  1. 1. Darin Mastroianni, CF
    2. Joe Mauer, C
    3. Josh Willingham, LF
    4. Ryan Doumit, DH
    5. Brian Dozier, SS
    6. Chris Parmelee, 1B
    7. Eric Komatsu, RF
    8. Alexi Casilla, 2B
    9. Jamey Carroll, 3B

Did Gardy go with the dartboard approach?

  2. The good news: Morneau may be activated after the game and Capps won't pitch today.

The bad news: Denard Span has a slightly sore hamstring, so Darin Mastroianni is starting in center field. (All courtesy LEN3)

    1. I was wondering about DSpan's amble to first on the last out yesterday. Can't recall ever seeing him not run one out.

  3. I predict a walk off win on a home run by Casilla in the bottom of the 23rd inning in a game where the Twins leave a record 46 runners on base.

      1. This might be the first time anyone has said "cool" to the idea of seeing the end of a Twins game during the 2012 season.

        1. Heh - historic baseball (46 LOB) would be cool. I just haven't succumbed the idea that it may be a historically bad team.

          1. I'm not sure what the actual record is, but I'd have to assume it's less than 46.

              1. Heh, the Yankees still managed to score 7 runs. The Twins will do it while scoring at most 5.

              2. Twins record is 23, in a 22 inning game. Bonus: This is the game Bert lost when he pitched in relief and then started the next game. The nine inning record is 17.

            1. What's truly amazing about it is that Capps will still manage to lose the game after Casilla's walk-off.

              1. Originally, I was going to go with a Butters walk off, but that just seemed ridiculous.

                1. That got me thinking: would it be worse to have zero career home runs, or to have one career home run that was a go ahead in the top of the ninth only to have Matt Capps lose the game in the bottom?

  4. I predict two no hitters through 9 leading up to casilla's HR. Also, no one will strike out.

  5. Hey guys! Nice to be able to see two games in 3 days.*

*I know how odd that may sound to you who have seen most of these affronts to the game, but absence makes the heart grow fonder.

    1. I've been trying to watch, but they* haven't been making it easy for me.

      *The Twins and MLB

  6. Stupid blackout... I was going to take an extended lunch. Now I'm eating frozen dinner crap in my office while I listen to the Twins' minor leaguers ground into double plays.

    1. That's what happens when you tell everyone on the farm to hit like Joe Mauer.

  7. If the Twins are going to sign a veteran pitcher in the off-season, could they at least check to see if he can throw strikes?

    1. And this was known before he was signed! Marquis' career BB/9 is 3.5. This year it's 3.6. The Twins are getting exactly what he is.

        1. I'm pretty sure they said he "threw the ball over the plate." There's always a hollow cliche to discuss members of this team.

  8. Man, this game is aggravating. On the plus side, though, we aren't leaving too many guys on.

  9. Twins are a perfect 3-for-3 in DP opps today. As soon as first base has been filled, the very next batter has grounded into a double play all three times.

  10. Watching this inning, one could get the impression that Marquis is not a very good pitcher.

  11. I know it's waaaaaay too early to be making any declarations, but I have a very positive first impression of this Dozier kid.

    1. A decent defensive shortstop who can hit over .200? Yeah, I'm more than happy with what I've seen so far.

  12. You know things are wonderful for the Twins when they can't generate any offense against freaking Jeanmar Gomez and the corpse of Derek Lowe. What a fun team to follow.

  13. You know what we should do? Have a convention without any tickets and then just go to the game and beat down some scalpers.

    1. Unfortunately, it might be more fun to harass the scalpers than watch the game.

  14. I'm giving them one more half inning. If it's still this painful, I'm going to go back to the job I hate and start doing some work.

    1. I'm thankful I have a meeting in 15 minutes.

It's mind boggling how bad this team is. I honestly don't understand. The team has terrible starting pitching, but the offense, on paper, should be decent. The offense is absolutely brutal right now. Nothing is working at all. It's painful, and bothering me a lot more than it should.

      1. At least you have the Packers. I'm nearly 50 and I've had to suffer through Vikings trauma, T-wolves inepitude, Wild ennui, Gophers putridness. Those two Twins world series wins are the exception that proved the rule my friend. What we are seeing now is just par for the course in my book.

        1. I'm in that boat, save for the Gophs, of course. Hey, anybody have have a bad year decade life as a sports fan.

          1. Me three. Add in Presidential elections, and that's another 0-2 with HHH and Mondale getting to the Big Game but not taking home the trophy. And I hope I am avoiding the forbidden zone by stating this not as a Democrat or Republican but simply as an observation of fact. If you take Ubes' strict parity measure, MN has been a state @ 150 years or @ 37-38 elections; there are 50 states, but were fewer for part of that time frame; so MN should have less than but closing in on one native son as POTUS.

            1. For POTUS, parity should probably be relative to number of electoral votes rather than number of states.

        2. In terms of professional sports, since 1961, assuming strict parity (ignoring asymmetric league structures), the Vikings should have 2.1 Super Bowl wins, the Twins should have 2.0 WS championships, the Wolves 0.8 NBA titles, and the North Stars/Wild should have 1.9 Stanley Cups. So overall, to have 2 championships out of a democratic ideal of 6.7 is pretty disappointing.

Here's something somewhat interesting, though: in 1961 with two pro teams, you would have expected about 0.127 championships per year. In 2011 with four pro teams, you would expect about 0.131 championships per year. Expansion more than anything makes it harder for everyone to make a championship title their main goal. For example, making the Super Bowl today is arguably a bigger accomplishment than winning the Super Bowl 50 years ago.

            1. Well, parity is a pretty terrible assumption for collegiate sports. There are no mechanisms in place to make bad teams better and there are plenty of incentives for good athletes to go to already good programs. But I suppose there are a lot of sports, so maybe it evens out a bit over the range of sports. Big 10 titles since 1961:

Baseball: 16 regular season, 8 tournament
              Men's Basketball: 2 regular season
              Men's Cross country: 2
              Football: 1
              Men's Golf: 5
              Men's Gymnastics: 11
Men's Hockey (WCHA): 11 regular season, 14 tournament
              Men's Swimming: 7
              Men's Tennis: 8
              Men's Outdoor Track: 6
              Men's Indoor Track: 4
              Men's Wrestling: 7

12 sports, 80 regular season conference titles: 6.7 titles per sport, which is above the roughly 5 per sport you'd expect. It's just that football, basketball, and cross country have been bad and everyone pays the most attention to football and basketball.

    2. Several years ago I was hanging some drywall in my basement and smashed my middle finger with a hammer. That sucker split open like a grape and the nail turned deep purple (but fortunately didn't fall off). That was almost as painful as watching the Twins this year.

      1. It's pretty tough to score from second on a ground ball to the shortstop- too bad it didn't sneak through.

  15. Mauer's average is now down to .270. He's been in a freefall the last two weeks.

        1. That double down the left field line against Toronto was the last I can recall - more the exception than the rule lately.

          1. Ever since that foul ball smacked into his knee I think. He's still feeling it, and might for a while since he's playing every day.

            1. I was thinking about this yesterday. He's completely screwed. He can go out, play every day, and get booed. Or he can go on the DL to rest his knee and get eviscerated in the media. All the negativity in this town sucks.

              1. He may as well play, I guess. It's not like the Twins have acquired a competent backup that he's taking playing time from. Even with his struggles, he's got a .391 OBP. It'd be nice if his manager mentioned that he was playing through pain or whatever, but I'm sure that won't happen.

                1. He should just say nothing about it, so we can praise him for being a "battler."

                  Ugggggggggggggggggggh.

  16. I'm ready for Morneau to come back- Parmelee looks like he needs to be sent back down for a while.
