August 2, 2012: Day Off

It's felt like ages since my last day off before this one, probably because the lack of customers makes for crushing boredom. I miss working in the never-slow Apple Valley store...

      1. And I want to be able to hear a game when I can see it from the window of my office.
I assume that changes the flagship, but the local AM stations will still carry it.

Wait, are you saying that 'CCO made it to C. Ill?

          1. I had an uncle in Kentucky for a while back in the '90's, and he said he'd get WCCO there sometimes too.

        1. WCCO used to be (maybe still is) one of the FCC-designated clear-channel stations on the AM band. When I was a kid living in Ohio we could often get baseball games on the radio from Detroit, Pittsburg, Chicago and St. Louis, depending on atmospheric conditions.

      2. I can barely find a station in Northern Iowa. Usually my best bet is 570 out of Yankton*.

*During station identifications, I always mutter about those "Yankton c*******ers". Too much "Deadwood"

    1. Yesterday's Brandon "Bad Knees" Roy was perplexing from Sid, kind of felt like he wasn't writing the column. That column, however, is more up Sid's alley.

Selig is not only the man behind baseball's attendance success but also was largely responsible for this area not losing the Twins.

      Yep, that's Sid.

      1. Well, "technically" he was responsible for the Twins staying. I mean, he did change his mind, afterall.

        1. Had he been more competent in getting his way, the Twins would not have stayed. So, we truly owe our team to the largesse of his failure.

      2. Yep, that's Sid.
I don't know, I didn't see that Selig was labelled as his friend anywhere.

    2. Its a savoy move by the Pohlads. Buy radio station. Move baseball right from CCO to KSTP and have Hubbard pay you over a million bucks a year to air the rights. Then move the baseball right to your radio station.

  1. Cap'n Karl tells me the Olympics are going on, you guys.

Whoa. The olympics started?! When'd that happen? They should do better publicity. Maybe put it on beer cans for people who have a life.

      1. Just found out about a last minute Dave Chappelle show at the Orpheum tonight. Announced yesterday and sold out in hours. Trying hard to find tickets, but no luck so far.

  2. The Twins led all of MLB in scoring in July. They finished 12-14 but had their first positive run differential for a month. Since May 16, when Revere and Plouffe were made mainstays in the lineup, the Twins are 34-34. The Twins have their entire everyday lineup under control for next season. I don't think the Twins are as far from contending as many believe, especially in a weak division. Next year could be like 2008. With a strong lineup, TR doesn't have to bring in top of the line pitchers. He can just focus on his specialty of plucking unknowns from other organizations and watching them develop into solid major leaguers (ala Scott Diamond).

    1. I don't think contending next year is out of the question. I'm not predicting it, but there are ways it could happen that are not all that outlandish.

      1. With the right moves and a little luck I could see this happening. By the end of January I'll be counting on it.

          This.

One of the many great things about baseball is the Hot Stove League-driven renewal of optimism.

  3. As of yesterday, I have a new supervisor. As of today, I discovered a new level of wanting to quit that I didn't previously think existed.

      1. Aye. But they've been awfully busy the last week, so I don't blame 'em for not getting back to me yet.

  4. Nothing is impossible but the bottom 3 teams in ERA are the Rockies, Twins, and Astros. I don't think it is coincedence that they have 3 of the worst records in baseball.

The current team is similar to the teams of the mid1990s. I expect similar results.

  5. Good news: At a time when I am desperately looking for a change, I just got a job interview.
Bad news: It's for yet another temp position that is even lamer than the one I'm doing now. My career seems to keep moving backwards.

      1. I guess, right? Depending on what kind of money they offer, I'd probably take it just for the change of scenery it would represent.

  6. Great, I have to listen to bozos talk about how Carmelo is awesome tomorrow. Terrific.

  7. Owner of the la printshop called today. He wants me to fly out to la next weekend to 'have a chat'. Crazy.
