Loves me some Big "O"! I bought this concert on VHS when it first came out, I think it's still floating around in the basement somewhere. I always thought it was a shame that Roy died right after he started his comeback and was finally receiving some the recognition he deserved.
Yeah, it'd've been great to hear what he could have done with the "Rick Rubin's Livingroom" treatment that Johnny Cash got.
I was under the impression comedy week was going to continue into week 2. Not that I mind, this song was pretty good.
Comedy week, to my knowledge, has been postponed until fundraising has been completed. It is just like a pledge drive to ruin something some people were enjoying.
Pledge Week is all about the star grab.
I assumed that's what it was.
I have been a fan of Roy since I was a Boy. When we bought a minivan, a Ford Aerostar, it had a tape deck. Dad (THR) had a bunch of LPs that he re-recorded to tapes to listen to while driving. Our setup at home didn't have a tape deck, so he and I went over to his parents' house. The first day, he put the following on tape:
Cat Stevens Teaser and the Firecat
Simon and Garfunkel Bookends (minus "Voices of Old People")
Gene Pitney 's Big Sixteen
Jimi Hendrix Smash Hits
The Moody Blues To Our Children's Children's Children and
Roy Orbison The Very Best of
Later that afternoon, in our brand-new minivan, THR decided to sit in the middle of the back bench seat, with each arm outstretched on the top of the bench while Mom (JKR) drove to the grocery store. I have an incredibly vivid memory of THR singing along with Roy to "Blue Angel", using a falsetto and everything, despite the fact that THR never sings (not even in church, he just stands there silent).
I later got the "Mystery Girl" cassette from BMG and taped a bigger Roy collection from the NU library's double-LP, For the Lonely: A Roy Orbison Anthology. And then Roy died.
My favorite songs are "It's Over", and "Running Scared". My least favorites are the ones he didn't write, with the exception of "Pretty Paper", I thought the persona he had in his self-written songs, of secret longing, imagining futures that won't come with the girl of his dreams, is so wonderful and consistent, and well-paired with his voice, that it's incredibly jarring to switch to "Mean Woman Blues".
