I played Superunknown for HPR while driving to the fireworks on Wednesday. He approved. I knew he would: Kim Thayil's guitar is right in perfect center of HPR's musical tastes. Don't think I'll play Louder Than Love for HPR any time soon, though...

Dig that Paul Simon song. When I was a kid, I had a small electronics set that allowed me to broadcast an AM signal (about 5 feet). That was the song I played before I got bored with it. I had to use the earbud as a mic and held it up to the FP Tape recorder/player.
I listened to "When they Fight they Fight." This was pretty alright...I'll try to remember to listen to them some more.
ooo! ooo! i love spookysampling days.
I'm excited to see what he picks. I don't think he'll find a song he doesn't know from my list though.
1. Thing For You -- Alex Chilton
2. Way Down -- The Feelies
3. I got the World on a String -- Frank Sinatra
4. Tail Lights Fade -- Buffalo Tom
5. Turtle Dove -- Trip Shakespeare
6. Until the Day is Done -- R.E.M.
7. Grounded -- Soul Asylum
8. Either Way -- Wilco
9. That Lucky Old Sun -- Ray Charles
10. My My, Hey Hey -- Neil Young
Bonus: Rainy Nights in Soho -- The Pogues
Not the greatest start to FMD. I am sure you guys will do better.
"Taillights Fade." I've really never listened to Buffalo Tom for whatever reason. I liked this quite a bit.
Today's list comes to you from Galaxie's Folk Roots channel, which I've been listening to on occasion. I don't claim knowledge about that kind of music, but I rather like it:
1. Chris Smither--Hundred Dollar Valentine--Hundred Dollar Valentine
2. Ramblin' Jack Elliott--Hard Travelin'--Friends of Mine
3. Emma's Revolution--Not My War--Revolutions Per Minute
4. The Gibson Brothers--It's All Over Now--Red Letter Day
5. Tiller's Folly--Death & Taxes--Go The Road
6. Charlie Faye--Heartaches and Old Pains--Travels With Charlie
7. The Tannahill Weavers--McGregor of Rora Set--Epona
8. Judee Sill--The Donor--Heart Food
9. Leonard Cohen--Crazy to Love You--Old Ideas
10. Eva Cassidy--Fields of Gold--Songbird
The only artists I have much familiarity with here are Cohen and Cassidy, so I had my pick. I went with "Hard Travelin'." A little repetitive (even for folk rock) but I enjoyed it.
Judee Sill made some gorgeous music. She also lived a tragic life.
httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNkSAeA3R_s&feature=related
AMR may be familiar with the Judee Sill number above via Will Oldham's cover on No More Workhorse Blues single. (I was not.)
I am vaguely familiar. Back in my pre-iPod stage, I sampled a few of her tracks and burnt them to a disc but never really got into her.
Didn't realize that that "Kiss" was from her.
Ok boys, time to put your pants on. My list started with all music from middle school or high school. Great start to a day and ended with one of my favorite sing-a-longs. Good music day.
1. Hannah Jane - Hootie & The Blowfish
2. Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee - Indigo Girls
3. Life, In a Nutshell - Barenaked Ladies
4. Stable Song - Death Cab for Cutie
5. So Much I - Red Hot Chili Peppers
6. Shoulda Been a Cowboy - Toby Keith
7. You Walked In - Lonestar
8. 1988 - Blueprint
9. DJ Abilities - Eyedea and Abilities
10. Don't Stop Believing - Journey
If I put my pants on will you promise never to list another Hootie and the Blowfish song again?
httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfGvCxsOnno
Ignore him Sheenie. I loves me some Cracked Rear View.
E&A doesn't fit with the rest.
sheenie!11!!! Nice to see you. I regret to inform you that I put on pants for no one.
However, I've got a couple of hours before work. Maybe I'll do one of those "Pick a song from each list" days.
Regret?
Okay, more like "proudly proclaim."
This is why you're still stuck in the basement.
The only artist here I wasn't familiar with is Blueprint, so there it is. Heh..."But Billy Blanks got you thinkin' that you know karate."
He's kind of awesome, though still just the second-best rap artist on the list here, most likely.
Life, In a Nutshell is my favorite BNL song. I also love how it's preceded by the cow song.
the barenaked ladies were always a little too obnoxious for me. that, and the whole ska bandwagon pretty much passed me by.
Yeah, ska.... hrm... I'd like to say that I didn't purchase a less than jake album, but I can't.
I still listen to Pezcore
I have never cared for BNL for the exact same reason--goofy Canucks playing up the yuks. Sorry, I know they have a lot of fans here. I just fail to see their appeal. Then again, you didn't expect a Deerhoof fan to like that sort of crap, did you?) 😉
I actively dislike Cake, too.
what about pie? Everyone likes pie.
What kind of pie?
how 'bout a slice of this, with a cup of Black Coffee?
httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3tcAO0CON18
I'll skip the Humble Pie, though I have a soft spot for wild man Steve Marriott. I prefer his work with Small Faces.
you could always have your black coffee in bed
httpv://youtu.be/AfdTnpV03p8
the Barenaked Ladies are triple platinum. Are you?
I never caught it before, but I think Annie's "Intervention? Intervention? Intervention?" matches up with the dialogue from "Frank Gets an Intervention" from It's Always Sunny.
the intervention gag is also on How I Met Your Mother, but that one has a banner.
on Community, the way Annie says 'intervention' is a runner through out the series.
.
* You Know You're Right - Nirvana - (self-titled)
* Industry - Bang On A Can All-Stars - Classics (M. Gordon)
* Xenoglossia - Grand Valley St. University New Music Ensemble - In C Remixed (T. Riley, remixed by M. Karlsson and R. Stephenson)
* Section VI - Grand Valley St. University New Music Ensemble - Music for 18 Musicians (S. Reich)
* Don't Let it Bring You Down - Neil Young - Live at Massey Hall 1971
* Cyclopean Remains - Walls - (self-titled)

* On a Plain - Nirvana - Live at the Paramount
* Legions (War) - Zoë Keating - Natoma (Z. Keating)
* Apreludes (in C-sharp Major) - Stars of the Lid - And Their Refinement of the Decline
Just starting "Xenoglossia." DG, your songs are always the longest, ya know that? (Okay, sometimes cheaptoy's in the conversation, I admit. At least the next citizen is...cheaptoy?!)
Hmm...it sounded like six and a half minutes of an orchestra tuning their instruments. Luckily, the next song on the disc auto-played afterward, and it's pretty rad (yes, I am bringing "rad" back).
"Rad" never went anywhere.
Well, it will this time, because it's got my backing, and I tend to be relentless.
I mean it's still around. You can't bring it back because it was never gone.
Eh? I haven't heard it from a mouth that wasn't mine in years.
It was a joak. It apparently didn't go over well.
I was just wondering who you're around that says it all the time. I was hoping I'd had some hand in the return...
No one actually says it. Sorry to disappoint.
Nah, it's great. I say it all the time to customers, and it always gets a chuckle. If it wasn't antiquated, it wouldn't get a reaction.
Weezer says it.
I mean no one besides you actually says it. Jeez, I'm just not clear today or something...
Like any remix album, there are good and bad attempts. This song isn't one of my favorites, but there's some good stuff on the album (including the short version - only 20 minutes! - of Riley's In C)
Yeah, shortly after that next song started, I realized I just hadn't been handed one of the disc's best tracks.
yes, I am bringing "rad" back
Booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.
Just for that, I will use it primarily in response to things you say, meat.
My plan seems to have worked.
Rad!
I started off today by breaking the handle off my coffee mug. Then, I find out its new desk day, which means moving things around. Dammit. Let's see if I have anything to make my day better. (other than somehow hearing that Portland has decided they won't match on Batum. That would be awesome.)
01. Skyclad - "A Clown of Thorns", The Answer Macine?
02. Skyclad - "A Stranger in the Garden", The Silent Whaled of Lunar Sea
03. Dark Tranquillity - "The Mundane and the Magic", Fiction
04. Hammerfall - "Warriors of Faith", Legacy of Kings
05. Black Sabbath - "Rat Salad", Paranoid
06. Nevermore - "This Sacrament", The Politics of Ecstasy
07. Testament - "The Sermon", The Ritual
08. Morgana Lefay - "Sorrow Calls", Past Present Future
09. Phazm - "Fleshback" Hate at First Seed
10. Agent Steel - "Avenger", Order of the Illuminati
Hmm, uplifting.
Well you've helped me smile, so there's that.
I'd never listened to Testament...they've just been one of the names I always see on your list and elsewhere in the catalogs of my metalhead friends.
Eh, I'm not in love. It's like middle-era Metallica lite. For now, I'll stick with Skyclad. They're awesome.
That's a fair assessment of both Testament and Skyclad. They sound like mid-era Metallica because they are from the same area and came out at about the same time. I was obsessed with them when I first got into metal, but since have been pretty meh in general. There's tons more out there, after all.
Brought to you in part by 1994-1996:
1. Everything But the Girl “Walking Wounded (Omni Trio Remix)” Walking Wounded
2. Tricky “Abbaon Fat Tracks” Maxinquaye
3. Balloon Guy “611: Code Name” The West Coast Shakes
4. Merle Haggard and the Strangers “Today I Started Loving You Again” The Legend of Bonnie & Clyde
5. Sonic Youth “Turquoise Boy” Rather Ripped
6. Tricky “Hell Is Round the Corner (2009 Remix)” Maxinquaye (Bonus Disc)
7. Lennon/Jon* “The Sext Files” Smoking Donut
8. Peaking Lights “Marshmellow Yellow” 936
9. Fennesz “Before I Leave” Endless Summer
T. Cee Lo Green “No-One's Gonna Love You (Video Rip)”*
E. Balloon Guy “I Ratted on You” Boogie, Rock*
Notes:
7. Lennon is Lennon Bone, the Drummer from Ha Ha Tonka. Jon is someone else.
T. Band of Horses cover. Video version is much superior to the album version. The little snip of dialog from the video's actors adds to it:
Cee-Lo (singing): "I never want to hear you say, that you're better off or you like it that way."
She: "Still want to do this?"
He: "Not Sure."
Cee-Lo (singing): "Cos no one..."
She: "Let's do this together."
[Crescendo] Cee-Lo (singing): "...is ever gonna love you more than I do."
Watching the video vs hearing the video flips the meaning quite a bit.
E. Double 7-inch recorded by Steve Albini.
T - I much prefer the original. Also, I much prefer to think about it as a parent singing to a child than any romantic sense. It works amazingly that way.
I first heard the cover, so that's definitive to me.
Its lyrics definitely require some unpacking. I'm sure I heard it as parent to child a few times, but something in there disinclined me to that view. Can't place what it was, though.
I know what you mean about being disinclined to that view... something there. Still, it also doesn't quite work in the romantic love sense.
Too bad you learned Cee Lo's version first. I feel like it lacks some of the subtlety of the original. And it's probably not quite as pretty either.
You mentioned them twice, so I was powerless against my curiosity over Balloon Guy.
I was going to make a comment to the effect of "Huh, I heard a lot of bands like this at Marti's in Mankato when I was young." Turns out I could very well have seen these guys. I didn't know if this would hook me, but a couple minutes in, it had. I guess I'm still a sucker for the whole depressing, slow grunge movement of the early-mid '90s.
Okay, I'd better shower. I may have time to plow through the rest before work. It's a wienery six-hour shift, though, so if I don't I'll just finish when I get home.
Everything I know about Balloon Guy.
1. “cherry tree” – the national – cherry tree
2. “blues for new orleans” – duke ellington – new orleans suite

5. “darling nikki” – prince & the revolution – purple rain
6. “christ for president” – billy bragg & wilco – mermaid avenue
7. “eat steak” – reverend horton heat – smoke `em if you got `em
8. “he’s simple, he’s dumb, he’s the pilot” – grandaddy – the sophtware slump
9. “serve the servants” – nirvana – in utero
10. “chicago (adult contemporary easy listening version) – sufjan stevens – the avalanche: outtakes and extras from the illinois album
Synchronicity on #5! (Sortof.)
I only have about half an hour and you're giving me a nine-minute song?! hj, you are trying my patience.
That was pretty good for a while, but easily could have ended about three minutes earlier (the Grandaddy song).
I love all 8:53 of that one.
dido.
There's nothing I didn't like, it just repeated itself a lot. Mostly, I was just in a hurry.
Yeah, now I need to revisit my old Grandaddy CDs.
Sounds Flaming in a Lippish sort of way.
in my opinion: OK computer + transmissions from the satellite heart = the sophtware slump
I'm back, baby!
1. "Satan Is My Motor" - Cake - Prolonging The Magic
2. "Nice Day" - Persephones Bees - Notes From The Underworld

9. "Praise You" - Fatboy Slim - You've Come A Long Way, Baby
10. "Running On Empty" - Jackson Browne - Running On Empty
Bonus: "Boot Scootin' Boogie" - Brooks & Dunn - Brand New Man
Notes:
3. Awesome song for Halloween mixes
7. Excellent album. This guy is something amazing at song writing.
9. Makes me smile every time.
I listened to "Nice Day." I immediately dig these groovy cats. Maybe I got lucky with the track, but I'll listen later.
They got some solid stuff. I recommend checking 'em out a little more.
I take this back. I was thinking of a different group (The Bird And The Bee). I only know 2 songs by Persephone's Bees. They're both alright. But nothing that I can actually endorse more broadly.
Sloan and Free Energy? Nice.
But then you go and spoil it with your bonus.
That bonus is pure bonus. Gotta love it coming up in that spot. Brooks & Dunn makes for some solid summer listening (once or twice... more than that and you've got a problem).
1. Blue Sky Black Death - Gold In Gold Out - NOIR*
2. Cloud Nothings - Forget You All the Time - Cloud Nothings
3. Julian Casablancas - 11th Dimension*
4. Radiohead - Lucky - OK Computer
5. Jars of Clay - Frail - Much Afraid
6. Radiohead - Pyramid Song - Amnesiac
7. TV on the Radio - Family Tree - Dear Science,
8. Carly Rae Jepsen - Call Me Maybe*
9. Blonde Redhead - 23 - 23
T. mewithoutYou - January 1979 - Catch For Us the Foxes
B. Led Zeppelin - When the Levee Breaks - IV*
Notes:
1. I've been on a big instrumental hip-hop kick lately. Between BSBD, Endtroducing, Clams Casino, and a couple of various others, I didn't get to sleep until waaaay too late last night because I was just enjoying the way they sounded right then and there.
3. A couple of summers ago, this was my alarm clock ringtone, Linds detests the song as a result. Last summer I put on Arcade Fire's "Wake Up" to similar results.
8. Because, you know, you can't just hear this song on the radio or anything.
B. Not a huge Zep fan, but dear Lord, is this one of my favorite songs.
Okay, this is where I start when I get home. Someone remind me.
I took on Blue Sky Black Death. I could write to that stuff. I like.
I have not heard "Call Me Maybe" (at least to the point where it stood out and I noticed it). I heard a few bars of Obama saying it (GHW Bush's cover of Queen was better), but I can't remember it really.
I may try to keep it that way.
I made it months without hearing it until it was played at a wedding reception last month, and now I can't escape it. We heard it 7 times on the radio on the boat yesterday.
Yeah, I mediafired it when I first heard it on the radio, because I'm not completely against a bit of radio pop now and again.
Then came the all out blitz. On one trip to Fargo (an hour and a half drive) I heard it 5 times there and back. But the real kicker was when a friend of mine and I were at a bar, and the same girl played it four times in about two hours on the jukebox.
I heard Gotye on three different radio stations at the same time the other evening.
After the Obama thing I decided to look it up, since I'd never heard it. Watched the music video. I have pretty much forgotten about it already. Avoiding radio in general has been helpful for that.
I dont think I'll ever put 'Call Me Maybe' on my mp3 player, but it is ridiculously catchy and a great pop song.
That's my take on it. If I actually listened to the radio, I'd probably hate the overplayedness of it all, but it's super catchy and fun.
I noticed some time ago that Trevor Plouffe uses When the Levee Breaks as his coming to bat music. Classic.
the 1-2 combo of Plouffe (Levee) and Doumit (Danzig's 'Mother') is solid.
That is pretty cool for our young slugger. Now he needs to get the Hammer to ditch his silly Outfield crap and go with something a little more befitting his bad-assery.
"Can't Touch This"?
I think he has switched to Sweet Home Alabama.
I noticed he alternates between 'Your Love' and 'Sweet Home Alabama' during the game.
First track to pop up this morning:

08. When the Saints Go Marching In - Eddie Bo - Our New Orleans
09. To Keep My Love Alive - Ella Fitzgerald - Sings the Rodgers & Hart Songbook
10. Street Hassle - Lou Reed - Street Hassle
That Midnight soundtrack is the best part of that movie, too.
Oh, good lord. "Gbe Kini Ohun De" is 18:26 long.
Kind of a nice groove, though.
'Underneath the Neon Sign' - The Kinks The Kinks Present A Soap Opera

The only one I didn't know was the Camera Obscura song. I'm no pop fan, but this was enjoyable.
you should also check out the songs 'French Navy' and 'Honey in The Sun' off their My Maudlin Career album
Seconded. dw here got me into Camera Obscura. He posted this performance of theirs on Ferguson.

That album became the soundtrack to my summer in Dublin.

Do you like the Joy Formidable's album?
Yes, quite a bit. It reminds me of a bunch of stuff I listened to 20 years ago, like Curve, Lush, Echobelly, The Heart Throbs, etc. I was always a sucker for dreamy girl singers and loud electric guitars.
edit--Listening to those, I really need to dig out those discs and put em into my iTunes.
What was the name of that punk rock duo you linked to a couple of weeks back?
Japandroids Celebration Rock. Excellent record. Got a desperate 'hang on to your youth/party's over' vibe. Like early Replacements meet Hold Steady at an amphetamine bash.
(I won a 50.00 iTunes giftcard at work recently, and picked up that, Jack White Blunderbuss, and Fiona Apple's new 100 word title. I think I went 3 for 3. Might cherry pick some older tunes with the rest of the credit.)
Speaking of Jack White, he absolutely kicks the crap out of U2's "Love is Blindness"--which is gonna be on The Great Gatsby OST.
Been a long time since U2 was cool in my eyes--or ears.
httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5wcPHLl7Ds
that didnt even sound like Jack White.
but a nice cover of a deeper cut from the U2 library.
For Linfinity's take on this song, go here.
I just downloaded that Japandroids album. Super cheap on Amazon. I think it was 2.99.
If they try to slow you down, tell 'em all to go to hell.
awesome.
Hey, BTW, thanks a lot for the box o' paint. Already have some of it on canvases.
(I'm giving the rabbit-skin glue to a friend down the hall at the studio. He used to use it. I never did.)
Awesome. I'm glad that someone is getting use out of stuff I found in a drawer.
"I Don't Want to See You Like This." Yeah, I'll check out this entire album later.
From a playlist of southern hip hop I am working on on Spotify.
01. Frayser Boy - "What We Pop" from Da Key
02. UGK - "Wood Sheel" from Dirty Money
03. T.I. - "Top Back" from King
04. T.I.P. - "Big Shit Poppin'" from T.I. vs. T.I.P.

09. Pimp C ft. Mike Jones & Bun B - "Pourin' Up" from Pimpalation
10. Curren$y - "Showroom" from The Stoned Immaculate
"Capitol." Yeah, this is cool. I've never thought twice about him while merchandising his CDs, but I guess I should have. Strange side note: this is like the fifth song today where I've thought "I should probably be high for this."
It takes All Kinds - Aimee Mann - Bachelor No. 2
Doghouse - Descendents - Everything Sucks
Empassant - The Black Lips - Let It Bloom
Adelaide - Old 97's - Drag It Up
I Hate The TV - Violent Femmes - Add It Up
Desolation Row - Bobby Dylan - Live 1966
Dark As A Dungeon - Freakwater - Dancing Underwater*

*This is an excellent cover.
Rad list Meat.
Totally.
So I mention how much today's selections are making me think I should be high, and the first lyric is "I need a drug."
Old 97s - Adelaide. As the day winds down, I'm in the perfect mood for this song. I hate to be so maudlin about the Citizenry, but damn, you've steered me right today.
Rad! (am I doing it right?)
Totally.
1. "Slapped Actress" - The Hold Steady Stay Positive
2. "I Go to the Barn Because I Like The" - Band of Horses Everything All the Time
3. "This House Is Not for Sale" - Ryan Adams Love Is Hell
4. "Young Love" - Sun Kil Moon Among the Leaves
5. "Swimming" - Sunset Rubdown Shut Up I Am Dreaming

7. "Other People" - Beach House Bloom
8. "Motion Picture Soundtrack" - Radiohead Kid A
9. "Southern Point" - Grizzly Bear Veckatimest
10. "Africastle" - Battles Gloss Drop
Yeah, Slapped Actress is one of my favorite Hold Steady songs.
Ditto. I've been listening to a lot of Stay Positive lately. It might be my current favorite HS album (subject to change).
It's a great summer album despite being kind of depressing.
Speaking of, how does one go about getting those bonus tracks you have on your list?
I've got them all split out, and can email them to you, if you like.
That's mighty kind of you. I'll email you. Is your domain still Delta Charlie Hospital?
Yes, indeed. Though it might be this evening before I can get them to you, if that's alright.
NO, DAMNIT!!1! I NEED THEM NOW!!!!!111!
Oh. Well... umm... sorry?
I think I agree. Boys and Girls in America is probably the "best", and Separation Sunday might be the most strictly "classic" Hold Steady album, but Stay Positive is probably my favorite (subject to change).
I know the artist so it's kind of a cheat, but I had to hear a song called "Slapped Actress." There wasn't enough slapping of actresses, but I dug it.
I decided I wanted to try a new artist here too, so I checked out "Africastle." Are they exclusively instrumental?
Not exclusively, but mostly, yeah. Their first album had vocals on several songs (although some are pretty weird sounding) but the guy who did them left the band before this album. There are a couple other somgs on this one that have guests, like one with the Blonde Redhead gal.

.
DJ Danger Mouse - "Dirt Off Ya Shoulder" The Gray Album
RATM - "Snakecharmer" Evil Empire
Heartless Bastards - "Searching for the Ghost" All This Time
The Black Keys - "Nova Baby" El Camino

Tom Waits - "Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis" Blue Valentine
Colm Lynch - "Wandering Home" Tickety-boo
Lupe Fiasco - "Little Weapon" The Cool
Kanye West - "Coldest Winter" 808s and Heartbreak
Speaking of Dinosaur Jr., they're playing in Des Moines tonight but I couldn't manage to make it. Super bummed about it, as well as missing Wilco last night.
"Wandering Home." I'm not sure how much I like his voice yet, but I like this song a lot and expect to look at more.
I prefer his first album A Whisper in a Riot over Tickety-boo. To my knowledge, those are his only 2 albums.
01. Suite Madam Blue - Styx
02. Miracles Out of Nowhere - Kansas
03. Have a Little Faith in Me - Jewel
04. Chicken Train - Ozark Mountain Daredevils

Here's a version of that last one recorded live at the State Theater in Minneapolis in 2009, Where the Wild Things Are tour.
httpv://youtu.be/iY5EcG0m9nU
"Steel Guitar Rag." A fine coda for my spookysampling day.
