I talked yesterday about the need to add weight training. What I really need to do is work on my upper body. The bike riding is terrific aerobic exercise because it employs the legs and that is what gets the heart pumping. The new switch to interval training has added in resistance, which has been doing wonders. There's just a ton of room to grow on the bike and I really feel like I've made some serious progress in the last week or so.
Last night, I rode 45 minutes (plus five minute cool down) interval training at level 12. I burned 571 calories and rode 16.10 miles. That is the furthest I have ever gone and is way beyond where I was before the last few days.
Then, I added a new wrinkle. The gym has these upper body machines. You grab the handles on the machine and rotate like the leg action on a bike. I went at level 5 of 30 for seven minutes, burning 35 calories. Man! That was tough. You can do intervals and the like. I am going to keep this in my routine and see how it goes. I will slowly build it up as I go along.
