  1. I'm not sure if the sign, the truth of the statement, or the pink suv to be my favorite part.

  2. ESPN had the Manti Te'o story before Deadspin but didn't publish it because they wanted some video. I love this quote coming from a "reporter" at ESPN:

“If I had my druthers, we would have run with it,” one executive said. “We’ve had a bunch of discussions internally since then, and I don’t think it will happen this way again. I wonder sometimes if perfection is the enemy of the practical.”

Yeah, I always associate ESPN reporting as being "perfect."

    1. I find it interesting that a player who was once involved in a double murder, and has never explained that involvement, is now an inspirational leader and a hero, while a man who may have misled people about his relationship with his girlfriend is said to have serious character issues.

      1. If anything, Te'o is the perfect guy to draft. He'll buy into anything you tell him, and if the truth isn't attractive, he'll lie to the media. The NFL should want nothing but guys like that.

        1. I guess I'm an optimist, but that assessment is the reason I stay away from the 4ltr. These are all real people involved (you know what I mean -1). But I guess maybe I don't have all of the information.

          1. I don't watch it at all. I was just taking a swipe at ESPN by whatever means available, because they're an easy target.

If Te'o is considered a bigger "risk" than Tuaiasosopo (I don't feel like Googling, so that's probably misspelled), then color me disgusted by the attitudes in football, but not surprised.

    2. I found it curious that this story was as big as it was. For about 20 minutes I was curious about it, but then it turns out he wasnt stealing money from people or cheating or anything I became bored with it.
Twitter is always on when I am on my laptop, but I ended up logging out that night and the next morning because it was just too much.

      1. In four months, some indie football team is having "Manti Te'o Girlfriend bobblehead night," a mean-spirited event where they give out empty bobblehead boxes, among other things. Not only is it a pretty rotten thing to do, it's also probably going to be a bust. Who's going to give a sh*t about this story in four months?

      2. Same here, I got about a half chuckle out of it, then got bored by the story. Good heavens, but does the story have legs I wouldn't have expected.

        1. same camp, but thankfully i've been oblivious to pretty much every development since the first day. usually the only time i watch the 4ltr (with sound, at least) is when i'm getting ready in the morning in a hotel whilst on a business trip. however, when i finally occurred to me that i can stream NPR through my phone/computer, i started listening to that instead.

      3. I thought it the interesting point that was interesting how all these stories about her from you know, reporters, never sought verification of her existence.
Basically, I'm a bit in awe of how AJ Daulerio turned Deadspin into both a) sports TMZ and b) the only place where real sports investigations that go contra to the official league or team line gets done.

        As for Te'o,
        1. He was duped the whole time (but lied a few times to cover up from embarassment or whatever of being blown off)
        2. He was duped originally and felt he had to go along with it to avoid looking like a fool and distraction, especially during the season
        3. He was in on it from the beginning (which isn't to preclude that he meant for it to go on as long, little lies often beget bigger and bigger lies, as any episode of any sitcom ever has shown us)

Towards JeffA's point: this is a new story, both this one specifically and this type of story in general. The Ray Lewis story is old and not that unique of a topic.

          1. If only this year's SB was played in [whichever city Lewis is from/whichever city the murder was in]!

              1. Wow! He got to play the Superbowl in that town in the year after he'd announced he'd be retiring!
How come I never heard about this? Sounds like a good story!

  3. Callis ranks the top 10 farm systems (h/t: Gleeman):

    7. Twins
The best collection of bats in the minors, led by Byron Buxton and Miguel Sano.

I wonder if either of them would hit better than Butera.

      1. Trading Myers and Odorizzi for James Shields combined with most of their other highly touted prospects being in MLB now, I presume.

        1. Combined with promoting the rest. It's hard to be a successful team and keep a high-quality farm system.

    1. I get a certain amount of glee from the Lakers having a worse overall record, home record and conference record than the T-Wolves. Especially considering they've gotten ~40 games each out of Kobe, Dwight & Metta and nearly 30 out of Pau compared to the big minutes for MN (Pek, AK, Luke and Shved) and only getting 18 games out of K-Lub and 13 from Rubio.

    2. Mark Medina (@MedinaLakersNBA):

Lakers repeatedly saying the season starts today reminds me of that kid who always hit restart button on video game consoles after losing

  4. So I was doing a search of recent cases on Google Scholar, and apparently I went so quickly that I am not blocked because they thought I was an autoprogram. Weird.

      1. I'm still blocked. I sent them a help ticket thing with my IP trying to get it resolved. What's the point of teaching myself how to do free online research if I'm going to be blacklisted and sent behind the paywall?

        1. Was it in KC that you had the oyster stout or somewhere else? Either way, I enjoyed the little sip you granted me.

        2. Man...I was hoping it was available in larger bottles. Just before Christmas, I found a 4-pack of it at my favorite liqour store in that size. Seeing as how it was the holidays and I LOVE the stuff, I swallowed deeply and shelled out $17. It was well worth it.
As to your conundrum, I'd say share the taste - first step down the road to reciprocity!

          1. 4-pack for $17?? Bargain! Consider that that is 1.32 liters of deliciousness, equivalent to about 1 3/4 bottles of wine. And you probably don't have to share it with your spouse!!!111one1111!!!!

            1. True on all counts, but like meat and Mags, I've had it on tap by the pint (multiple pints) and much more reasonably priced so I'll gripe just a little.

I also picked up a 4-pack of this...for, uhm, comparison's sake. Not quite as good, but really enjoyable nontheless. The Brothers seem to think it's a superior product.

              1. Huh. I've been to 21st Amendment (nice place, but it doesn't hold a candle to Magnolia Cafe, for one), but not had that one. At least not that I remember.

Also, the Bros. haven't rated the 21st Amendment product. That is the crowd-sourced average.

          2. This one bottle cost significantly more than 17 bucks when you factor in shipping and the euro exchange rate.... yeah. I'm glad the bottle made it safely.

          1. Not really. My general rule of thumb: if the music makes me bounce, I prefer the floor; if not, then I like to have a seat. However, with the tickets on sale for 2 months already, I'd be surprised if the few really good seats at Roy would still be available.

  5. The "No Apologies" song on The Current today was "Poker Face." I don't think I'd ever heard it before.

    So...

How did Lady Gaga ever become a thing? It was terrible.

      1. Funny story - first time I heard a Lady Gaga song was at the Dome during a Twins game. It was a clip of this one with the camera getting people in the crowd to dance for display on the jumbotron. I prefer the MN Lottery characters race as a diversion between innings, but not by much! I'll readily admit that the song is catchy.

  6. if you are on the Twitters machine and not following AP guy Jon Krawczynski you are missing out.

Only in the world of "sources" is Love to Lakers, Lopez to Wolves and Dwight to Nets the "perfect fit for all teams involved."
