May 9, 2012: The Rug

Well, it was pulled out from under us. The Milkmaid's promotion is dead, and it's all so infuriating I won't get into it here. Still, we have options. They're not as good as the one we were promised, but we're hopeful.

  1. Ugh, that stinks mr. spoons. Two years from now when Apocrypha has you holding out for a better contract, you'll look back and laugh.

  2. Don't look now, but Ryan Doumit is tied for second on the team in HRs and leads the team in RBIs. He and Wheeling Ham have combined for nine HRs and the rest of the team has eight.

  3. I don't know what's funnier, Brandon Inge hitting a home run or that it hits a guy in the nuts and then a woman in the face:

    1. I hope he either had his eyes closed or was getting up to get a drink when someone shouted "DUDE LOOK OUT!", because if he was trying to catch that, Delmon couldn't have done worse.

      1. The wider angle shows the ball first deflects off of another would-be catcher's hand before striking the second gentlemen in his bits

  4. Sorry to hear it Spooky. I don't know employment law or anything, but if there really was some age-related issue to the denial I'd suggest looking into the legal implications further.

    1. There are easy loopholes for corporate to exploit, unfortunately. Without getting into it, it's essentially a dead issue.

  5. Ahh, spooky that sucks, I'm sorry. I've had a couple of seemingly guaranteed job offers yanked from my grasp at the last second, and it's difficult not to be bitter. One of them is actually being dangled in front of me again, and I'm just waiting for it to fall through once more.

  6. Ugh. Sorry to hear that news, Spooky. Hope things work out for you all. It's been my experience that they generally do, but with regular setbacks to keep us agile.

  7. Something in the water, or phase of the moon, must be off. We had a scare in selling our house last week, got over that, and then was completely blindsided when a massive proposal that was a "lock" was rejected this morning. I'm more than a little pissed off with the folks who led me to believe I was their selection, and this has left a huge hole in my schedule + a loss of any income this year. Oh, well. Balls to you daddy, I ain't never coming back.

Now I have to get back on my roof and locate the leak over the covered patio. It's only supposed to be in the high 80˚s today, which I suppose is a blessing.

  8. cc to Rhu_Ru:
Saw your shoutout from Monday's game log last night about the big brother. You may have noticed that I don't speak up much on the football/concussion discussions here. I've sort of recused myself from those debates.

    1. Twayn -- out of curiosity and not a desire to start a flame war or anything -- how come?

      1. My brother works for a major manufacturer of football (and other sporting) equipment.

  9. On other employment news, brotherS is hitting the pavement in the Twin Cities, looking for a QA position. After 16+ years with his current employer, he recently accepted a severance package to move on.

Anybody know anyone looking for an experienced C programmer with lots of HP LoadRunner script-writing experience and/or extensive experience porting C/PowerBuilder code to Java? (on the latter, my brother basically made himself obsolete by porting all the C code that he'd originally written into Java)

(if I got any of the technical details wrong on the description, blame me, not brotherS; I'm just cribbing from a description he sent my way last year about what he does)

    1. Send me his resume. No guarantees, but we have a few positions open where he might fit.

Edit: I should add that he would likely never touch Java again were he hired. If he's fine working in C and (very probably) learning Fortran, then that would be good.

      1. Introductory email sent. Thanks.

I suspect that he could pick Fortran back up if needed. He had a career at Sperry, then Unisys, prior to working for his most recent employer. He's not a 25-year old code jockey, but I'm pretty sure he can drink as much Mountain Dew as is required by a job.

    2. I'd be happy to pass his resume on to HR here if you want to send it to me. Message me on the BOF and I'll send you my work email address. Currently, I see one opening for a software engineer but they're always looking for talent...

  10. Thanks, everyone. As always, this community makes hard news easier to take.

The Milkmaid's now working on a career path that will be more of a slow burn, but unlike this promotion she was initially promised, will actually end up with her doing a job she'd love, and not a job that purely fulfilled her from a monetary standpoint (I know how that sounds, but we're looking for the positive here).

We actually may end up in Minnesota now, which would really soften the blow.

    1. I can think of several times in my life when I was very disappointed when I did not get what I wanted, only to later get something even better. I know that's easy to say when you're not in the middle of something, but things do work out that way sometimes.

      1. I have had similar experiences. One of them is still paying dividends (the one where I met Mrs. Twayn).

      2. All I can say about that is that I was once engaged to be married, it fell apart, and I was devastated. I felt like I would be alone forever and would die in the small town where I lived, forgotten by the world. Eventually, I quit my job, went to law school, met my wife, got married, and we had our beautiful little girl. If you would have told me when the engagement fell apart that this was one of the best things that would ever happen to me, I wouldn't have believed it. But, it was.

It's hard to see the rainbow through glasses dark as these.

  11. Colin Stetson plays a free concert in the Perlman Gallery at the Walker Art Center tomorrow night.

    1. I'm trying to imagine some way that I can bring HPR (he's a fan).
(Plus, how cool would that be for a first concert?)
Website says "Arrive Early": I'm probably screwed.

  12. Not much change in tonight's lineup. Span in, Plouffe out, Klomatsu in right batting seventh. And, yes, three catchers in the lineup. Hey, it worked last night. Span for Plouffe has to be worth at least one more run, right?

    1. Denard Span, CF
    2. Brian Dozier, SS
    3. Joe Mauer, 1B
    4. Josh Willingham, LF
    5. Ryan Doumit, DH
    6. Danny Valencia, 3B
    7. Erik Komatsu, RF
    8. Drew Butera, C
    9. Jamey Carroll, 2B

    1. I think I'd rather leave Plouffe in and sit Komatsu, but when Butters is getting another start, why worry about that part of it?

      1. I was in the garage last night listening on the radio and heard Dazzle say this with a runner on first:

"This might be a place where you want to send the runner, Butera handles the bat well."

Hey, I handle the bat well, too. But I can't hit major league pitching, either.

    2. That's a nice lineup in terms of left/right balance: left, right, left, right, switch, right, left, nothing, right.

          1. No, no, that's the Komatsu code. The Twins are going to drop 30 fly balls.

  13. Valencia to Rochester, Liriano to the pen, Maloney DFA'ed.

    1. holy crap. I did not see the Juicy move coming. Who the hell is gonna play 3b??

      1. Carroll. Maybe Plouffe some. Didn't Casilla play there some in 2009? Where's Tolbot when you need him?

    2. It's starting to feel like the Twins are focusing on coming up with new arrangements of deck chairs.

  14. “Mastroianni has been playing the living fire out of the game down there,” Gardenhire said. “Probably the most exciting player they have on that baseball team right now, running bases, stealing bases. He can fly. We’ll see. We’ll see how he does.”

  15. Just realized Plouffe has 10 walks and 6 strikeouts. He has the best ratio on the team. I hope he gets some opportunities to play third base.
