surgery, then.

  9. #3 NDSU 27, #2 Northern Iowa 19. #1 Georgia Southern lost today, too. I would expect that NDSU will be #1 in FCS.

In High School football, #2 SBGVille 66, #1 Cavalier 42. Defending state champion SBGVille moves to the final four.

  10. I thought I hated the Badgers...turns out, I dislike "THE" Ohio State even more. I was disappointed that Wisconsin lost tonight.

  11. Gophers with the big win against Iowa. I can't remember the last time they had consecutive wins against one of their rivals. It's been awhile.

    1. probably 19999-2000, its the last time they had 2 straight wins over Iowa (they actually had a 3 game streak at that time)
