This book as well as "Animal Farm" and Huxley's "Brave New World" were required reading when I went through school in the 1970's.

Neither of my children were required to read any of them, nor were they discussed.

Good to see someone is buying this one.

The fact that these three books are no longer required reading in high school speaks volumes.

oookay. You do see the irony in talking about government-run schools "requiring" a book about a totalitarian state to be read, right?

      1. AMR has always been at war with Scioscia.
All teams are equal. Some AL East are more equal than others.

  1. Buxton's catch was one of ESPN's Top Ten last night, after the Sawks finally found a way to beat the Rays. ruh-roh! Now the Yankmes know about him!

    1. From the Strib:

The 19-year-old Cedar Rapids phenom racked up three hits, falling a home run short of a cycle, knocked in three runs, and made a pair of spectacular catches Monday — and did it before the biggest audience he’s likely to have in the minor leagues. Fox Sports North broadcast the Kernals’ 6-2 victory over Kane County back to Minneapolis, giving Twins fans a sneak preview of a player they figure to be cheering for in 2016 or so.

      ...

Also in the crowd at Veterans Memorial Stadium: J.J. Cooper, an editor and minor-league expert at Baseball America magazine — and a new member of Buxton’s fan club.

“It was fun. He’s so much fun to watch,” Cooper said. “It’s amazing how many different things one player can show in one game. You saw defense, you saw him hit the ball hard, you saw the speed. He really put on a show.”

      ...

Cooper covered Andruw Jones, a 10-time Gold Glover and 434-home run hitter, when he was at Class A, and “that was fun every night,” he said. “This was like that — plus some.”

Andruw Jones plus some? I think 2016 is a little late.

      1. That article was also about Hicks going on the DL. From the comments:

Hicks has learned from the M&M boys that the pays the same weather you play or not.

        1. Any time someone posts something this stupid, I'm relieved to see that their grasp on English is so poor that very few people take them seriously.

          1. Yeah, that's a sidebar and cheap source of amusement. What gets me, though, is the Baseball America guy saying Andruw Jones plus some. The pre-fat Andruw Jones was capital A Awesome. Oh, and he was in the majors before he was 20. It's a throwaway quote maybe, but a girl can dream.

            1. Jones was signed as an international free agent, which shifts the schedule some. However, in 1995, his age 18 season, he was really good but not awesome in low A. In 1996, in high A, is when he was Awesome. He accumulated 289 PAs in A+ before moving quickly up to MLB: 176 in AA, 46 in AAA, and then 113 in MLB to end the 1996 season. I think the Twins move more slowly with Buxton, but I am thinking he starts 2014 in AAA and joins the Twins not long after.

    1. So the answer is to have Mauer bat against his own pitching staff. His numbers would be inflated even that much more because the Twins' staff wouldn't have the benefit of Mauer behind the plate.

        1. You misunderstand. In my hypothetical Mauer remains in a Twins uniform and the pitching staff moves elsewhere.

          1. I find it difficult to believe that other major league organizations would employ much of the Twins' pitching staff at the major league level. As pitchers.

  2. r.a. dickey has been a disappointment for my fantasy team this year. after his latest outing, yahoo offered up this scouting report:

Dickey now has a disappointing 5.11 ERA for the year, a number that is in danger of rising again this weekend against the mighty Rangers if he can't coax Mr. Spalding into dancing like Selena Gomez as he did during 2012's Cy Young campaign.

    uhh... what?

    1. Wait, Selena Gomez is a he?
Selena Gomez danced for his Cy Young campaign?
Selena Gomez had a Cy Young campaign?

What a horrible, convoluted sentence. I know what the writer meant to say, but that's now what he said.

  3. Who wrote it:

Both the Spurs and South Park generated so many classic moments over the years, they practically blend into each other now.

  4. Going back to the linguistic map conversation from a few days back, I just realized I say "sweet puh-tay-tah" instead of "sweet poh-tay-toe"

  5. an odd thing happened in the weather yesterday where the winds blowing off the (still) cold waters of Lake Michigan into Chicago causing a layer of fog to form and invade the city. There happened to be 2 baseball games being played at the time.
    here are some pics

  6. 270 minutes of soccer in Mexico in the final round of World Cup qualifying. Aggregate score over those three matches? 0-0.

Probably not how our neighbors to the south envisioned these playing out.

          1. As captain, Dempsey really needs to dial back the flopping and bitching to the ref to avoid becoming the captain who cried wolf. Otherwise, that was a completely dominant by the US. One other minor nit: is there anyone worse at delivering a cross than Eddie Johnson?
