Minor Details: Games of 8/2

Josmil Pinto gets it going in Rochester.  A Bigley night in New Britain.  Adam Brett Walker II goes deep again.

ROCHESTER 9, LEHIGH VALLEY 5 IN LEHIGH VALLEY

Batting stars:  Josmil Pinto was 3-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Eric Farris was 3-for-5, scoring once and driving in two.

Pitching star:  Virgil Vasquez pitched 5.2 innings, giving up one run on eight hits and no walks with two strikeouts.

Opposition stars:  Steve Susdorf was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs.  Pete Orr was 3-for-4 and scored once.  Tyler Henson was 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs.

Key inning:  The fifth.  The Red Wings trailed 1-0.  Pinto led off the inning with a single and Jermaine Mitchell hit a one-out single.  There were still two on with two out when Eduardo Escobar delivered a two-run double to put Rochester in the lead.

Prospect watch:  Escobar was 1-for-5 with a walk and a double, scoring three times.  Chris Parmelee was 1-for-4 with two walks and a double, scoring twice.

NEW BRITAIN 9, ERIE 6 IN NEW BRITAIN

Batting stars:  Evan Bigley was 3-for-4 with a home run (his second), scoring twice and driving in three.  Angel Morales was 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, and a home run (his fourth), scoring twice and driving in three.

Pitching stars:  Kyle Davies struck out seven in seven innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits and two walks.  Daniel Sattler pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Wade Gaynor was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Ramon Cabrera was 1-for-3 with a walk and a double, scoring once and driving in two.

Key inning:  The fifth.  The Rock Cats trailed 3-2.  Morales walked, took third on a Danny Santana single, and scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.  Nate Hanson walked, a ground out brought home the go-ahead run, and Bigley killed the rally with a two-run homer to make it 6-3.

Prospect watch:  Eddie Rosario was 0-for-4.

TAMPA 2, FORT MYERS 1 IN TAMPA

Batting star:  Dalton Hicks was 1-for-3 with a walk.

Pitching stars:  Starter Manuel Soliman pitched 3.1 scoreless innings, giving up three hits and two walks with one strikeout.  Adrian Salcedo retired all eight batters he faced, striking out three of them.

Opposition stars:  Scottie Allen struck out eight in four innings, allowing one run on two hits and two walks.  Brandon Pinder struck out five in 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and no walks.  Robert Refsnyder was 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

Key inning:  The seventh.  The Yankees trailed 1-0.  A walk and two singles loaded the bases with one out.  The next batter popped up, but with two out Refsnyder delivered a two-run single.

Prospect watch:  Darin Mastroianni, on a rehab assignment, was 1-for-2 and scored once.  Kennys Vargas was 0-for-4.  Mike Kvasnicka was 0-for-3.

BURLINGTON 6, CEDAR RAPIDS 2 IN BURLINGTON

Batting star:  Adam Brett Walker II was 2-for-4 with a home run, his twenty-third.

Pitching stars:  Alex Muren struck out four in three shutout innings, giving up no hits and no walks.  Hudson Boyd pitched two shutout innings, giving up no hits and one walk.

Opposition stars:  Starter Reid Scoggins struck out seven in four shutout innings, allowing two hits and no walks.  Joey Krehbiel struck out five in four innings, allowing one run on three hits and no walks.

Key inning:  The second.  In a scoreless tie, the Bees scored all six of their runs.  A walk and three singles made it 1-0 with the bases loaded and none out.  A ground out made it 2-0, a two-run single by Angel Rosa made it 4-0, Sherman Johnson doubled to put runners on second and third, an error brought home the fifth run and a ground out plated the sixth.  The damage came off starter Tim Atherton, who retired the side in order in each of his other two innings.

Prospect watch:  Max Kepler was 0-for-4.

BLUEFIELD 11, ELIZABETHTON 3 IN ELIZABETHTON

Batting stars:  Logan Wade was 2-for-4 with a triple.  Javier Pimentel was 2-for-4 with a double and scored once.  Zach Granite was 2-for-4 with a walk.

Pitching stars:  None.

Opposition stars:  Matt Dean was 3-for-4 with a walk and a double, scoring once.  Nico Taylor was 2-for-4 with two walks and a double, scoring once and driving in three.  Mitch Nay was 2-for-3 with three walks, scoring twice and driving in two.

Key inning:  The fifth.  The Blue Jays trailed 2-1.  A triple and two walks loaded the bases with one out.  A ground out tied the score and a two-run single by Jorge Saez put Bluefield in the lead.

Prospect watch:  Dereck Rodriguez was 0-for-5.

GCL TWINS 5, GCL RED SOX 3 AT RED SOX (GAME 1--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Chad Christensen was 1-for-2 with a walk and a double, scoring twice and driving in one.  Jorge Fernandez was 1-for-2 with a walk and a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Jason Kanzler was 1-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs.

Pitching stars:  Fernando Romero struck out five in five shutout innings, giving up one hit and one walk.  Lester Oliveros, on a rehab assignment, struck out three in a scoreless inning, giving up no hits and one walk.

Opposition star:  Jake Davies was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.

Key inning:  The fourth.  It was a scoreless tie.  Engelb Vielma led off the inning with a single, but was still on first with two out.  Christensen put the Twins in the lead with an RBI double, Fernandez walked, and Kanzler hit a two-run triple to give the Twins a 3-0 lead.

Prospect watch:  Zach Larson was 0-for-4.  Wilkin Ramirez, on a rehab assignment, was 0-for-2 with a walk and a run.

GCL RED SOX 2, GCL TWINS 1 AT RED SOX (GAME 2--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Joel Polanco was 2-for-3 with a double.  Brian Navarreto was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Reyson Zoquiel pitched a scoreless inning, giving up no hits and one walk.  Josh Guyer struck out one in a scoreless inning, giving up one hit and no walks.

Opposition stars:  Luis Ortega pitched five shutout innings, allowing three hits and no walks with four strikeouts.  Aneudis Peralta was 1-for-2 with a walk and scored once.

Key inning:  The fourth.  It was a scoreless tie.  Two singles and a passed ball put runners on second and third with none out.  Joseph Monge singled in one run and a sacrifice fly brought home a second.

Prospect watch:  Adonis Pacheco was 1-for-3 with a triple.  Alex Swim was 0-for-3.

DSL TWINS 8, DSL ORIOLES1 7 AT ORIOLES1

Batting stars:  Francis Mateo was 3-for-4 with two doubles, scoring once and driving in one.  Dubal Baez was 3-for-6 with a double and scored once.  Frank Encarnacion was 2-for-4 with a walk and a triple, scoring twice and driving in two.

Pitching star:  Alexis Tapia pitched four innings of relief, giving up one run on five hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

Opposition stars:  Sergio Lamas was 2-for-3 and scored twice.  Guillermo Salas was 2-for-5 with a walk and scored once.  Carlos Rodriguez was 1-for-2 with two walks and a double and scored once.

Key inning:  The ninth.  The score was tied at six.  In the top of the inning, a walk, a catcher's interference, a force out, and a stolen base resulted in runners on second and third for the Twins with one out.  Rochendrick Alexander hit a sacrifice fly to put the Twins ahead and Ariel Montesino singled in an insurance run.  The Twins needed it, as the Orioles1 came back in the bottom of the inning.  A single and a hit batsman put two runners on with one out.  Somehow, a runner scored from second on a force out to make the score 8-7.  A walk and a double steal put runners on second and third with two out, but a fly out ended the game.

Prospect watch:  Manuel Guzman was 1-for-3 with two walks and scored once.  Joel Ramirez was 0-for-4.  Jhon Silva pitched two innings, giving up one run on one hit and one walk with one strikeout.

    1. Me, too. I have no idea how much of a prospect he is, but if he's not one of the stars I always include him in the prospect watch because, well, his name is Zach Granite. I really don't feel a need for another reason.

    1. You mean Adam Brett Walker II!

      He has a lot of power. He also strikes out a lot and doesn't walk that much, which is probably why the Twins have kept him in Cedar Rapids. He's 21 and was a third-round draft choice in 2012. There are definitely reasons to keep an eye on him beyond the awesomeness of his name.

      Miguel Sano was out of the New Britain lineup again, but a source informed me that he had a tight hamstring. Also, Byron Buxton was out of the Ft. Myers lineup for the fifth straight game. He reportedly lost a toenail and is deemed day-to-day.
