A big day for Dan Rohlfing. The new recruits haven't gotten going yet for New Britain. The DSL Twins win a close one.
ROCHESTER 12, GWINNETT 8 IN ROCHESTER
Batting stars: Dan Rohlfing was 4-for-4 with a double and a triple, scoring twice and driving in one. Chris Colabello was 2-for-4 with a walk and a home run (his thirteenth), scoring twice. Antoan Richardson was 2-for-5 with a triple, scoring once and driving in two.
Pitching stars: Aaron Thompson struck out three in 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up two hits. Michael Tonkin pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.
Opposition stars: Jose Yepez was 3-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in five. Stefan Gartrell was 3-for-5 with a double and scored twice. Tyler Pastornicky was 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI.
Key inning: The sixth. Trailing 9-4, the Braves scored four times in the top of the inning. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases with none out. Yepez unloaded them with a three-run double and scored on a single by Todd Cunningham to cut the lead to 9-8. The runs scored off Shairon Martis in his second inning of work. In the bottom of the inning, Rohlfing circled the bases on a triple-and-error to give the Red Wings a two-run lead. Rochester added single runs in the seventh and eighth to pull away.
"Prospect" watch: Pedro Hernandez pitched four innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out three. Trevor Plouffe was 2-for-5 and is hitting .333 in his rehab assignment.
HARRISBURG 4, NEW BRITAIN 1 IN NEW BRITAIN
Batting star: Nate Hanson was 2-for-4 with a double.
Pitching stars: Logan Darnell pitched seven innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk. B. J. Hermsen pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two hits.
Opposition stars: Caleb Clay struck out eight in seven innings, allowing one run on four hits and no walks. Jeff Howell was 2-for-4 with a double and a home run, scoring twice. Justin Bloxom was 2-for-3 with a walk and a double.
Key inning: The first. The Senators scored twice before the Rock Cats came to bat. A single, a wild pitch, and an error put runners on second and third, and Jimmy Van Ostrand hit a one-out double to bring them both home.
Prospect watch: Miguel Sano was 1-for-4. Eddie Rosario was 0-for-4. Angel Morales was 1-for-3 with his first AA home run.
PEORIA 6, CEDAR RAPIDS 2 IN CEDAR RAPIDS (10 INNINGS)
Batting stars: Dalton Hicks was 2-for-5 with a two-run homer, his tenth. J. D. Williams was 2-for-5 with a triple. Byron Buxton was 2-for-5 and scored once.
Pitching star: Brett Lee pitched seven innings, giving up one run on eight hits and two walks.
Opposition stars: Joe Cuda pitched six shutout innings, allowing five hits and a walk. Patrick Wisdom was 3-for-5 with a home run. Nick Martini was 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI.
Key inning: The tenth. With the score tied at two, the Kernels defense fell apart. A lead-off error put a runner on second. A one-out single put men on first and third. An error on a force attempt broke the tie and put runners on first and second. Luis Perez then hit a three-run homer to put the game out of reach. The runs, all unearned, came off Steven Gruver, who entered the game at the start of the inning.
DSL TWINS 1, DSL GIANTS 0 AT DSL TWINS
Batting star: Rafael P. Valera was 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.
Pitching stars: Starter Onesimo Hernandez went four innings, giving up three hits and three walks. Carlos Aponte pitched three innings, giving up two hits. Jhon Silva struck out two and walked one in a scoreless inning.
Opposition star: Raffi Vizcaino struck out five in five innings, allowing one run on five hits and three walks.
Key inning: The second. The Twins scored the only run of the game when Carlos Martinez reached on a strikeout/passed ball, went to second on an infield single by Junior Aramante, and scored on consecutive two-out walks to Gabriel A. Ynfante and Valera.
