FMD: Dec 2, 2011

1. End-of-the-year is coming. Start planning your best-of lists. Let's try to discuss on the first Friday of the new year (rather than earlier). That will be January 6, 2012.

2. Now that I've got some of my actuarial-education blinders off for a bit, I notice that a new artist I'm listening to has a show in Minneapolis tonight. Her name is Lydia Loveless, and she plays vulgarly fun country-punk about drinking and cheaters and depression. For fans of the Waco Brothers and Miranda Lambert. Here's a live clip of what's probably my favorite song (Lyrics NSFW). She's playing at Lee's Liquor Lounge, doors at 9pm, $8 cover. If I hadn't been blindered and completely ignoring my wife and kids, I would definitely go, but my EAR seems to have been missing me, so I may favor staying home. But if you're looking for something to do tonight, consider this my recommendation.

3. I would have preferred to link first to her Daytrotter Session, which was uploaded on my birthday this year. Unfortunately, those files are no longer free as Daytrotter has had to implement a $2/month subscription fee to keep their lights on. It's definitely worth it for me, so they'll have my credit card number soon. I will miss having that site's performances as a quick way for me to link to artists I like. You can have a free seven-day trial.

4. Lydia's session is particularly good, which does have me excited about her as a live artist. Mostly songs from her first album, but recorded with more life. The session may end up on my best-of list.

5. Finally, a new track from Lana Del Ray (visuals borderline NSFW: sideboob). Just saw this, haven't listened closely. Yet.

6. Time for you to share your randomness.

** I see Trent Reznor is doing the soundtrack for David Fincher's latest (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo that I just started reading, hoping to finish before the movie releases). Given how well that combo worked in The Social Network, I have high hopes.

*** The rare Nirvana song I only have one version of. Having picked and chosen from the 20th anniversary Nevermind release, I am only one version away from having a random 10 completely composed of different recordings of 'Polly'.

    1. Polly - Nirvana - Nevermind
    2. (New Wave) Polly - Nirvana - Incesticide
    3. Polly - Nirvana - Unplugged in NY

    9. Polly - Nirvana - Live at the Paramount: Nevermind [Super-Deluxe]
    10. I suppose I could put the Butch Vig mix here, but I wasn't really interested in that, so it got deleted.

  2. Hey AMR, shoot me a text if you go to Lydia Loveless, I could be talked into going.

** Wonderfully Weird song from Beck Hansen

    1. About 5 minutes ago, "Disarm" played on my Pandora station based on "Your Woman" of WGOM fame. Also, I really enjoyed "Live Forever" but to my recollection, there wasn't much else on that album. Did I miss something I should go back & check out?

      1. Definitely Maybe is one of my top 5 favorite CDs, but I'm the resident Oasis fanatic, so my perception could be off.

Great songs off that CD include:

        Rock'n'Roll Star
        Live Forever
        Columbia
        Supersonic
        Cigarettes and Alcohol
        Slide Away

          1. I like it - to a certain extent. A lot of the songs sound like the songs post-Be Here Now where Noel would sing. Since those were usually my favorite on the last couple of albums, that's not a bad thing at all (better than Beady Eye, anyway. I wasn't able to get into that one.), but they were so much a better band on their first two.

            1. Just listened to the whole thing. I liked it too. I also read a couple of Noel interviews with RS...he sure likes the F-word.

    1. In the past, I never liked current popular artists doing Christmas standbys. Think Michael Buble, Justin Bieber, Jessica Simpson, Christina Aguilera, etc.* I liked the classics by people like Bing, Johnny Mathis, Judy Garland, Burl Ives and Andy Williams. Then I realized that at one time, the "classics" were current popular artists doing their holiday thing. To hear something like "Just Like Christmas" by a band that I really respect and enjoy, well it makes me happy. Thanks for the list boots.

*I still don't like 'em, Christmas or otherwise.

        1. list Sorry, download. I did that...listening to it prompted the comment!

      1. I hadn't heard the song in a while, but Pimp C's verse on this song is one of my favorite verses he ever did.

I suppose it's fitting he showed up here twice since he died 4 years ago Sunday. πŸ™

  8. so, I am listening to The Current and the song 'Second Chance' by Peter Bjorn and John comes up. Firstly, that song is kind of cool. Secondly, that song is used by the show 'Two Broke Girls' (Im not a fan of the show, but do watch it when nothing else is on) and the guitar slams are used for segues. Weird. I thought the show was using some generic music bed. I might have to check out some more stuff by Peter Bjorn and John

  9. so I'm listening to a hip hop song today, and I hear "We're going to town to f*** the hose." It took me a few minutes to stop being confused.

    *Notes:
    5. Can't find my CD of the album, Ma Fleur. I know there were like four or five subtly different versions from country to country and format to format**, so I'm reluctant to just download the album, because I want my iVersion to be the same as my CD version.

**I hate that. Go ahead and make bonus tracks all you want, but my completist tendency that I can rarely suppress requests each version at least digitally, even if it's a slightly longer intro, or a quicker fadeout, or the tracks are mixed into each other in one version and not on the other. I thought that getting the Plastikman box set would help me with that , but scouring the discography included in the thing, I noticed like four tracks not included. And then investigating them, I noticed a few more discrepancies.

    T. The finest Dutch dub, my favorite dub album by miles. Twilight Circus is Ryan Moore, formerly of the Legendary Pink Dots (to whom I've never listened). He left the band to focus on Reggae, first with his dub, and then later with actual Jamaican dancehall vocalists. He came to 7th Street earlier this year, opening for my second-favorite dub artist, Mad Professor. I learned of this the day of the concert and could not make arrangements to attend.

    B. I gotta go, I'll post my thoughts on Poe on the Video's page tonight.
