So after Bootsy's been pushing her for months now, I've listened very casually to Sharon Van Etten's Tramp. Well Wednesday night while feeding LBR her bottle, I was shuffling and "Give Out" and "Serpents" both came up, with two songs between them that I likely skipped. It finally clicked, and I've now listened to the whole thing through maybe 5 or 6 times. I'm not 100% on the full album, but of the 12 songs on the album, I'd say at least 7 are pretty great. I still have to unravel some of her lyrics, but now I'm fairly certain I'll put the effort in to do so. Her music's got some mysterious allure and a sense of broken, cynical wisdom. I'm trying to put my finger on why it is so, but I'm getting flashbacks to the first time I listened to the Breeders's Last Splash. (You may remember, but I've never listened to the Pixies, and all I had heard from the band was the single "Cannonball".)
Here's a clip:

Thanks for pushing this so hard, Bootsy!

Slight correction there: Marcy Playground, not Marcy's.
Named after the playground at the Marcy School, somewhere in the Twin Cities (where one of the band members attended).
Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears was one of the most fun bands I've ever seen live.
I saw them on Austin City Limits the other weekend. They sounded awesome

*Notes:
1. Borrowed this from the library a few months ago and I haven't really tried it out yet. The album contains samples all created from the life of one pig (except for the slaughtering because it's illegal in whichever country it was recorded), including the frying of the bacon made from the pig. Not sure where this track is from. Like fellow conceptual sound-artists who have collaborated with Björk, Matmos, I find most of his stuff to just be OK, not great.
(If I ever do make any music myself — which I won't — it will be conceptual sound-art like this. I have a few good ideas, but it'd take a lot of effort just to get the sounds recorded.)
7. A one-off d/l from Pitchfork. I know nothing about it, but it's good enough.
10. U2 cover, available for free from the band's website. The other new song was a cover of Jimi's "Angel."

1. This is my favorite local track from the past decade.
4. Whatever happened to Franz Ferdinand? When their first album came out, I freaking loved it. Listened constantly. Now I can barely stand any of it. I don't feel like my tastes have changed all that much, more like somehow their sound just crumbled over the past 5 years or something.
5. Yup. Still love this guy.
6. Perfect contrast to #5. So weird...
10. I was really into swing my senior year of high school/early college. Sometimes one of these songs comes on from that part of my life and I really miss it. This was one of those times. Damn, I loved dancing.
more like somehow their sound just crumbled over the past 5 years or something.
My swing wasn't quite as wild (I liked their debut, and I'm not all that much a fan of it now), but I think you're right here. I still like hooky guitar pop-rock music, and they certainly made that, I just reached my absolute saturation point with everything they did and I reached it a lot faster than with most song (even guilty pleasure "sound of the summer" type stuff). About the only song I can hear by them and not want to immediately skip is "The Fallen" off their second album.
I loved loved loved Franz Ferdinand second album You Could Have It So Much Better. The album has this nice build before it finally boils over on track 10, the title cut. Tonight:Franz Ferdinand I thought was pretty good but it lacked something that I cant put my finger on. I look forward to a new album, if one ever comes out.
Nice to hear, AMR. Next up you need to get the Epic EP. 7 songs, 32 minutes, not one false move.

Coincidentally, I've been listening to Tramp today, as well. Preliminary listens confirm what AMR says. Not necessarily front to back amazing, but pretty damned full of great tunes. "Give Out" is probably the favorite thing I've heard recently.
Yeah, that and "Ask" are my standouts.

1. Cred irrevocably lost. However, the gimmick of having the violin entwined with the poppy music was an interesting concept. 'Breathing' does happen to be the only song I really ever got into, and it's still an okay listen.
4. What Philo feels about Franz Ferdinand, I feel with this band. I have their first two CDs. I tried giving Employment a go the other day and lasted about four songs.
8. The transition from "Fox Cub' (the previous song on the record) into this one gets me every single time.
The violin entwined with poppy alt-rock guitar was done very well by 90's act The Dambuilders.

Violinist Joan Wasser went on to form Joan as Police Woman, as well as work with Antony and the Johnsons, among others. She was also Jeff Buckley's girlfriend at the time of his death.
1. Cred irrevocably lost.
You beat me to the punch. But you did have a nice recovery with Cults and Mazzy Star
I can't quite say I'm where you are on Kaiser Chiefs. Of course, I never got so high on them as to buy their music. I still like Angry Mob and Ruby, but I skip just about everything else every time.
Ruby is still a great song.
I always liked "Boxing Champ" best off of that album.
songs 3 and 10 I love.
I cant wait for the new Fitz and the Tantrums album.
That's another band I got over really quickly. Probably just played too much on The Current.
