WGOM Fitness: 7 December 2012, Back in the Saddle

I was back in the saddle last night and no, that's not some sort of euphemism.

I rode the Air Dyne twice in ND, but the last half week, I was so busy, working late hours that I didn't get a chance to ride. Last night though, after Miss SBG had been in bed for a couple of hours (she went to bed early), I headed off to the gym and rode. I tried out an around the world feature on the back that was supposed to be like climbing mountains all over the world. That was too clever by half and I'll go back to the hill setting, which really gets a good workout going. I logged about 510 calories burned and I averaged 17.6 MPH. So, a good ride, but tonight it's going to be back to the hills.

My wife has had a really odd reaction to this whole program. I'm not sure why she's not exactly my biggest fan on this deal (translation: she's kind of weirdly negative about the whole concept of me getting in shape, losing excess weight, and improving my chance to live a long life, hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm), and last night she questioned why I would go to the gym so late. Well, the alternative is to go really early in the morning or go while we can enjoy family time. Setting that aside, I find it very mind clearing to go and exercise at night. When I got home, I was relaxing before bed and I felt like the day ended right.

The one thing of course, is that I am exercising when I am tired, so I might be susceptible to injury, especially later when I get into weight training. Part of my hope is that after Christmas my wife and I can take some classes at the gym together (they have child care, too) so that this becomes a shared time. But for now, I'll continue to ride at night. The upside to this is that the gym is relatively empty (although there are still a surprising number of vehicles still at the gym at 11:00 (which is when I left last night). The point being that finding the right time to get a workout in is really important to actually doing it.

  1. In college, I always went to the gym from 9-11PM. I prefer the emptier gym because 1) you can get to what you want w/o waiting around and 2) I can be a little self-conscious at the gym, so the fewer the better. These days I go around 1PM since that's between the lunch and post-work rushes.

  2. I wonder if part of Lucy's issue could be that she just wants you to be home. It may bother her that you're gone so much as it is, and then when you are home, you go to the gym. If so, the problem may take care of itself if Lucy can start going with you.

When I lost weight, Mrs. A was supportive, but it also bothered her and still does. She very much wants to lose ten pounds (I don't think she needs to, but she does). However, she is unable to, mainly because of medications she has to take, a side effect of which is weight gain. Her doctors tell her that she's doing remarkably well to have held her weight more-or-less level. They say it's not uncommon for people to gain fifty or sixty pounds or these medications. Mrs. A can't see it that way, though. To her, my weight loss is a constant reminder of her inability to do so, and it bothers her. I doubt that would be Lucy's issue, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

All of this, of course, presupposes that it's possible for us to understand women, a proposition for which there is scant evidence at best.

  3. Had a systems release this morning, which wrapped up barely in time early this afternoon for NBBW and I to get in our 9 mile run (per the plan) before it got dark.

Uff-da, though. Mile nine I was running on Gu-packs and core. Just did long soak in the tub with Epsom salts + gold bond lotion afterwards. Wish we had access to a sauna out here. Finnlander style.
