Coles De Vries takes the ball for the Twins tonight. I could have absolutely sworn when he was sent back to Rochester the first time that we'd seen the last of him. However, as it turns out, he's been pretty persistent, and here he is making his sixth start. He's rapidly becoming a semi-fixture in the rotation, and the fact that he's the second pitcher starting off the post-All Star break seems to imply that he might be here a while.

Is that a good thing? I suppose if we had an ideal major league roster, a 5.17 FIP (4.37 xFIP) wouldn't get my heart all aflutter, but looking over some of the rest of the rotation - Duensing (who I wish would just get left alone in the bullpen), Hendriks (is he still with us? It's always so hard to tell), Blackburn (I know he's not in the majors, but you know it won't be long...) - it's hard to say that he's the first person I'd drop.

The A's are sending out Tommy Milone, who's gotten decent results in his rookie season, but seems to be pretty heavily built up by a super low walk rate. If the Twins can hit some line drives, he'll be toast, and De Vries can pick up his third win. Not bad for someone I figured would be kicking it in Rochester for the remainder of his career.

  1. As an undrafted free agent, the fact he's in the major leagues at all is a huge story. What's really sad is how well these so-called non-prospects have been pitching in comparison to the so-called veterans the Twins started with.

  3. I haven't even turned the game on yet, but now that I see the score, I don't think I will. I'm having too much fun with the daughters right now.

  5. Ugh. Two outs and no one on base and then a flare for a hit. Three batters later, it's 4-0. Oh well, just need five in the first to virtually assure victory.

  11. This is the first time in a long time that I have absolutely no inclination to watch the rest of this game.

    I'm going to go see if the new endings of Mass Effect 3 are any better.

  15. Weird, my schedule says the Twins are playing Oakland, but it sure looks like Toronto is bashing the ball all over Target Field tonight.

  19. I am watching on delay. Suckshark just gave up a jacked donger, adding to the general suck. But I am about to put beef ribs on the Weber, so not all is lost.

    2. Carbo-loading (sushi) for tomorrow morning sprint triathlon. Wish me luck. Minor Hill road has an 18% incline for the summit, gads.

      1. your sushi is different from my sushi if you are carbo loading. Apparently you eat the rice 😉 (I'm more of a sashimi guy than a nigiri guy or a maki guy)

          i used to work at a japanese place back in the day, and i would fantasize about stealing the 5+ lbs cuts of hon toro the chefs were preparing.
