ROCHESTER 5, NORFOLK 0 IN NORFOLK

Batting stars:  Eduardo Escobar was 4-for-5 with two doubles, scoring once and driving in one.  Deibinson Romero was 2-for-3 with two walks and a triple, scoring once and driving in one.  Ray Olmedo was 2-for-4 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.

Pitching star:  Scott Diamond pitched a complete-game five-hit shutout, giving up no walks and striking out four.

Opposition star:  Ex-Twin Jason Pridie was 2-for-4.

Key inning:  The fourth.  It was a scoreless tie.  Romero opened the inning with a single and was on third with two out.  James Beresford put the Red Wings ahead with an RBI single and stole second.  That was followed by singles by Olmedo, Eric Fryer, Escobar, and Eric Farris to make the score 4-0.

Prospect watch:  Chris Parmelee was 0-for-5.

Pennant race update:  Rochester is in first place, leading Buffalo by 2.5 games.

READING 14, NEW BRITAIN 5 IN READING

Batting stars:  Miguel Sano was 2-for-5 with a double, a home run (his thirteenth), and two RBIs.  Dan Rohlfing was 3-for-5.

Pitching star:  Daniel Sattler pitched a scoreless inning with two strikeouts.

Opposition stars:  Maikel Franco was 3-for-4 with a grand slam, scoring twice.  Kelly Dugan was 2-for-5 with a home run, scoring twice and driving in two.  Ex-Twin Matt Tolbert was 2-for-5 with a triple, scoring twice and driving in two.

Key inning:  The fifth.  New Britain had gone down 4-1 in the first, but had battled back and trailed 5-4.  In this inning, however, the Fightin Phils struck for six to put the game away.  Home runs were the only hits Reading got in the inning.  Dugan led off the inning with a homer to make it 6-4.  That was followed by an error, a walk, and a pair of productive outs that made it 7-4.  A walk and a hit batsman loaded the bases and Franco hit a grand slam to increase the lead to 11-4.

Prospect watch:  Wilkin Ramirez was 0-for-5.  Eddie Rosario was 1-for-4 with a walk.

Pennant race update:  New Britain is six games out of the last playoff spot.

FORT MYERS 5, JUPITER 2 (GAME 1)

Batting star:  Kennys Vargas was 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Manuel Soliman started and pitched 2.1 innings, giving up an unearned run on three hits and two walks with four strikeouts before being removed following a rain delay.  Steven Gruver pitched three innings, giving up one run on one hit and four walks with two strikeouts.  Chad Rodgers pitched 3.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and no walks with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Jake Esch started and pitched three shutout innings, allowing one hit and one walk.  Kevin Cravey struck out three in 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and two walks.

Key inning:  The seventh.  The score was tied at two.  The Miracle opened the inning with a reached-on-error and three walks to take the lead.  Aderlin Mejia and Vargas followed with RBI singles to make the score 5-2.

Prospect watch:  Buxton was 1-for-4 with a walk, scoring once and driving in two.  Mejia was 1-for-4 with a walk and an RBI.  Mike Kvasnicka was 0-for-4.  Dalton Hicks was 0-for-2 with a walk.

FORT MYERS 3, JUPITER 1 (GAME 2--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Dalton Hicks was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.  Stephen Wickens was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Pitching star:  Cole DeVries pitched five shutout innings, giving up two hits and no walks with four strikeouts.

Opposition stars:  Scott Lyman pitched 5.1 innings, allowing two runs on six hits and four walks with three strikeouts.  Yordy Cabrera was 1-for-2 with a walk.

Key inning:  The seventh.  The Hammerheads had scored in the sixth to cut the lead to 2-1.  In this inning, Levi Michael walked, stole second, and went to third on a Byron Buxton single.  A hit batsman loaded the bases.  Following a force out, Hicks hit a sacrifice fly to bring home an insurance run.

Prospect watch:  Buxton was 1-for-3 with a walk and scored twice.  Kennys Vargas was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Mike Kvasnicka was 1-for-3.

CEDAR RAPIDS 8, KANE COUNTY 4 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars:  Adam Brett Walker II was 2-for-4 with a walk, a triple, and a three-run homer (his twenty-sixth), scoring twice.  Jorge Polanco was 2-for-4 with a double and scored twice.  Travis Harrison was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.

Pitching star:  Alex Muren struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up one hit and no walks.

Opposition stars:  Rock Shoulders was 2-for-5 and scored once.  Marco Hernandez was 2-for-5 and scored once.  Dan Vogelbach was 1-for-2 with three walks.

Key inning:  The fifth.  The Kernels led 3-1.  With two out and none on, Niko Goodrum walked, Polanco singled, and Walker II hit a three-run homer to make it a 6-1 game.

Prospect watch:  Max Kepler was 0-for-5.

ELIZABETHTON 12, BURLINGTON 5 IN BURLINGTON

Batting stars:  Stuart Turner was 2-for-4 with two walks, a double, and a home run, scoring twice and driving in three.  Tanner Vavra was 3-for-4 with a walk, scoring once and driving in two.  Zach Granite was 2-for-5 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.

Pitching stars:  Tanner Mendonca struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up one hit and one walk.  Aaron Slegers struck out three in three shutout innings, giving up one hit and no walks.

Opposition stars:  Mauricio Ramos was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Alex Newman was 2-for-4 and scored once.  Jerrell Allen was 2-for-4 and scored once.

Key inning:  The seventh.  The Twins trailed 5-4.  Singles by Zach Larson and Kelvin Ortiz and a walk to Romy Jimenez loaded the bases with none out.  Following a strikeout, Vavra singled to tie the game.  With two out, consecutive bases-loaded walks to Ryan Walker and Turner made it 7-5.  Rory Rhodes then hit a grand slam to put the Twins up 11-5.

Prospect watch:  Larson was 2-for-5, scoring once and driving in one.  Jimenez was 0-for-4 with a walk and scored twice.  Yorman Landa pitched four innings, giving up five runs (three earned) on seven hits and three walks with two strikeouts.

DSL DIAMONDBACKS AT DSL TWINS

The game was suspended after nine innings with the score tied 5-5.  The Twins had trailed 5-3 in the bottom of the ninth when Frank Encarnacion hit a two-run homer.
