Rad list!
1. “breakthrough” – modest mouse – this is a long drive for someone with nothing to think about
2. “technology” – the whigs – give `em all a big fat lip
3. “down there by the train” – johnny cash – american recordings
4. “do you love me now?” – the breeders – last splash
5. “say something” – dr. dog – easy beat
6. “cheerleader” – st. vincent – strange mercy
7. “train song” – tom waits – franks wild years
8. “where the wild roses grow” – nick cave and the bad seeds – murder ballads
9. “tangerine” – dave brubeck – the essence of dave brubeck
10. “salt sack” – ramona falls – intuit
someone was discussing ramona falls here, and due to that, i randomly picked it up when i came across it. sonically, it's a fantastic album (very subtly too; i wish i had some bose headphones or something).
Intuit or Prophet?
Can of Corn, DK, and I have been discussing Ramona Falls on and off the past few months. I'll agree with what you said - sonically, both albums are deep and rich. He's a hell of a producer. Prophet is one of my favorite albums of the year thus far.
the former. i think someone was saying the 2nd half lacked oompf, or something similar, but i enjoy it all the way through.
This looks like a fair random split of my music... Yup.
1. "Ain't Misbehavin'" - Louis Armstrong
2. "Free Life" - Dan Wilson - Free Life
3. "New Age Girl" - Dead Eye Dick - A Different Story
4. "Square One" - Coldplay - X&Y
5 "Dust On The Bottle" - David Lee Murphy - Out With A Bang
6. "Hey Jude" - The Beatles
7. "Organ Donor" - Jeremy Messersmith - The Reluctant Graveyard
8. "Jumping Jack Flash" - The Rolling Stones
9. "My Life" - Billy Joel - 52nd Street
10. "Everything Will Be Alright" - The Killers - Hot Fuss
Bonus: Mambo No. 5 - Lou Bega - A Little Bit Of Mambo
Notes:
1. A Louis Armstrong collection was one of the first CD's I ever owned. I lost it sometime in the early 2000's. I still miss it.
4. I don't hate Coldplay. I don't love 'em, but I don't hate 'em.
6&8 - I don't think it's odd that I randomly pulled both Beatles and Stones, but I do think it's odd that both songs I pulled were pure singles, without album releases.
9. Check out David Watt's #9
10. There's a little bit of happiness in me whenever a song from this album comes up.
Bonus: Aww yeah.
I'll go with the extremely unhip assertion that I really like Coldplay.
X+Y is my least favorite of their CDs, though.
I'll agree on it being the worst of theirs. Their best stuff comes when they break out the big orchestra sound, not when they're going for intimate.
A Rush of Blood to the Head is pretty much flawless, and their debut had at least 3 fantastic numbers. I haven't bought anything of theirs since those first two, but they came out of the gate very strong.
I agree on A Rush f Blood to the Head. XY was decent, but I couldn't get into Viva la Vida. I haven't heard any of their stuff since.

you beat me for longest album title this week.
You're just lucky nothing from When the Pawn Hits the Conflicts He Thinks Like a King What He Knows Throws the Blows When He Goes to the Fight and He'll Win the Whole Thing 'Fore He Enters the Ring There's No Body to Batter When Your Mind Is Your Might So When You Go Solo, You Hold Your Own Hand and Remember That Depth Is the Greatest of Heights and if You Know Where You Stand, Then You Know Where to Land and if You Fall It Won't Matter, 'Cuz You'll Know That You're Right popped up. It would have crushed the competition.
I tend to think her titles demonstrate a fundamental misunderstanding about the role of titles.
or that she's long-winded and pointless? (i keed, i keed)
Maybe she knows Phil's points are worthless?
Good grief... I've stopped already!
Twas joak.
I knoa.
(I'm not really exasperated, just playing along).
Yes, a couple of her titles are exceedingly long-winded (except for the concisely named Tidal), but the music within more than makes up for any pretension, as far as I'm concerned. Her new LP reminds me more of singers like Billie Holliday, or Nina Simone, or Peggy Lee than any of her contemporaries.

It's sure to land on my Best of '12 list.
I meant no indictment of her music. Some of it works for me, some of it doesn't. I enjoyed this one. It made me think of Regina Spektor. I probably should have linked those two in my mind long before, huh?
I've mentioned it before, but I consider the artist name and title printed on the spine of an CD/cassette/LP to be definitive.
Thus, Ms. Apple's second album is named simply When the Pawn....
Also, Fishbone's 1993 album is Give a Monkey a Brain...
I haven't seen a physical copy, so I can't opine on her most current album.
Man, that makes Welcome Back My Friends to the Show that Never Ends...Ladies and Gentlemen, Emerson, Lake & Palmer and The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table look absolutely terse!
O.k. that Chelsea Girl song fucking rocked!
Plus, Lo, lo lo lo lo lo lo london girl is one of my faves.
Indeed, it does. I saw those kids twice back in the day and they tore the joint up (First Ave.)
Haven't done FMD in a while, so it's good to get back into it.
