Minor Details: Games of 8/18

Logan Darnell does darn well.  So does Josue Montanez.  Stephen Gonsalves continues to impress.

ROCHESTER 1, LOUISVILLE 0 IN ROCHESTER

Batting stars:  None.

Pitching stars:  Logan Darnell pitched eight innings, giving up five hits and a walk with six strikeouts.  Michael Tonkin struck out two in a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Pedro Villareal struck out three in three innings, allowing one run on three hits and two walks.  Curtis Partsch pitched two perfect innings with two strikeouts.  Zach Duke pitched two perfect innings, striking out four of the six batters he faced.

Key inning:  The second.  In a scoreless tie, Chris Colabello led off with a single and advanced to second with two out.  James Beresford lined a single to center to drive in the only run of the game.

Prospect watch:  Darin Mastroianni was 1-for-4.  Eduardo Escobar was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Chris Parmelee was 0-for-2 with a walk.  Colabello was 1-for-3 and scored once.

Pennant race update:  Rochester leads Pawtucket by two games in the International League North.

NEW BRITAIN 5, BINGHAMTON 3 IN BINGHAMTON

Batting star:  Nate Hanson was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, his seventh.

Pitching stars:  D. J. Baxendale struck out eight in six innings, giving up three runs on six hits and a walk.  Matt Hauser struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up one hit and no walks.  Daniel Sattler pitched a scoreless inning, giving up no hits and one walk.

Opposition stars:  Xorge Carillo was 2-for-4 with a double.  Armando Rodriguez struck out three in two shutout innings, allowing one hit and no walks.

Key inning:  The fifth.  The Rock Cats trailed 1-0.  Miguel Sano led off the inning with a single and Hanson hit a two-run homer.  Eddie Rosario singled and Reynaldo Rodriguez hit a two-run homer, still with none out.  With one out, Jordan Parraz walked, went to third on a steal-plus-error, and scored on a two-out single by Evan Bigley to make it 5-1.

Prospect watch:  Sano was 1-for-4 and scored once.  Rosario was 1-for-3 with a walk and scored once.

FORT MYERS AT BRADENTON

The game was suspended after three innings with Bradenton leading 2-0.

CEDAR RAPIDS 3, PEORIA 1 IN PEORIA

Batting star:  Niko Goodrum was 2-for-4.

Pitching stars:  Josue Montanez pitched 7.2 innings, giving up one run on seven hits and one walk with four strike0uts.  Brian Gilbert retired all four batters he faced.

Opposition stars:  Kyle Helisek struck out eight in 6.2 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits and no walks.  Ildemaro Vargas was 2-for-3.  Charlie Tilson was 2-for-4 and scored once.

Key inning:  The seventh.  The Kernels led 1-0.  A hit batsman and an error put Travis Harrison on second with none out.  Joel Licon singled in a run and took second on another error.  With two out, Jonathan Murphy singled to make it 3-0.

Prospect watch:  Max Kepler was 0-for-4.  Adam Brett Walker II was 0-for-4.

ELIZABETHTON 5, GREENEVILLE 2 IN ELIZABETHTON (8 INNINGS--RAIN)

Batting stars:  Tanner Vavra was 2-for-3 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Mitch Garver was 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.  Bryan Haar was 2-for-4 with a double.

Pitching stars:  Stephen Gonsalves struck out five in four shutout innings, giving up three hits and two walks.  Austin Malinowski pitched two shutout innings, giving up one hit and no walks with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Edison Frias pitched six innings, allowing one run on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts.  Tanner Mathis was 2-for-3 with a walk and scored twice.

Key inning:  The seventh.  In a 1-1 tie, Tanner Mendonca came in to pitch and walked all three batters he faced.  Malinowski came in, allowing a single to drive in one but otherwise putting out the fire.  In the bottom of the inning, singles by Stuart Turner and Romy Jimenez put two on and Kelvin Ortiz was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Vavra then doubled in two and Zach Granite singled in two more to put the Twins ahead 5-2.

Prospect watch:  Granite was 1-for-4 with two RBIs.  Jimenez was 1-for-3 and scored once.

Pennant race update:  Elizabethton is tied with Johnson City, and both teams trail Kingsport by 1.5 games for the last playoff spot.

DSL WHITE SOX 9, DSL TWINS 2 AT TWINS

Batting star:  Ariel Montesino was 1-for-3 with a walk and a home run (his first), scoring twice.

Pitching star:  Johan Quezada struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up no hits and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Antonio Rodriguez was 4-for-5, scoring three times and driving in two.  Carlos Mejia was 3-for-5, scoring once and driving in two.  Roger Ramos was 2-for-3 with two walks and scored once.

Key inning:  The fourth.  The White Sox trailed 1-0.  A pair of singles and a pickoff error tied the score and three walks put the White Sox ahead.  Carlos Gonzalez then hit a two-run single to make the score 4-1.

Prospect watch:  Dubal Baez was 1-for-4.

Pennant race update:  The Twins' "tragic number" is two.
