FMD: Jan 18, 2013

So I've listened to a bunch of things folks here and elsewhere mentioned on their various "Best of 2012" lists and such. Somehow, my favorite new discovery is a single from 2007 reworking a single for 11 years prior:

    * a couple of weeks ago, I heard FOX use a song off this album during a promo for the Atlanta/Seattle game. Weird since they were a minor band from the Garage Rock Revival era of the early 2000s and their claim to fame is that Denis Leary used Cmon Cmon as the theme to his show Rescue Me and the lead singer of the band was punched in the face by Jack White.

** I am excited to hear that Phoenix will have a new album out this year.

      1. oh yeah, there's that. I loved that soundtrack!

I really wish that game would play on my XBOX 360

  11. Spotify is killing it with their Hold Steady radio station - Dinosaur Jr, The Replacements, The Decemberists, and more. I seriously haven't even considered downvoting one song yet.

    *Notes:

    3. A collection of reconstructions of Lindsay Lohan songs. Kindof Witchhousy, I've been told, but I really dig the Oneohtrix Point Never song on it (my favorite thing I've heard from Lopatin).

    4. As far as I'm concerned, this group is a one-hit-wonder. This is the hit.

    B. Picked this up at the Electric Fetus yesterday. Haven't had a chance to import it to my iTunes, so I'm just listening to the CD this morning. The album's from 2000 and this is about what it appears to be about:
"Oh there ain't no riding bareback anymore,
Ain't no taking chances like before,
You don't agree with me you're out the door, honey,
There ain't no riding bareback anymore."
ZZ Top was there six years earlier with "Cover Your Rig".

    1. 4. As far as I'm concerned, this group is a one-hit-wonder. This is the hit.

Agree...Too bad, I really like that song.

      1. Boo! I could listen to Cults all day long (or is it Best Coast?)

(or is it The Dum Dum Girls?)

      2. mm... I have to disagree. There were at least 4 or 5 good songs on that Cults CD. I would buy another one if they ever intend on making one.

I haven't listened to much Dum Dum Girls, though I like what I've heard. And I've always thought of Cults as a darker-sounding Best Coast.

        1. I didn't mean it was rubbish. I meant that the only reason I want to listen to anything from them is "Go Outside."
Someone point me to another song, and maybe I'll dig it super great like that, but I doubt it.

    2. 5. Margot & the Nuclear So & Sos “My Baby Shoots Her Mouth Off” Daytrotter Session: 7/28/2008

whoa whoa whoa, what's this doing on your list?

      1. I went on a Daytrotter binge last year. Basically anything I might have ever been curious about got downloaded.
Should I know anything about this band? I think I confused them with Ned's Atomic Wastebin.
I guess I like "Claws Off" and "Journalist Falls In Love with a Death Row Inmate"
I don't know if I could listen to a whole album of this.

        1. nah, you probably shouldn't know them. i love them to an inordinate amount, but i've never meet anyone else that's heard of them (i'm sure you're familiar with that). i don't think those songs are by them though.

EDIT: i take that back, "claws off" is from their 3rd album (which i'm just listening to; it's... okay). dunno about that other one. their other daytrotter session is decent. "broadripple is burning" is my fav off it.

  13. 1. "Loaded" - Primal Scream - Screamadelica
    2. "Honey White" - Morphine - Yes
    3. "Spy vs. Spy" - The Spinto Band - Nice And Nicely Done

    5. "Put It On Me" - Ben Harper - Lifeline
    6. "Everyday People" - Sly & The Family Stone - Stand!
    7. "Hard Sun" - Eddie Vedder - Into The Wild Soundtrack
    8. "Dream City" - Free Energy - Stuck On Nothing
    9. "My Number" - Tegan & Sara - Sweet November Soundtrack

    1. Yay on Screamadelica. And on Yes. And on "Dream City".
Is that the original "Mass of Incandescent Gas" or the updated "Miasma of Incandescent* Plasma"?
*I don't recall if they changed that word.

What's going on here? I generally approve of a good chunk of your list.

      1. What's going on here? I generally approve of a good chunk of your list.

Are you saying you don't this time?

I actually approve of most of this list. I can take or leave #3 And #8 gets overplayed in my random selection, so I've cooled on it a little. #9 and #10 are remnants from my early forays into less mainstream music that was really still mainstream, just less widespread. No love for 'em from me, but no hate either. Otherwise, I like 'em all.

Is that the original "Mass of Incandescent Gas"

Yup, the original. I don't own the correction anywhere, but I've seen 'em play it in concert multiple times.
