      1. "Turn the Season" is a great tune, too. Other than those two I am not nuts about the album.

  4. I know all the cool kids like The Shins but I've never been able to stomach them. I tried to get into Wincing the Night Away a couple of times and it takes all my efforts to stifle a big yawn. I thought I'd try again as NPR has been hyping a live concert available only through their Ipad app. I dutifully watched around 15 minutes and had to turn it off for fear of falling asleep. So I tried Shins fans I really did. Don't hate on me, I'm just not as cool as you guys.

Bonus: Kiss Me on The Bus -- The Replacements

    1. I think you've got it right free, the Shins are no Walkmen. That is for sure.

      1. Nice, you really know how to hit a guy. Besides the Walkman and Shins, other bands that just don't do it for me:

        Band of Horses
Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah
        New Pornographers
Vampire Weekend (or is is Vampire Hands or is it both?)

Sorry if I offended anyone's sensitive musical tastes.

        1. I enjoy the Shins, but for the most part I don't think they're anything special.

Band of Horses is pretty one-note, but sometime that note is perfect ("Nobody's Gonna Love You" is a great song, especially if you think about it from a parent/child perspective).
Clap and Vampire, I'm right there with you. I'd put New Pornographers in the same batch as the Shins. But Neko Case individually is awesome.

        2. Don't worry, I think me and my apathy towards The Hold Steady overshadows anyone else's ability to offending anyones musical tastes around here.

    2. I never listened to Wincing the Night Away or anything that came out after it (has anything?) since around the time it came out the keyboardist in the band beat the crap out of his girlfriend, and I just couldn't bring myself to listen to their new stuff. Their first two albums are fairly solid, but I think there are tons of better power pop bands around.

    1. I would suggest all citizens buy this album. It might take a couple of spins but there are some great tunes on this disc.

      1. My first couple of listens weren't that great, but after seeing him perform the tracks live it really, really grew on me. Wish "The Dude From St. Paul" was on there, though.

        1. So I got tracks 6, 7, 9, and 10 and there's no .amz file on my computer to restart the download.

sean, do you have any experience with the Amazon downloader extension in Banshee?

          1. I contacted Amazon, and within 10 minutes I am re-downloading my missing tracks. Thanks to Amazon and specifically Pavan R. (if you somehow Google yourself and end up reading this) for the good customer service.

      1. My current favorite line is, "By the way you picked up the phone I could tell you weren't gunna die, February is about as long as it's wide", but, "people say we suck at sports, but they don't understand, it's hard to catch with holes right through your hands" is quickly gaining.

Looks like a Techno day: 5 of 11.
That Taylor Swift song really mars my cred, but it's such a perfect teen-pop tune. Tommy Roe wishes he could have written them like that.

    1. She writes some really catchy tunes. And then I saw her on 60 Minutes and decided she was probably a good role model too. I'm hoping her taste in production values... evolves. Before my daughter's inevitable fandom.

      1. The entire inventory team at work listens to nothing but the local country station every morning, and honestly, I look forward to anything of hers, because it's about all I can stand (it's "today's" country, and the only stuff that goes before about 2005 is the occasional Garth Brooks tune).

          1. Sheenie loves both country and rap, so I tease her every single time we watch Justified because she can't help but nod her head along with the theme. On the other hand, she loves to scream the lyrics to the ridiculously inane songs at Target Field to "sing along with TC" just because she knows I find it awful.

          2. Faith Hill was my first real experience of country = bad pop, back in 1995. I'm really ignorant as to what was happening from say, 1985-1994 (other than the Judds had some hits that almost crossed over), but with Faith Hill I realized there was little substantial difference between her and, say, Mariah Carey (although without the runs).

            1. The thing is though, at about the same time that Faith Hill and Shania Twain, et. al., were turning country into pop, there were also really good country acts doing their thing. I feel like mid-90's country was a high point for the genre, but you could definitely see the beginnings of bad pop-country developing too.

  10. Shoot. Not at home, didn't plan ahead, haven't set up a Pandora station.

Uh... here are the CD's I currently have in my office:

Canadian Brass Best of Canadian Brass
The Shins Wincing The Night Away
    James Taylor Greatest Hits
    They Might Be Giants Flood
    Jack Johnson In Between Dreams
Oasis (What's The Story) Morning Glory?
    Chumbawumba Tubthumping
Bruce Springsteen Born In The U.S.A.

Yeah... I'm not normally a "best of" guy. I don't think the Canadian Brass one counts against me on that angle though. This probably isn't the greatest representation for me, especially not for my first one, but it's not terrible either. Sigh.

    1. Also, yes, I said CDs.

Had a conversation the other day that went like this:
Her: "You have a CD player?"
      Me: "Yeah..."
Her: "That's ok, I have a record player. Of course, that just means I'm a hipster, since it's so uncool. Hahahaha."
Me: "Record player? Hah! I'm so hipster I've got a CD player."

  11. This list is very rap-heavy, even for me.

    1. pfft. like you've ever gotten me to like to any female singer/songwriters before.

anyway, i'll reserve judgment for now until i get a few more listens in.

      1. Didn't listen to this all the way through before posting it. The backing vocals kinda suck on this clip--the album version featuring Zach Condon from the band Beruit is far superior.

      1. Note to self, don't ever shout out joke song requests.

I actually think it's kinda funny that he took that idiot to task. Good on ya, Bradford.

        1. I once got into it with a guy at a Kevin Drew (solo show by dude from Broken Social Scene) show when he was screaming Free Bird. I told him to shut the hell up or I would take him outside and show him what it was like. He didn't get my Seinfeld reference and dumped a beer on me
