Puerto Rican Palaver: Games of 12/1

MANATI 3, PONCE 2 IN PONCE

TwinsJosue Montanez (Ponce) struck out two in a perfect inning.

Game summary:  Manati scored all three runs in the seventh.  Ponce did not score until the ninth, when they tallied twice and got the tying run to second with two out.

Manati:  Shinya Kayama pitched 6.1 scoreless innings, giving up five hits and three walks.  Ivan De Jesus (Boston) was 3-for-5 with a double and a two-run homer.

Ponce:  Tomas Santiago struck out five in 3.2 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk.  Henry Ramos (Boston) was 2-for-4.

MAYAGUEZ 9, CAROLINA 2 IN CAROLINA

TwinsKennys Vargas (Mayaguez) was used as a reserve and walked in his only plate appearance.  Eddie Rosario (Mayaguez) was 3-for-5 with an RBI.  Daniel Ortiz (Mayaguez) was 3-for-5 and scored once.  Jorge Fernandez (Carolina) was used as a reserve and was 1-for-2 with two RBIs.

Game summary:  Mayaguez scored two in the first and one in the fifth to lead 3-0, then got two in the seventh and four in the eighth to break it open.

Mayaguez:  Freddie Cabrera (Dodgers) struck out three in three shutout innings, giving up five hits but no walks.  Juan Silva (Cincinnati) was 2-for-3 with a home run and a walk, driving in five.

Carolina:  Dickie Thon (Toronto) was 2-for-2.  Carlos Correa (Houston) was 2-for-3 with a walk.

SANTURCE 2, CAGUAS 1 IN CAGUAS

Game summary:  Caguas scored in the seventh to cut the lead to 2-1, but never advanced the tying run past first.

Santurce:  J. D. Durbin pitched seven innings, giving up one run on two hits and two walks.  Neftali Soto (Cincinnati) was 2-for-4 with a home run.

Caguas:  Mark Cohoon (Mets) allowed one run on seven hits and no walks in five innings.  Johnny Monell  (San Francisco) homered and walked.
