Game 79: Twins at the Motor City Kitties

Nick "Don't Call Me Pirate" Blackburn V. Duane "30" Below

Seriously folks, Nick Blackburn isn't that good, but sometimes there is a man, I won't say a hero because what's a hero, but sometime there's a man.

No announcement yet, but #Twins and #Tigers will not start on time. Tarp coming off soon, but pitchers haven't started warming yet.

Ground crew scurrying to secure tarp over infield, a sign more rain is coming

  3. FSN needs new rain delay material. They have shown this 50 Greatest Twins program about 562 times. and the Twins Legends games about 411.

  4. I just saw a commercial for Pizza Hut and they were pitching something called the P'Zolo

To me, it doesnt look like Subway, but it looks like a glorified Hot Pocket.

  5. Rain rain go away come again another day......... For what its worth its 103 and sunny here in Vegas.

  6. I'm jealous of Detroit and their rain. I wish they could send some this way.

      1. Yeah, one of these days I'll get a blog and keep it. I hope to be able to make a wordpress template from scratch when I'm done with this.

  7. Oh, good, I see Blackie is sucking again. I was trying to pay attention, but I might quit.

  8. Who has won a mlb game more recently, Blackburn or Hendricks?

  9. The second pitch Blackburn just threw to Cabrera seriously looked like a pitch that I could throw.

    1. OK. I'll have some of my people start working with some of your people on it.

  10. This may be a stray thought, but I thought Plouffe was going to be something when he nailed a ball into the right field fence against the Yankees last fall. The last guy that I saw square a ball up like that was when Morneau hit the ball about ten million miles into the top of the scoreboard at Miller Park back in 03 or 04.

      1. And fittingly Morneau struggled the rest of the season after that donger too.

        1. Widmer's killing it right now. A year or two it was the only one of theirs I was into, but their recent brews (Drifter Pale Ale, Pitch Black IPA) are very good.

              1. I grabbed it when I first saw it because I thought it was a liquor store error:
An imperial, in a sixer, at the same $6.99 as the others from that brewer?

                  1. I must be misremembering. Even so, at four it's still cheaper than any similar beer around here.

    1. I saw That my local store has Rogue beer. So it's likely that I will get a chance at the beard yeast beer.

  11. I love how whoever is in the booth with Dick said that _elm_n was "definitely not taking this pitch" before he skied an out in foul territory.

  12. Having folks over tomorrow. All-Minnesota beer. I am having a Fulton Lonely Blonde. Nothing too special, but a good choice for the unadventurous on a hot day.

    1. I picked up a sixer of that on my way back from the Twins game last month. I found it a lot like you describe - fine, but nothing special.

      1. Had my first Lift Bridge at I Nonni last week. Farm Girl. Had a second. Sold out at the two closest liquor stores to me. There's a reason for that.

        1. Yeah, they're doing good work there. Making Stillwater proud, even though starting a brewery there was my idea first. The brewery is a mile from my dad's house, so I have no excuse for not having visited yet.

          1. I'll go when you go. Saw one of these at the local big box liquor store in a bomber. Went for a sixer of this for a similar price. I have to say, the Sága is pretty darn good. Nice aroma and a bit much on the bitter for my liking, but overall, very nice.

    2. Home brew (Furious Pro-Series), plus Capn Lawrence Imperial IPA if need reinforcements. And ceviche (ala Panama).

      1. I also bought Summit Summer Ale, Surly Hell and Bender, Grain Belt Nordeast, and Lift Bridge Crosscut. Other than the Nordeast, I've had none of those before.

        1. I know they make the Nordeast, but there's a sad lack of Schell's on your beer list.

  13. In order for Dozier to count as "speed on the bases", he needs to stop sucking first.

    1. That's still better than the shortstops. .578 OPS. I think Plouffe's SLG is higher now.

      1. Plouffe's SLG is .575. Taking into account Dozier's two strikeouts today, that means shortstops OPS is .572.

  14. Plouffe and Willingham have four more homers in them for tonight, right? Each that is.

  15. On the list if things I'd never expect, Jeff Gray retiring Prince Fielder is near the top.

    1. I'm trying to catch up... Blackburn gives up runs, Hammer and Plouffeda!, Blackburn gives up more runs... OK, I'm good.

  16. Difficult but kinda awesome trivia question on the Detroit feed:

Besides Hank Greenberg, what three players have won MVPs at two different positions?

    Spoiler SelectShow
  17. How sad is it that I don't get mad at Blackburn, I just shrug my shoulders at the inevitability of it all. I'm just glad we're still tied.

    1. That's where I am with him too. I no longer blame him for being as bad as he is, I blame the guys trotting him out there as a starter.

        1. I had folders with the original as a cover. Given away at my Catholic elementary school for some reason.

      1. I'm not sure who they would put out there now. I wouldn't want to put Hendriks out there to get pounded some more. He needs to go down and figure things out for a while. Hopefully, when P.J. returns, then they'll take Blackburn out. I can understand wanting to give Blackburn every chance to get back to being the average starter he used to be because of his contract. The stupid part was giving him that deal to begin with when he was still under team control. I think that was Smith's worst decision, not the trades or even signing Nishi. Those turned out bad, but there was no reason to lock the team into that kind of money for so little gain.

        1. There must be some AAAA guy available on waivers or for a PTBNL somewhere, right?
          The SP version of Komatsu.
          Where did Moyer end up?

    2. I'm mad at Smeltsnack, for having pitched 2.2 yesterday. Had he not, I can't see why Gardy would leave Blackburn in to finish the fifth.

  18. I love how Josh Willingham rarely hits a 'wall scraper' HR. Most of the time, the ball is destroyed.

    1. No, too early. They might need him in case the Tigers bring in a lefty to face Mauer.

      1. SOMEBODY SEND THIS PUNK BACK DOWN TO THE MINORS AND TEACH HIM SOME RESPECT.

    1. Im surprised the Twins allowed players to wear that number. It should be unofficially retired.

        1. well, Santana is still playing and there is always a chance of him coming back

        2. For a player who's still active with another team?
I'm more upset about Valencia's number this year. (Which is to say: not too much.)

              1. Heh. I didn't even notice. All I noticed is that someone else took his walkup music.

          1. These are valid points. I stand by comment. For some reason I take jersey numbers probably a little too seriously.

        1. That number really had a horrible history before 2002.
Exactly one good season from it before that year (1992).

  19. Gray and Waldrop in tie-game and up-one and late situations?
Do degree of difficulty points count now?

    1. Ah, ahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahaha hahahaha ahahaha ahahahahah ahahahhhha ahahahaha

      1. before the NCAA changed the number of participants in the basketball tourney, you can have called him 'Brackets'

      1. I quit after the first sentence

The Minnesota Twins have had a tough time getting their value out of Joe Mauer and his $23 million salary for the 2012 season

        1. Usually its best to quit before that, when you see 'bleacher report' in the link

          1. Agreed, but I've had my knuckles stung and learned doing so is beyond my control.

    1. But that would mean they would have three closers! That's too much proven for any one team.

          1. If you wear one of your old mascot outfits I bet there would be a market for it.

            1. A friend of mine who used to work at The Loon likes to tell the story of the time Crunch was caught in flagrante delicto with a young lady in the men's room. He was still in costume.

        1. Dream feed. One out left, I can stretch her.
I'll have the game on headphones, but no wgom or gameday.

    1. Scott Baker seemed to be at his best when he gave up a bunch of warning-track fly balls, so I'm not so worried.

    1. And if they did pay the copyright, we couldn't discuss the fact that they sang the song unless we received express written consent.

  20. Mauer now hitting .332/.420/.464 and is at $12.8 million before the halfway point of the season.

    BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

    1. Mark Grace's career line: 303/383/442.

What I'm trying to say is MOVE HIM TOO FRIST BASE, TERRY RIAN!!
