Grammy-award nominee from the time he was five, from his duet with his father on Shel-Silverstein-penned "Daddy What If?"
Good stuff. I'm a BBJ fan (moreso than BB), I've got most of his albums. BBJ is a bit from the latter-day Meat Puppets school, where working too long on something seems to suck his passion and enjoyment, probably from being burned working with a major label, so he doesn't take too long on anything. The album this song is from, The Longest Meow was recorded in eleven hours. Some songs on each are kindof filler, while other ones are damned-near perfect, including any other Silverstein song he's ever done.
I saw him at the Bloodshot Beer-B-Q at the Cedar back in 2009 (with HHT, Waco Bros, Bottle Rockets, Deadstring Bros, and a free lunch). His live set seemed ramshackle: good songs and performances balanced by a seemingly drunken bewilderment of what to do when not playing songs, or what song to play next. Maybe it was just an off night for him, but various youtube clips showed a similar demeanor. And I still wanted to see him again because his songs are so good. But both times since then that he's been back in town, I've had other things I couldn't avoid.
You can download the album version of this song free from Bloodshot. Also check the (even better) song "Borrow Your Cape". The downloads from Bloodshot were actually my gateway. Each of his albums has one or two mp3s for sample. If you're like me, you'll be hooked.
Bloodshot doesn't have free mp3s for "Flat Chested Girl from Maynardville" or "Visit Me in Music City". You'll need those. BBJ seems more stage-aware on that last clip than when I saw him.
Also, his late-90s major-label band, Bare Jr, had a minor hit (I think) with "You Blew Me Off", and there are some good songs under that name, too.
