Minor Details: Games of 4/16

Fort Myers remains perfect.  New Britain wins on a Dazzle Special.  A huge first inning for Cedar Rapids.

SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE 1, ROCHESTER 0 IN ROCHESTER

Batting starsEric Fryer was 2-for-3.  Eric Farris was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.

Pitching starsKyle Gibson gave up one run on four hits and two walks while striking out five in six innings.  Caleb Thielbar pitched 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up three hits.

Opposition stars:  Chris Bootcheck pitched six innings, allowing three hits and three walks and striking out five.  Melky Mesa was 2-for-4 with a triple.  Thomas Neal was 2-for-4 with a double.

Key inning:  The first.  The RailRiders loaded the bases on two singles and a walk with none out.  A double play produced the only run of the game.

NEW BRITAIN 7, NEW HAMPSHIRE 6 IN NEW BRITAIN

Batting starsJames Beresford was 3-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Danny Santana was 2-for-5 with a double and scored once.  Nathan Hanson was 1-for-2 with three walks and scored twice.

Pitching starsTrevor May struck out eight in 5.1 innings, giving up two runs on six hits and four walks.  Edgar Ibarra struck out two in two perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Clint Robinson was 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs.  Deck McGuire allowed two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out five in six innings.

Key inning:  The ninth.  The score was tied at six.  Beresford led off the inning with a single, took second on a sacrifice bunt, went to third on a ground out, and scored on a walk-off wild pitch.

FORT MYERS 7, PALM BEACH 4 IN FORT MYERS

Batting starsMiguel Sano was 2-for-3 with a grand slam (his fourth homer of the year) and a walk.  Jonathan Goncalves was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk and scored once.  Matt Koch (apparently pronounced "Coach") was 2-for-4 with a double and scored once.

Pitching starCole Johnson pitched two perfect innings and struck out two.

Opposition stars:  Tyler Rahmatulla was 2-for-4 and scored twice.  Lee Stoppelman pitched 1.2 perfect innings with two strikeouts.

Key inning:  The seventh.  In the top of the inning, the Cardinals put together three singles, two of them with two out, to take a 4-3 lead.  In the bottom of the inning, a walk, an error, and a single loaded the bases with one out.  Sano then hit a long grand-slam homer to put the Miracle ahead 7-4.

CEDAR RAPIDS 3, WISCONSIN 0 IN CEDAR RAPIDS (GAME 1--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Batting starJorge Polanco was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Pitching starBrett Lee pitched six innings, giving up three hits and no walks.

Opposition stars:  Brent Suter struck out five in four innings, allowing an unearned run on four hits and three walks.

Key inning:  The sixth.  The Kernels led 1-0.  Two walks and a single loaded the bases with one out.  Romy Jimenez singled to bring one home.  Another run scored on an error, giving Cedar Rapids a 3-0 lead.

CEDAR RAPIDS 9, WISCONSIN 1 IN CEDAR RAPIDS (GAME 2--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Batting starsByron Buxton was 3-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Jorge Polanco was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Travis Harrison hit a two-run homer, his second.

Pitching starSteven Gruver struck out six in four innings, giving up two hits and no walks.

Opposition stars:  Alfredo Rodriguez was 2-for-2.  Ryan Gibbard struck out five in 5.2 innings of relief, allowing an unearned run on three hits and a walk.

Key inning:  The first.  Cedar Rapids sent eleven men to the plate and scored eight times.  The Kernels had six hits, two walks, and a hit batsman.  Polanco hit a two-run double.  Harrison hit a two-run homer.  Buxton singled and doubled, driving in two.
