Friday Music Day: Sept 7, 2012

A few things:
1. Dolfish is touring this fall. He's playing the "Amsterdam Bar and Hall" in/near downtown St. Paul on Thursday, Nov. 29. That's a week after Thanksgiving. I don't know what cover will be (if there will be). Also playing: We Are the Willows.

I mentioned Dolfish once before, but, short songs that hit like the best Fiction 59 Spookystories. He packs more weight, depth, humor, regret, and human weakness into a very affecting two minutes than I've heard just about anyone else fit into a full album. I guess it's singer-songwriter stuff, but his instrumentation isn't like that, and his voice sounds like a gruff woman. I dowloaded his one release to date, the free EP "Your Love Is Bumming Me Out," without any idea what was on it (I think HHT shared a bill with him in Columbus and linked to it), and it grabbed me and hasn't let go. I really think you should go download it now and listen to it. If you don't like it, you're out what...? $0 and 8 minutes. Anyways, I'm excited for this show, it's all I've got on my fall calendar so far (music-wise).

2. Animal Collective released an album this week and I haven't even tried to listen to it. Enthusiasm fades, I guess. SPIN had a list they compiled of 127 artists that inspired them (mostly musicians, but not entirely). I liked seeing Gas, the Orb, Basic Channel, Black Dice, and Vladislav Delay listed. I've never listened to Gas, but I've been listening to the Burger/Ink album the past week between Dolfish and Pete Tosh. (The Ink half of Burger/Ink is Mike Ink who is actually Wolfgang Voigt a/k/a Gas.)

3. I swear I had one more thing I wanted to say but, I guess not.

----
Now please share your list.

  1. Apparently it's Repetitive-With-Exclamation-Point Day. If only Tora! Tora! Tora! was a song, then it would turn up in my list.

    2. Love me some bonus Wilco but I don't know much about Sky Blue Sky. What are your thoughts about it?

      1. I'm with Mags. It's perfectly good Wilco, but I would rather listen to Kicking Television, YHF, or Wilco (The Album) ahead of SBS.

      2. i'm not quite sure where i'd rank it in their releases, but i really do enjoy it (though it did take a little bit for me to get into it). check out the opening track (and the title track for that matter). they really set the tone for the rest of the album. if you like those, you should like it.

also, "walken" is probably in my wilco top 10, or very close to it.

    1. At first I thought you had a song from Madonna which would almost be an immediate disqualification. Also Dread's got a good entry but it's early.

      1. wow. I had to look at it 3 or 4 times to figure out what you were talking about.

I'll blame the baby for that one, his dictation-taking skills are still developing.

    B. M83 - Raconte-Moi Une Histoire - Hurry Up, We're Dreaming

    4. The whole "yaknowithinkaboucha" part in this song is one of my favorite parts to a song all year.
    7. What a truly useless starting track. Luckily the album picked up considerably from this point.
    8. My Bloody Valentine cover. If you've heard Memoryhouse's The Years EP, then you pretty much know what this sounds like, but it's still a very nice cover.

      1. I was lukewarm on the album last year, but I've listened to it several times in 2012, including one perfect drive in July where I ended up taking random back roads so that I could finish the album in a sitting.

    1. I was listening to this great Grimes single/video* last week and my first thought was "This sounds like Vitalic's 'Poney (Pt. 1)' but with Julianna Barwick vox."
      httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtH68PJIQLE

*Not sure if the song is great. I haven't gotten the same feel from the song without the video, so maybe I just really like the marriage of the video to the song.

      1. OK, not that she sounds like Ms. Barwick, but that she layers and echoes her vocals over themselves until they're smeared and barely decipherable, which is what Barwick does.

Also, I now know she's not a teenager (this vid, linked-to by Plastikman, was the first I've heard of her: I've fallen behind on what Pitchfork's selling), but I enjoyed the idea of this music coming from a good-looking teenager. I'd always dreamed of the day that some Disney-channel-type child actor would release her album and instead of being crappy pop, it'd be a collaboration with Panacea or Aphex Twin or something. I guess I'll have to settle for this.

      2. I've found that I greatly prefer Purity Ring to Grimes. They mix in a bit of an almost Witch House-y sort of vibe with a very similar style of music.

        1. you and your witch house!
Actually, I've got their "ungirthed" on mp3 and was meaning to check out more. But it seems more erratic than Grimes, which I dug because it sounded so housey.

          1. erratic's not the right word. Zammuto-y? From this one song, Purity Ring sound like an art-pop band with electronic instruments, while Grimes sounds like house tracks with non-house vox.

          2. I love one very thin subsection of the genre. Most of the stuff is about on par with bad chopped'n'screwed, and is unlistenable.

"Fineshrine" is probably my favorite song off of Shrines. It's certainly what I would check out first if you wanted to check out more.

  9. Buddy Holly would have been 76 today. Sigh.

    1. Brother, Can You Spare a Dime? - Dave Brubeck - Interchanges '54

    *Notes
    2. Don't know exactly what it is, but this is my favorite DJ Mix album of all time (and yes I do own a copy of Coldcut's Journeys By DJ). (Caveat: most DJ mixes bore me so I haven't listened to that many.) Great mid-90s house music. Claude Young scratches and beat-juggles a bit, creating tension and vibrancy rather than just playing a series of different tracks together seamlessly.

    9. Wonderful song, wonderful live recording, Dylan Von Wagner solo acoustic with tons of echo that just really fits his voice. Wilco fans can tell me if Jeff Tweedy's got a song about a man meeting his wife in the rain after she's done surfing and she's insane and then they reconsummate there in the rain.

    T. A MbD fan said this was a song I should really pay attention to so I can understand whatever it is that I'm missing about the band. Now's not that moment.

  14. 'You're Sixteen You're Beautiful (And You're Mine)' - Ringo Starr Photograph...
'Breakin the Chains of Love' - Fitz and the Tantrums Pickin Up the Pieces

'Against the Wind' - Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band Against the Wind
'Pure' - Lightning Seeds Like You Do

  15. I don't know how I've missed the "Bad Girls" video for this long, but I made up for it tonight by watching it about 7 times.

    1. Dear Fast and Furious movie producers/series rightsholders,
This is what it would take to get me in the theater for one of your films.
