I've stayed up until 1am (at least) reading TV Tropes. AMR, did you suggest that? I'm simply lost there.

My schedule for the day includes a funeral at 1:00 and a wedding at 5:00. I'll do my best not to get them confused.
Nice that they're in that order, so you can close out your day on a high note.
I get what you're saying, but as I think about it, I'm not sure it's true. For one thing, I find a lot of satisfaction in being there for people at a time like a funeral. For another, people tend to be a lot more particular about everything being just absolutely perfect at a wedding.
And I get what you're saying. I guess it certainly depends on the funeral. Participating in the celebration of a beloved matriarch/patriarch for instance can be rewarding, too.
btw, I enjoy listening to your sermons. While our church does stream live, they do not have them archived for later listening.
Thank you. It's always nice to know someone's watching.
technically I'm not watching; I like to listen in the background while I work 😉
so, the Padre's voice is like streamingsoundtracks???
in a way, yes, you could say that!
Congratulations to Ben Revere for winning this year's GIBBY Play of the Year. Special thanks to Dick for the call.
Watched the interview. He said his own Dad was a huge Willie Mays fan and told him his catch was better, and one of the presenters told him some think it's the best play ever. Revere had a nice combination of being humble without deflecting praise. I hate it when people go over the top with that. Say thank you, even maybe acknowledge you did something cool. It can be done without being arrogant. Good job Ben.
For sure. False modesty is more tedious than typical arrogance, and just as easy to see.
I'm not sure this strictly applies, but the twitter feed "humblebrag" is hilarious. It gathers humble-sounding brags primarily from celebrities, but also from non-celebs if they're egregious enough.
The best to date is from LeVar Burton, who posted a photo with the caption "Beautiful night for sitting by the fireplace!" The photo does feature the fireplace, but much more prominent are the eight(?) Emmy awards sitting on the mantel.
What were the fireplaces like when you were young?
They went on forever. They... When I, we lived in Arizona, and the fireplaces had little glowing coals in them and uh. They were warm and bright and there were lots of sparks at night. And when it would rain, it would all turn... They were beautiful, the most beautiful fireplaces as a matter of fact. The embers were purple and red and yellow and on fire and the screens would catch the colors everywhere. That's unique because I used to look at them all the time when I was little. You don't see that. You might still see that in the desert.
Okay, so the caption was "It's a good night for natural light in LA." I knew I was paraphrasing but that the spirit was the same.
It also appears to be eleven Emmys, unless those below are Emmys at a different angle, in which case he has fifteen>!!>!
according to IMDb, he has 10 Emmys, 5 Image Awards, and one award the Chicago International Children's Film Festival
that center trophy looks a lot like a Fielding Grammy as well
NBATV to air three of four preseason game today. The only one missing, Bucks @ Wolves.
I'll say it for everyone else: Of course.
but, the game is on the FSN 'alternate' channel, so maybe it will pop on the web somewhere
This is my fifth straight day of waking up with a headache and congestion so powerful I'm a mouthbreather, and something like the tenth day of the last twenty-one that I've been sick or something like it. My immune system is dead, dudes. Luckily, all I have to do today is head with my mom, wife and kids to the zoo for a few hours and then drive my mom over to the other side of Phoenix so she can attend the funeral of an aunt while I kill two hours doing nothing much. Sigh.
As a side note, it's quite the coincidence my mom is able to do this. It's the second trip she's ever made to Arizona, and now she can be there for the funeral of one of the only six people she knows here.
I'd be curious to see if things get worse for you after being outdoors today. You should find a local allergist's website and see if they post allergy alert levels are for the past few days; maybe you can see a trend that matches your symptoms. I know my brother there has some desert-related allergies, and you've had some rain there, right? Could be something seasonal going on, and being new to the area, they can knock you pretty squarely.
Think about hitting the Benedryl before bed at night.
We had a lot of rain for about 24 hours, and that was a couple of days after this started. The whole changes-in-weather thing might apply, though, as the temperature's been all over the place.
I do think this particular bout is unrelated to the earlier sickness, which is annoying. I woke up with it four mornings ago, and my first thought was "Oh, eff you, immune system." Normally I'm disappointed to wake up sick, but this time I was angry.
I have a hypo-allergenic pillow case I take on business trips; I ALWAYS wake up congested. Not to the point of headaches, unless a sinus infection flares up. You've got my sympathies.
I've got one NYtimes article left for the month. I blame you and Nate Silver equally.
Yeah, you can kiss that site goodbye. I hit my 20th (and last). Sayonara.
empty your cache and try again. or try from a different browser.
But Chrome is so much better than the others, I don't want to go back to IE, and EAR has firefox.
hey, everyone. just a reminder, the Hand And Ball Guys Fantasy Basketball draft is tonight at 9pm CT. we could definitely use a few more teams, so click on the link if you want to join. see you there.
Eh, my fantasy football is almost over and I need some way to kill time at work. May as well give it a try!
the last few years, I have been very optimistic about the Wolves, only to have that optimism broken by game 10. I dont think I am going to change. I am thinking the Wolves go on a Wild like tear early in the year and hang on tough but finish 9th or 10th in the conference. The condensed schedule might favor them since they have a lot of young talent...25-31 record or something along those lines
Maybe we can have game logs for more than two weeks this season.
They will lose fewer games than last year. You have that to look forward to.
A few quick tips on how to act when you are locked into a pub after closing in Northern Ireland.
1. When the drunken man next to you offers to buy you a beer you should accept.
2. Offer to buy the next round.
3. When asked what brand of religion you are the correct answers are: Jewish or atheist. The jewish line is an old joke around these parts so when you dispense this line be prepared to have the question asked again. The correct answer the second time is atheist.
4. Finish pint of beer quickly, but not in obvious hurry, while putting on your jacket.
5. Get barman to open the door.
6. ???
7. Profit.
Thanks for this. I've always wondered what to do in that particular situation and now I know.
TV Tropes will ruin/enhance your life.
Truly. I don't know if I suggested it. I think I've warned against it. Late-night hours disappear and then all-a-sudden you realize it hardly pays to lay down for the night, seeing as you've got to wake up in less than an hour.
Thank you spooky and nibs for not adding a link.
What's interesting to me about it is that I'm aware of everything I'm reading already, but it's presented in such a comical, level-headed way that I just get wrapped up in the fun. I started with video games, and it spiraled into everything.
It's the worst...there are so many interesting links on every page, that you click forward about ten times, but the second you go back, there's something else you remembered you wanted to see. Pure addiction.
I can't tell you who, but I can tell you when you were introduced to that site.
The wiki-walk quotient for that site is about ten times worse for me than wikipedia itself. I can start with a random video game, and before long, there are 20 tabs open. Certainly not a site to peruse if you don't have hours to waste.
And a shout out to our man in Amsterdam Chicago: Goose Island IPA was buy 2 get one free at Tesco today- I just couldn't resist the taste of (near) home. (Funny, it was cheaper here than it is back home..............)
i told them to hook you up.
I just wanted the first episode of Homeland. Yeah, I think I will end up watching a few of these today.
err, watched
Yeah, I really enjoy it. I know there are some issues some have with the underlying philosophy of it all and believability
it is hard to imagine Carrie got as far as she did hiding her true condition the whole way
but it's entertaining and I think the performances by Danes, Lewis, and even Mandy Patinkin are fascinating.
"Even" Mandy Patinkin? I can't think of many actors more critically loved than he. He's adored to an almost annoying extent by actors, including myself.
Obviously, I can't speak to what actors think about anyone in general, and I actually haven't made a habit of following most of the work he's done in his career other than the movie Dread Pirate's avatar is from, but a lot of the critical work I've read about this show, when referring to Patinkin's performance, has the tone of pleasant surprise that he's not chewing scenery, as if that's what he mostly does otherwise.
His performance in this show is great, as good as Danes or Lewis, in my opinion (which, again, is certainly no acting expert's opinion).
This.
He is great in Homeland. (Though I, too, have found him to be a scene chewer/ham in the past, on occasion.)
I can grant the scene-chewer tag, yes.
He comes from a successful stage career, and on stage you have to be so much larger to get your point across. He just never pulled back much for film (although his caustic but subtle performance in "Dead Like Me" is a big exception).
His turn in Elmo in Grouchland is legendary.
I was up awfully late, too, because we hosted our annual holiday party (Mr. and Mrs. Can of Corn were able to come by!) and the party died down at about 10:30 only to have both my brothers and few people show up at 1100 and stay until after two. Sheenie and I are apparently getting old.
Right. I forgot to send you my regrets.
Netiquette clarification: is it necessary to send regrets to FB invites?
If regrets are expected (and I really do not think they are), then there's about 100 people who botched etiquette yesterday.
BOSTON (AP)—Boston Celtics forward Jeff Green will have surgery to repair an aortic aneurysm and will miss the entire season, the team announced on Saturday as it traveled to Toronto for its exhibition opener against the Raptors.
Green is scheduled for an operation on Monday at the Cleveland Clinic. Doctors have told him the operation “should completely repair Green’s condition and that he can expect to resume his NBA career next season,” the Celtics said in a news release.
Every now and then you hear a story like this. Wish it had worked that way for Pistol Pete's life.
Scary. As much as I despise his college, I always enjoyed watching Jeff Green play because he was such a talented worker and had such broad skills. I remember watching him in the DC summer league and just marveling over his court presence. (Of course, I also loved that same league for letting me mock Roy Hibbert* for being a giant, slow oaf.)
*Parks & Rec almost redeemed Hibbert for me except I still can't forget how all the GTown fans treated him like a 7 year-old girl as he sleepwalked through games and they kept saying, "It's ok, Roy."
the Wild are down a goal and being outshot. Right where we want them
I've been uninspired by their play so far
yeah. 9 (?) shots on goal and it seems like not a lot of possession time. Missing PMB and Koivu is probably really hurting the offense
lots of turnovers as well
Lost the first half to Frosty and Frosty Returns. Picking Gillies for the tying goal and Brodziak for the winner.
I'll take Clutterbuck
Nice call.
especially since he scored at 9:02
I know. I'm sticking with Kyle, whether ot or so.
CAL!!!!!!!!!!!!
can we sub Hackett for the shooutout?
bah
Shootouts are dumb.
Keb' Lub' look tight.
We will need more than two weeks of gamelogs, Hitman. The Pups are gonna be fun to watch. And let me go record as saying the JJ signing is gonna be huge. Especially this year.
I am a JJ Barea fan, as noted before. Dude has jets.
He might be a liability on D, but he is an absolute offensive dynamo. He was a huge part of that Mav Championship season.
This confused me for a bit, but I believe you are talking about the Wolves, amirite?
Keb' Lub' look good.
(Sorry. Trying out a new nick for the newly svelte All-Star forward for the local NBA franchise.)
I'm a fan. I got it right away, but I'm practically in lub with the guy myself, so that's no surprise.
Rubio with 7 assists and only 1 turnover. Better ratio than we were led to believe.
That was a fun game. Rubio looked better than I thought he would, Keb' Lub' can freaking shoot, D-Thrill had his moments, and they looked like a well-coached team! The Rubio-to-Williams oop was awesome, especially since the ball flew through the net and drilled a Bucks player in the face.
I don't want to believe too much, it was just one preseason game. But damn, I'm excited to get the season started.
The Twins are considering Jeff Francis and Joel Pineiro, reports Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (on Twitter). Morosi says Jon Garland is an option as well if he checks out medically after missing most of last season due to shoulder surgery.
My schedule for the day includes a funeral at 1:00 and a wedding at 5:00. I'll do my best not to get them confused.
