Amanda Shires belting out the Barbara Keith classic from 1973. As always, thanks to jobu and the gang for having me. I always enjoy it. If you ever pack and and go to Buffalo, just let me know.
Weakerthans frontman John K. Sampson has continued to put out incredible work touching on many of same themes as the Manitoba based indie rockers did in the 90s and 2000s. New materiel from him doesn't come out often but is always a treat when it does
Not my favorite song from the album but probably my favorite album of the year so far. You may know Nina Perrson from the Cardigans, Soundtrack of Our Lives, A Camp, or being indie Tammy Wynette. She is one of my favorite singers and unsurprisingly she offers some wonderful harmonies here.
Making their WGOM debut, I think, meet Ringo Deathstar. Gimmicky names aside feels like what would have happened if My Bloody Valentine listed to pop punk records growing up. I think that is a compliment.
Being funny when writing a song is really hard. Times and tastes change and sometimes a joke isn't funny the 30th time you have heard it.
My two favorite songwriters who are consistently funny are John Prine and the Fountains of Wayne team of Adam Schlesinger and Chris Collingwood.
Adam passed on pretty early on in 2020 from Covid, much like Prine. This recording was from a tribute done in 2021. There is a certain weight to the performance given the reason for the show but I love the way Buchannan belts this out. Great tune, great performance.
Making her first WGOM appearance since 2018, Nikki Lane.
Kinda dig this tune.
When I was younger I was always talking to the older guys to get turned onto music I hadn't heard before. Sometimes the suggestions spoke to me, sometimes they didn't. I don't know if that you just cant understand bands like My Bloody Valentine, Stereolab, or Spiritualized when you are 23 or if I just didn't yet know how to appreciate the subtle melodies. Either way, sorry it took me so long Snackboy and Coach. Those bands all rule. Spiritualized is still putting out great stuff to this day as shown below.
