Batting stars: Doug Bernier was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Evan Bigley hit a two-run homer in his only at-bat of the game. He left the game in the bottom of the first after what appeared to be a wrist injury incurred while making a diving catch.
Pitching star: Kyle Gibson struck out eight in a complete game shutout, giving up four hits and two walks and throwing 114 pitches.
Opposition stars: Ramon Garcia allowed two runs on four hits and two walks in six innings. Kenny Faulk struck out three in three innings, allowing one run on one hit.
Key inning: The first. Bigley hit a two-out two-run homer to give the Red Wings the early lead.
NEW BRITAIN 5, NEW HAMPSHIRE 4 IN NEW HAMPSHIRE
Batting stars: Daniel Ortiz was 3-for-5 with a double and a home run, his fifth, scoring twice and driving in three. Curt Smith was 2-for-4 with a double. Danny Santana was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Pitching stars: Bobby Lanigan pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit. Michael Tonkin struck out one in a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.
Opposition stars: Jack Murphy was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one. John Tolisano was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Austin Bibens-Dirkx struck out four in 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing two hits.
Key inning: The seventh. The Rock Cats led 5-2. Starter Pat Dean retired the first batter, but then Murphy doubled and Amadeo Zazueta singled to make it 5-3. Lanigan came in and retired the first man he faced before giving up a double to Tolisano to make the score 5-4. He then struck out Ryan Schimpf to end the inning. The Mud Hens did not get a man past first the rest of the game.
TAMPA 8, FORT MYERS 1 IN FORT MYERS
Batting stars: Stephen Wickens was 2-for-4. Kennys Vargas hit a home run, his fifth.
Pitching stars: None.
Opposition stars : Shane Greene struck out twelve in 8.1 innings, allowing one run on five hits and no walks. Robert Refsnyder was 3-for-5 with two doubles, scoring twice and driving in two. Ben Gamel was 3-for-4 with a walk and scored four times.
Key inning: The third. The Miracle had just tied the game at one in the second. Refsnyder hit a one-out RBI double to put the Yankees ahead and scored on a two-out single by Anderson Feliz to make the score 3-1. Tampa scored three in the fifth to put it away.
QUAD CITIES 4, CEDAR RAPIDS 2 IN QUAD CITIES
Batting stars: Tyler Grimes was 2-for-4 with a double and scored once. Dalton Hicks was 1-for-3 with a walk and a home run, his fifth.
Pitching stars: Brett Lee pitched six innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks. David Hurlbut struck out one in a perfect inning.
Opposition stars: Starter Brian Holmes struck out eight in 4.2 scoreless innings, allowing three hits and three walks. Brian Blasik was 3-for-4 with a double and scored once.
Key inning: The sixth. The Kernels trailed 2-0 when Hicks hit a one-out homer to cut the margin in half. The River Bandits came right back in the bottom of the inning, scoring on a walk, an error, and an infield out to regain a two-run lead.
